  • Nice classic video you got. This must`ve been a real treat to see CSX units along with the Fallen Flags that helped it come into existence. The only thing that would`ve made it better if there was a black and gold SCL unit, the old orange and white of the Western Maryland.and the blue and gold B&O and C&O units.

  • Nice to see that L&N unit in there and rare to see a BQ23-7 working the grade. I bet you wont see no GP-30 leading a CSX train up Cranberry Grade nowadays!!! Wont even see GP-40's leading except on locals.

  • @BNforever2009 Were any of the Family Lines Aegis cruisers saved from the torch for posterity?

  • AWESOME CONSIST!

  • i know others have said it but holy shit BQ!!!

  • there is alot of trains in toledo everywhere. used live right by a set of tracks. didnt know checking out trains was such a big thing untill i seen it on here. i will have start paying more atten to it. i even work by a set of rail i unload them everyday.

  • 21,500 horses right there.....amazing

  • Interesting reading the comments, how each generation of railfans laments for the trains of a time gone by. My dad always wanted steam back. For me, it was E's , F's, and the passenger trains before Amtrak. Now for many of you, it's the narrow cab diesels. Have to agree they had more character noise wise. Never really thought of them being of significance though. But I suppose if you weren't around to see them, they carry some charm.

  • It has 8 engines! So this is strange!

  • That's a shit ton of horsepower

  • What a catch on that BQ23-7! That's something I would have loved to see, but unfortunately didn't since all were scrapped....

  • @skarkot the bq23-7 cab was only the pre-cursor to all these safety cabs you see nowadays. still cool looking though. i was able to catch a few bq's in michigan in the mid to late nineties.

  • I just love this stuff! 8 Locomotives!.. Only 6 online-line though! But still better than 2 Wide Cabs if this was a a train in 2010.. In this clip all units are on run 8 except for the last 2. Gotta love that raw power sound and the BQ23.... Nice CHugger...! The newer GE don't even sound half as good as that.. They all are silent runners practically...no fun.!

  • GREAT SOUND! GREAT VID! THIS IS WHEN RAILROADING WAS STILL GOOD!! THINGS SUCK TODAY! I HATE HOW CSX DEFACED THE CHESSIE UNITS BY REMOVING THE CLASS LIGHTS ( EYES OF THE LOCO) THEY LOOK LIKE SHIT NOW! 3007 IS A B30-7 WITH SOME KIND OF CUSTOM WIDE CAB.. LOOKS DUMB BUT SOUNDS AWESOME! LISTEN TO THAT THANG CHUG!!! THATS WHEN GE UNITS STILL SOUNDED GREAT! THEY SUCK TODAY!! YOU CANT EVEN HEAR THEM CHUC CAUSE OF THE NOISE SUPRESSORS INSTALLED! UGGGH! NICE VID! TOO BAD ITS NOT STILL 1990!!! 2010 sucks !

  • @EsPeSD40T, NS did the same thing with the ex Conrail units, it wasn't just CSX doing this. 3007 is not a B30-7. It's a BQ23-7.

  • Yea I know... All the class 1's did away with the class lights.. Its a shame! They made the front of the loco.. they look dumb without their " eyes"! Anyway, I have been railfanning and working with railroads since the 1980's.. I have seen the peak of the action.. its been down hill for years on railroads...unfortunetely.. if you get your kicks with 2 Wide cabs over 4 or 5 GP/SD40's than theres somthing not quite right.. 2nd generation power rocked the rails in the hayday of railroading!!!! =)

  • @EsPeSD40T, kind of the same here too....I grew up along the Chessie System and saw them at their very best when GP30's, GP40's, GP40-2's, B30-7's, etc ruled the rails. I don't like the looks of the widecab units. NS was the last holdout to go widecab and I had hoped they wouldn't buy them but they did.

  • @meccaturbo , you're right about that. I spent some time along NS lines in Atlanta and Ohio and saw them in their prime with solid high-hood 4 axle lashups.. up till about 2005... now they are all gone.. all you will see on NS trains now are Dash 9's, 60M's or SD70M's....Oh well.. all we can do is deal with it..

  • What model was 3007?

I don't think I've seen that one before.

  • @BerilacBulge, it's a BQ23-7. Family Lines (Seaboard System) had 10 of them - they've all been retired by CSX.

  • everything was online

  • early to mid 90's

  • were the last two engines running?

  • what year was this taken.

  • BQ23-7, ordered by and delivered to the Seaboard Coast Line RR in 1978 in Family Lines livery. By the time CSX came along, they were mostly never used as leaders due to safety concern and by the 90's most had their windows plated over. They were retired by 1999 with the rest of the B23-7's, all cut up.

  • All the railroads that formed CSX are all in this consist!!!!

  • Nope, not all of them.

I don't see anything that's Conrail, Penn Central, New York Central, New Haven, Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, Western Maryland, Clinchfield, or Atlantic Coast Line in this consist.

  • @KingofTomedy, there's plenty of B&O and C&O in this consist....those Chessie units were formerly B&O and C&O before CSX idiotically painted out the roadnames under the cab windows.

  • a BQ23-7?those things are probably gone a really long time, they remind me of those E60 series electrics .and the family lines scheme looks really good on it

  • Awesome lash-up and catch, wow!

  • those engines are wide open...

  • GE BQ23-7

  • What model is the "Family Lines" locomotive?

I miss the Chessie Kitty graphics.

  • That's a BQ23-7. Family lines was the railroad to order them. GE made them and was their first wide / safety / comfort cab locomotive.

  • Are they still be used or did they meet the hot blue wrench?

Its a interesting concept but the lack of a nose doesn't offer much crash protection. They also look like a Genesis locomotive minus the aerodynamic nose.

  • They were ordered by SCL to be used on local freight service. The cab is large enough to hold five crew members.

  • awesome!

    perfect lashup and power!

  • Great line up, makes me want to model them and I am a Conrail fan!

  • I remember about 10-15 years ago Bachmann made a HO Scale model of a BQ23-7.

  • Lucky Bastard!!!

  • nice engines!

  • I never implied anything else that it was my opinion. As you have the right to comment, so do I. I just felt that a public forum like this was not the place for using expletives. I don't mind at all that you enjoy all the locomotive makes, never said anyone shouldn't...... I am sorry you take exception with my satirical comment.

  • you were making a good point until your last sentence. You just showed your real intelligence there!

  • What a great spot to catch trains!! I'm jealous! Classic units/paint all around. Not only were those BQ's ugly, they sounded crappy too! Pre-CSX Seaboard/L&N paint on that beast makes it a triple treat!!! lol Great video and great sound work. Thanks for posting.

  • They didn't sound crappy, just different. The EMDs in this video all have 16 cylinder two-stroke engines, while the BQ23-7 has a 12-cyl 4-stroke engine.

  • Thank you, I am well aware of the differences of the engine types. It is my opinion that the GE's sounded choked off or gurgling. I know that is the "sound" of the FDL engine. but it doesn't change my mind. You feel they don't sound crappy, and that's fine with me. enjoy!

  • @BudmanPackfan, seems that you're one of the most opinionated people on here...with your "ugly" and "sound crappy" comments. A lot of people take a more refined view of railroading than you do, thankfully...

  • @meccaturbo OMG you haven't read many comments on youtube then!

  • Awesome, love it!

  • Yup

  • What a great sound these loco's have!

  • I have been to Toledo many times and never leave dissapointed.

  • Monsterous Sound!!

  • armyof11, I have been to Toledo but with no video camera. I whish I had it when I went there.

  • Very, very nice. I note that the first revenue car (also the third and fourth) is a Soo Line covered hopper ;-)

  • Just awesome. I miss the Seaboard and Chessie engines, a lot...

  • ive seen that same bq23-7 in my hometown of south lyon, michigan that thing gets around! chessie gp30 still my fav tho.

  • The U-boat is a BQ23-7 The cab was extended and made to look like that for crew comfort I think.

  • WOW,thats a amazing consist, Chessie,Seaboard, Family Lines and at least 2 CSX paint schemes and it seems every bit was needed! i wish i had been around to see the early CSX years but thanks for sharing this with us.

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • Thats the best reply yet out of all my videos

  • Not tomay people says anything on that L&N engine on the rear. look at it again and check out the long hood.

  • Thank you. I heard those engine for about 45 minutes before it came around the corner.

  • check out that oddball U-boat!!!!!

  • So where/when is this?

  • Mance, PA on the CSX Sand Patch Line

  • That is sweet.

  • is the 3rd to the last from family lines?

  • Amazing video.

  • Darn good catch! Keep 'em coming!

  • Classic Chessie shot you have there, very cool. I wish more units were still around and I wish CSX would paint some of their older EMD's or GE's is Chessie Heritage paint..!!

  • Wow! A Chessie GP30!! Nice catch!

  • Amazing, I miss those units. What is that GT unit? I have never seen one in person but is that an ALCO or Dash-7?

  • I see mostly geeps and 2 alcos

  • It's a GE BQ23-7 CSX was the only one that had them I think.

  • Oh jeeze, dumb mistake, lol i literally wrote alco, i meant U boat

  • To not missinterpret, I have seen ALCOs and Dash-7's in person I was refering to the BQ23-7, I forgot about those you don't see them in film much.

  • Awesome video man, keep em coming!
