there is no question that Vinnie is world's most technically advanced and studio proficient drummer. What is missing is taste and musicality. Especially in this solo. When Vinnie is in a situation with no direction from a leader, what you usually have is this type of playing. Lot's of notes, random orchestrating of drum rudiments, no dynamics, and no space. This band with Brian Blade is very different. More musical and creative in my opinion.
Funny comments. This is what it is - flipping brilliant... BEYOND brilliant! If people feel there needs to be a different combo of musicians onstage, let them become agents or managers for all of the above incredible players. Then, you not only have an opinion - you get PAID for it! Who knew?! Again - this is what it is. Phone up these guys and make suggestions as to who they should be playing with. I am sure they will value your input. Peace.
you guys are pricks instead of enjoying that great band and the mighty drumming of vinnie colaiuta with all those legendary musicians you are talking about copeland and blade those are drummers from another era and style it's like comparing gene krupa with dave lombardo they don't have the same musical background and they are from different drum eras it's whole another story and last but not least i bet you can't play a note and you spend all there chatting and talkin shit
This kind of thing used to impress me an age ago, but I've kind of grown out of it now. Much prefer him as 'song' player - though a guy with his phenomenal gift does need an outlet to blow.
Another example being, his ability to play with the utmost simplicity. Truly a musican who can play at both extremes, but not often celebrated for his understated work.
I am so glad I got to see the Five Peace Band with Brian Blade. It was my first time to see him perform. It was beautiful. So fluid and expressive. I love Vinnie, especially with Jeff Beck. But Brian is my new favorite jazz drummer.

Vinnie is slamming, yeah, but that's about it, there are videos on here of him in the 80's doing innovative and inventive drum work which I personally find more interesting musically but he seems to have abandoned all of that for this heart and soul thing, is that what happens when you start "drumming for christ"? ; )
hilarious if you only watch the legs trying to find the pulse by foot tapping. trying to figure it out. there it is..no there it is...no wait...ok no more tapping...ok... now? now?.. NOW? lets put vinnie in a big band and see how many feet tap opposite... (not that this a bad comment against any of these giants, but its funny to watch the best guys stress even when the most responsible drummer takes a solo)
man vinnies a motherfucker. if you didnt know who he was and heard this then heard him on the joni mitchell letters youd think theyre two totally different drummers
@SwissArmyTriplet yeah but terry chooses to be in a class by himself with his fucking humungous drum set. He is good in terms of improvised polyrhythms. But in my opinion, Vinnie Colaiuta is the best drummer in the world. He is the only drummer who has mastered metric modulation.
@beatcrazy14 I would say that ari hoenig has about an equal mastery, mayyyyyybe mark guiliana as well, but not really to the same extent as vinnie and ari. and i agree regarding bozzio. he's a great player, just a different voice - and far less techinque.
@beatcrazy14 Incorrect dude. You think Weckl or Virgil or Marco M. haven't mastered metric modulation, polyrhythms, beat displacements, artifical rhythms and time inside time? There are plenty who have and express in different ways. Vinnie is phenomenal no doubt, but not the only one.
@beatcrazy14 Terry Bozzio isnt in the same league as Virgil and Vinnie. He is in a different league yes, with his use of polyrhythms and phrasing on his toms tuned in a Diatonic scale etc. But for pure technique and polyrhthmic phrasing Vinnie is the mad scientist, and Virgil has taken it another step again.
Immenso Vinnie!tecnica,velocita',potenza,musicalita'..forse il piu' grande batterista vivente.C'ero anch'io a questo concerto e non lo dimentichero' di certo!grazie per il vid.

Love that single stroke roll he does at 0.46 between his right hand and right foot.
Dudes been making my jaw drop since I saw him at the Flying Jib (encino) in 1982.
