Pls before you comment know things first.....she never dances bharatnatyam..it is bharathanrityam..incorporating all dance style as in the natya shastra.....
No araimandi ..its all mish mesh style that Padmaji does..I've seen her live on stage & must admit her performance was quite captivating but I wouldnt want to do this style of hers ..This isn't pure Bharata Natya at all
@pumbavu1 this mish mesh style that you speak of is the ressurected and purest classical style of India, everything after this is neo classical. Not everyone is lucky enough to do this style properly.
Not so as anyone can tell you. I wouldn't say 'resurrected' as we can't tell just from carvings unless we have the written tresatises as well. Padma-ji studied the Karanas on the temple walls in places such as Chidambaram & made her own interpretation, although very interesting & worthy of note, though this isn't necessarily accurate or true!
We were the first dancers to mount the N Shastra as a show with her research on the 108 karanas at Birla Sabha Ghar, Kolkata as disciples of Guru Abhoy Pal who appeared with her in the tv series. I suppose Padma acca was a heroine to us all and our take on the facts is on the more romantic side. However the fact that her entire life's work in recompliling the karanas, whose designs later matched up with the ones found in Indonesia seemed too much of a fluke to be just an interpretation. Thanks
This is a thillana obviously, can anyone tell us the ragam, please? It is very lively and definitely suited to the expressiveness of padmaji's dancing. Is the fact that she does not observe the usual araimandi a feature of her bharata nithryam? Did the devadasis dance like this in the temples? If someone could answer these seriously I would be grateful.
the ragam sounds like hamsanandi. lack of araimandi is NOT a feature of bharatanrityam; a lot of senior dancers no longer sit in araimandi. also incorrect is the assertion by some that bharatanrityam is another dance form completely separate from bharatanatyam or that it is a combination of styles. it is based on the vazhuvoor style of bharanatyam, and it is what Dr. Subrahmanyam believes to be "true" bharatanatyam.
This is not bharatanatyam, as is said in the title - it is bharatanrityam, a vocabulary Padma Subramanyam came up with after studying temple carvings.
Because in the art system most dancers are not able to rate others very well nor themselves- it is called 'low self esteem,' and many do not want to give too much credit to accomplished, skilled artist because that might make them look bad. It is the same thing in the Flamenco world and anywhere were females predominate in the arts and still act out against each other in a competitive fashion rather than being positive and supportive.
I would be very interested in this set of DVDs as I shall be in India for 3 months at the end of Jan next year. Do you have any more details of who has issued it? Is it the older series where she describes what she feels was the intent of the Karanas in Tanjore & Chidambaram temples?
Its widely available as a set or to be bought seperately in Madras and in Bangalore. Good Luck for your trip to India. Enjoyed your videos very much! Thank you

i wonder how people give less than 5 stars for such great performance as this. Bharatanatyam can not get any better than this.

She is the best. There is a recent release of 7 of her DVDs under Nritya Saptaham, a collectors item.
