I had not noticed this problem in X3 so I tried to reproduce it and could not.
I tried 5 times even raising the PPI to 300 and still no crash.
Have you tried resetting Preferences?
Or looking somewhere else on your computer for the cause? Maybe a video driver or not having the latest Direct X.
The problem I've experienced is that it would lock up sometimes on opening with a white screen. I found my problem was the video driver. I installed the latest driver and have no more white screens.
Funny thing is, on all the PCs I worked with in the last 2 years I could reproduce this bug. In X2, X2 Ultimate and now X3 too. Completely different configurations, different operating systems (XP, Vista, Win7).
I don't think it's DX-related, PSPP doesn't use DX, as far as I know, but this is Windows 7, with the lastest ATI driver, so DX shouldn't be a problem.
Fixed in Corel PaintShop Pro X4!!! :-)

I've just lost five hours of tedious tablet work.

Yep, it's a pretty stupid bug. Lost a bit of work myself, but I tend to click save more often.
