I have never seen Karlovic being broken in the first set like that... and Federer was really sharp in this match, he knew he had to bring his A game to defeat Karlovic's serves...
Ivo is a cool guy, don't do this guys! Respect the man, he is a pro tennis player in the top 100 after all, think about it, how many tennis r there in the world?!
With a guy like karlovic who knows he can't really hang around baseline against likes of Federer- he should really just play super aggressively on opponent serves. He gonna hold most of the time, so he should just attack first chance offerred. Same for any tall guy who can't really move. Just play some lights out aggression on opponent serve. Same for Isner.
@rahmaroma ...Which was the primary tactic of most players back in the day. Not saying it's more effective, but it used to be THE way to go, until guys like Borg and Connors came along, but even they came to the net more than players of today. Karlovic really doesn't have many other options, apart from ripping forehands, which I have seen him do on occasion.
minhinmonterey Karlovic hits a topspin backhand return at :14 and does have a complete game. He just has the most dominant serve in the game to go with it. That's why he made it to number 14 in the world.
minhinmonterey Karlovic hits a topspin backhand return at :17 and does have a complete game. He just has the most dominant serve in the game to go with it. That's why he made it to number 14 in the world.
Karlovic is the most one-dimensional player on tour. All serve, no movement, backhand, strategy. Probably one of the most difficult players to watch on tour.
@minhinmonterey Well slice is a lot easier to hit for his height going high to low....topspin requires going low to high, which at that height is not easy to do consistently. He has improved a lot though from his early career and his big moment defeating Lleyton Hewitt in 1st Round Wimbledon.
@minhinmonterey He does hit topspin backhands sometimes, they just aren't generally very effective so it makes more sense normally for him to slice it.
@minhinmonterey His family was very poor. All he would do was practice serves by himself. He wishes he had a coach to teach him a proper backhand in his youth.
@minhinmonterey yeah true i think though that he intended to make federer's shots a little higher so that when he went to volley it would be easier to win the point. still federer beat that tactic lol

From the looks of these highlights I think I could beat Karlovic. How were these point chosen? They make Karlovic look pathetic.

@nowbellhere yeah, all you have to do is stop him from hitting that 145mph serve

@TheLostGeneral NBC made an error. It was 15-40 after Fed hit the BH winner.

All Karlovic can do is hit a big serve and volley pretty well. If he has to move, he looks like a wooden doll... What a stiffy...

I feared the worst coming into this game with Karlovic's serving form.
This was a HUGE victory for tennis.

karlovic stop slicing and start retrieving better! if it wasnt for your serve, you wouldnt even be in the woman's top 500 in the wta tour!
XxMaplerzxX 11 months ago
Actually karlovic can challenge sampras in grass in 90s. But seems s&v dont work in modern game. New rackets can hit top spin passing shots easily.
Baddieko 1 year ago
@Baddieko It works sometimes but not if that's the only thing you hit to approach. You have to mix it up.

pretty good "COME ON" by federer, but Hewitt is best.
