This was the first song I ever heard of Mick's. Instantly drawn in by the sheerly fantastic interpretation of Soil Festivities. Over the years I come back and listen again. I am still in awe Mick. I know I said Arp Motion was your best live video. I say tie. This one is so technically beautiful and flowing it makes me envious.
Where can we get a hold of this track? it's as if the tunes jack straight into your nervous system and trigger visions of epic as well as emotions that transcend the norm.
An alien has fallen on earth... God wath a realistic version of the opening theme of soil festivities... Probably my favourite album from the Greek God... Amazing!
Its such a pleasure to listen to your music...there are probably not many people who enjoy this type of music..it just feels great to come across a like-minded person..please keep your videos coming
You are one of the top synth artists on YouTube, I hope you recognize that and I hope you are enjoying playing as much as we enjoy listening to you! You, and a small handful of others continue to inspire me, and have me parking my bass guitar and populating my den with keyboards and VST's.... Love this music!!!
I am amazed at your cover, but I'm even more in awe of your humility. You apologize for "bum notes"..., this is the best cover of the best track of the best lp of the best electronic music master. Thanks for posting...dsm
great soundscape... I have aquastion - some of the sounds seems as if they had a bit of pitch envelope modulation... correct or is the fx done some other way?
I'll never know how you got such a faithful CS80 sound out of the ESQ1. That must have taken a lot of work! Amazing! I hope you've got a recording contract. This is awesome!
Man,I have to say this is my favorite album by Vangelis and I have to say you have made a brilliant version of it.
Because it is my favorite album,if you had made a sonic mess I would have probably not left a comment as I'm sure others would, but this is truly beautiful work.
I don't know if you use software synths but check my site out for a version of the ARP Quadra I am releasing for the MAC and PC,I have spent a year creating it and adding extra features,it should be ready in two weeks.
this great men must have over 10,000 dollars worth of piano siynth but he master them all .....wis=h he was my neighbor to be good musical friends with.. sir you rock
Somebody loves "Soil Festivities". Very good rendition of the Vangelis sound and feel. "Soil Festvities" is one of my favourite albums from the greek master of emotional synth sounds.
@RRKS69 Yep. But look what Mick does with his ESQ1. WOW. Humbles me every time I see him use the thing. If you really want to see him kicking butt live check out Arpeggio Motion. Best live playing yet. Even though this one rights for that top spot in my book.
Stunning sounds and it proves its the person behine the gear that matters not the gear itself. Most ppl go on and on about having this analogue or this synth or this synth is no good when in fact most synths are just brilliant in the right hands.
This is a VERY polished bit of work man and I am bang into my music and synths big time.Bravo
Excellent indeed! And in my opinion, that particular Vangelis cymbal/piatti crash sounds very good, comparing with the original(s). So, it seems that the JUNO G has (almost) that same cymbal crash sound/patch as Vangelis uses in his orchestral songs.
Very impressive work. Just goes to show that having the latest synth or software does not make a difference unless you can play. Most instruments produced in the past 10-12 years are highly capable in the right hands. You have the right stuff. Mad programming skills here. Knowing your instrument is much more effective than having the latest gizmo...this proves that point. Just excellent work!
He lists his equipment as an Ensoniq ESQ 1, Korg Microkorg, Roland Juno 106, Roland Juno G, and a Korg X5. You can see this information if you click on the (more info) link in the subscribe box at the top right.
Wwoooww..Bloody impresive. You nailed the Vanfelis sound to a pinch, including sometimes odd vibrato. What settings do You use for the effects? how many secs, how much pre-reverb?. I always end up muddling the reverb and delays, adding too much unwanted noise trying to get that "wide Vangelis" reverb/delay...
It's so good... Soil Festivities is my favourite Vangelis album, and your performance here is a real treat. *Loving* those rich, rich strings on the microkorg... A real pleasure to listen to sir!
Hi pal. I have two opinions of this song. At first, by considering this as a cover... it's failure because you lost all of the warmness and the emotions of the original... Vangelis used his ability to have very human touch to his keyboards and that is not related whether the keyboards are analog or digital, it's HOW YOU use them. But otherwise when thinking this version as it's own, it's simply brilliant... very nice sounds... I was stunned by your string sound but I managed to make even better!
I like it---but there is lots of digital sounding stuff there...obviously analogue is really hard to get--but that would be the only thing---just the digitalness of it
One would think that it was Vangelis himself playing when I listened your interpretation. I have been involved in music for almost 3 decades but I have not seen many people with such a programming skills and originalality. Very good job mate. I would be keen to know what sort of synths/workstations/samplers you use to produce such melodic lines. All the best and continue this way. Regards R.
Hi and thanks for the flattering comments:) As for the equipment I use, it's quite basic , ensoniq esq1 with 8 track sequencer, couple of junos ,an old korg x5 and a Microkorg, akai s2000 sampler (mainly used for drums and filter sweeps). All run through a cheap behringer mixer and compressor. Thanks to the worldwide recession ,my dreams of buying more hardware equipment and analogue synths are no more. Im going down the soft synth route soon! Thanks again,
Don't go the soft synth route if you can help it!
If you're going to spend money, why not just get a better mixer, compressor, and effects processor?
I'm just afraid you will (like a lot of people) end up losing the inspirational factor that comes from tweaking hardware, and end up not even sounding better in the trade. I.E. No software will sound like an analogue filter...
Cheap analogue additions: MFB-503 (drums), Spectral Audio Neptune (mono module with VCOs and cascade filter).
Thanks, I take your point, and as luck would have it i came across an akai s3000xl sampler today with a whole bunch of really amazing drum/guitar/synth samples, I was astonished at the sound from it and i got it Reeeall cheap. !!! (dance) . a new toy will bring new ideas...
There's one thing in this cover : the spirit and the sound design of the greek master.... very nice cover...it's very rare while someone make a GOOD cover of vangelis... you WIN..... I'm working on SPIRAL cover (except track 2).. SEE YOU SOON very imprsseive work..really :-)
OUTSTANDING!!! Best cover of an always under rated album. So many reviews say that Soil Festivities was too commercial. BS. It is my favorite album from Vangelis. Please keep pumping out the music.
I only have two keyboards to work with and I only use one. I am a vangelis wannabe and dont practice. You are simply amazing. dont stop what you are doing.
erm..which one? :) the 106 makes the twinkling effect by adding a long delay, the juno G are presets and the juno6 is just doing what it does best through it's arpeggiator!
The thick sweater looks very comfy and the composition helps warm the heart and soul. Especially the warming strings on the MicroKorg. Another deep track. Keep 'em coming...
awesome work!! what reverb machine do u use?? and the vp330 patch for the microkorg..would u make it available??? Nice work u really nailed the Vangeils type sound scape.
Great man, Soil is one of my favorite Vangelis albums. You really nailed down some of the original sounds & sequences. Sounds like that Juno G has some impressive Orchestral percussion..?
I believe creative bought them out some time ago. So there are some new Ensoniq boards out there, but they're not really anything like the old Ensoniqs, which is a pity. The Fizmo was about the last the the original Ensoniq did.
Ensoniq was bought out by E-MU in the late eighty's. The factory was in my neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. E-MU used their technology and closed Ensoniq. They were best known for their low priced samplers (Mirage).
Lovely, lovely, lovely. Soil Festivities was an album that took some time to get into for me. I actually think your "cover" would fit perfectly on the album. It's a lost track recovered!
Hi Tom, the juno G is superb in certain areas, such as pianos, drums and most acoustic instruments. They sound so realistic. On the synth patches, there are tons of modern dance patches on it and they are top quality. I'm not convinced by some of the juno 60/106 samples but thats because I am comparing them side by side.
At over 1K I guess it is quite expensive, but a very powerful tool at that.
Wow, amazing stuff. Yes, sounds a lot like a vintage Vangelis jam! I can't get the CS-80 out of my head either, am thinking of building a custom analog synth with CS-80 filters. Just something monophonic. MOTM make some CS80/GX1 replica circuits, either kit form or pre assembled. And not all that expensive considering the amount of soldering needed for a typical CS circuit. Congrats on Ireland football win too!
This is VERY good! I was listening to the music while browsing the web and totally forgot it was not Vangelis playing. You definitely deserve a CS-80. :) Good job!
Very good job ! You deserves to have a CS-80 :) On these days a friend of mine will upload a video made in my studio. It is a demo of an self-made analog chorus that emulates the Solina (an other String Ensembles) and the synth used to perform the demo is my CS-80. Just make a search with the "élkorus" word (there are 2 videos until now).
I imagine how it must be to play this...i think ive i played this vid damn epic

The thick sweater looks very comfy and the composition helps warm the heart and soul. Especially the warming strings on the MicroKorg. Another deep track. Keep 'em coming...

Wow, amazing work Mik! Why hasn't Vangelis given you a CS-80 yet? :p
How did you make those VP330 strings on the Microkorg? Sounds amazing!

Great man, Soil is one of my favorite Vangelis albums. You really nailed down some of the original sounds & sequences. Sounds like that Juno G has some impressive Orchestral percussion..?

absolutely crazy man!!!! the flute lead and the horn type synth leads are gnarley!! both coming from the ESQ??
curtiswebster007 3 years ago
Cheers, the flute is from the Juno G and the horn/brass sounds from the ESQ which is also a midi controller

Feck!!
This sounds as if Vangelis had done Soil Festivities around the "Spiral" period.
I'm gobsmacked that a) anyone would cover this b) do it so bloody well

Thanks:) , yep I think Ensoniq should give me a job lol!..Does anyone know if they are still making synths?
mik300z 3 years ago
I believe creative bought them out some time ago. So there are some new Ensoniq boards out there, but they're not really anything like the old Ensoniqs, which is a pity. The Fizmo was about the last the the original Ensoniq did.
Andronicus2007 3 years ago
Ensoniq was bought out by E-MU in the late eighty's. The factory was in my neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. E-MU used their technology and closed Ensoniq. They were best known for their low priced samplers (Mirage).

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Soil Festivities was an album that took some time to get into for me. I actually think your "cover" would fit perfectly on the album. It's a lost track recovered!

Hi "mik300z"
Would you recommend the Roland Juno G as a good value keyboard? And does it have many of the original roland 'synths' on it?
Thanks, Tom
miniroll32 3 years ago

Andronicus2007 3 years ago
cheers Andy, it was rugby though and not football...! I guess we'll meet you guys in the autumn:) On the Cs80, that sounds inrteresting..
mik300z 3 years ago
This is VERY good! I was listening to the music while browsing the web and totally forgot it was not Vangelis playing. You definitely deserve a CS-80. :) Good job!

thankyou:) someday I might own the real thing , need some luck and a lot of cash first!
