Yes this is Melodic Death Metal and yes its a real genre. There are many sub-genres that go with it too. At the Gates, In Flames, and Dark Tranquility all pioneered the genre. There is a big difference between new and old inflames though. There old stuff is classic. Give Equilibrium a listen. They are "Pagan Symphonic Black Metal". Really good and melodic.

I bought this cd. i was a bit dissapointed to be frank. there werent really any songs that were like "wow" like "time takes us all", and just the sound production was very bad. a lot of noise, and you cant really hear much of the melody. some solos are drowned by the riffs, and the strings/synth could be a lot louder. Though i must say at 1:10 was pretty sweet, and 2:22 was great as well (good example on how good sound production should be).

They've definitely stepped up the guitar solos on this album. The solos seem to have a lot more thought put into them whereas the previous albums' solos were mostly just shred.

As for the whole album, it's pretty good but nothing amazing. Kalmah is good, but they always wear off really fast. I'm not sure if I like this or their older stuff better, though. Some of the songs are pretty good, but then some seem to be kinda filler.
