  • If I am to take this on the ace of it, I would assume this video was improvised, hence the topic matter.

You responded positively to a comment I gave you yesterday, so before dutifully engaging in a lecture about something in which I know very little, I wish to steady myself before I misfire...

Is this video 100% improvised, or did you have an outline for your routine as per usual? On the other hand, did you have cards you were reading from? I must know beore offering critique.

  • Yup! I made it up entirely off the top of my head. After I made a point, I'd write it down on a piece of paper to help myself avoid total repetition...but that's it.

I wouldn't want to do it again, because I think that though I might get decent enough with practice...I don't want to alienate what viewers I have with three months of my staggering along towards quality improv episodes. Plus I can't really improvise all the facts and some of the graphic setups. Still, it was fun to do the once.

  • If this was an honest to God improvisation, then I appaud you. You had composure throughout, as well as confidence that your noggin would produce a few funny lines eventually, even when faltering here and there.

You are engaging and at ease even when faltering, and this is good and indicates your obvious talent. My only gripe is that your delivery is given with sparkle, yet is not especially unique.

Your delivery of the "What about that?" on th W.Churcill matter had me breathing heavily...

  • ...With laughter. Your pointed comment about young men (or lads) having sex with purported "mums" is also hilariously delivered. It also has resonance with me, as I have always failed to be intrinsically offended with these sleaze gags.

I must commend you for being articulate enough to come up with the word "stimulae" on the spot, as not everyone can be so inherently articulate as this. I assume you avoid a fair share of the mind numbing media of mainstream America to achieve this? Well done.

  • Know who else was great at improvising? The ground crew of the Apollo 13 mission. HEY GUYS, LET'S MAKE AIR FILTERS OUT OF TUBE SOCKS AND SAVE EVERYBODY MKAY?

  • Haha, goddamn - good point! Man, Astronauts...why don't we pay them like we pay music stars?

  • HAH. wordy improve is for the pluots- unnaturally natural.

...pictoral improve ...a bit easier for the raisin-brained such as myself. lovely video

consider this an improved comment. aka-shite.

  • It made me laugh, so it can't be that bad!

  • I love the use of the illustration by Ivan Bilibin- he's my favorite.

  • Daaaaamn, good eye! My friend Tom turned me onto his stuff.

  • great! :)

  • I like when you talk with your hands. You should talk with your hands more.

    An improv troupe? Explain further?

I vote loose script? An outline you can follow but deviate from if you like. For this video, you looked so much more comfortable.

  • Did I say Troupe? I should have said "club", as in my High School's Improv club that I was a member of for three years. Good times...

I do have plans to keep fiddling with how I do the show. Partly this is because I want it to always improve, but also because we've sort of gotten the current form of the show "down" and don't want to risk getting bored or in a rut!

We film the next batch on Oct 3rd and the first of that batch will be up on the 11th. Let's see what shape those take...,

  • i'm not good at improvising.

  • Practice practice practice, my friend! I'm sure if I always had improvised the show then I would have done a lot better this week :)

  • Love your stuff, as always. :D

  • VERY charitable, thank you!

  • I like your hand gestures.

    er... HIYO!

  • Haha! This episode I was using something much more like my normal body language. In general conversation I am pretty much incapable of making a point without, in some way, POINTING.

  • Lol to slow-mo dodging things! :D

  • A friend of mine said "No way was that improvised" but, really, I do have a fake, foam chunk of concrete just laying around!

  • This Was Really Good

And It Really Is Going To Come In Handy For When I Stand up In From Of My Class & Deliver My Speech Later This Week

    That Handful Of Minuets!!!

    Imp[rove FTW!!!

    You Did A Wonderful Job!!!

You Should Do It More Often so You Won't Go Brain Dead Trying To Write A Script Every Episode!!! :D

    See You Next Week

    PEace

  • I have to admit, it is tempting to improvise, say, one out of every six episodes (I film in batches of six) but I think I'd want to do a lot more practice before making it any kind of a regular thing.

That being said, I did improvise a lot of my narrating in the "Small Town's" episode....hrm.

Good luck with your speech! What always helped me was pretending I was just chilling out with my friends and telling them about something, instead of being in front of a larger audience.

  • Was this episode improvised?

You gave off this feeling of not being very coherent and you were just jumping from word to word without there being much connection.

I swear if you scripted it to be this way, you're a genius.

  • Now, see, I want to take the "genius" compliment...but alas, it was in fact improvised. A worthy experiment, but I don't think it's one I'll repeat any time soon.

  • Unscripted Handful of Minutes is brilliant :]

  • That's very kind of you!
