Another thing to add: don't pick a name that has a ton of possible spellings or is a nickname. My name is Abby. On my birth certificate, it says Abby. Not Abigail, not Abbey, not Abbie, not Abbi (who even spells it that way?). Please, save your child the trouble of having to specify which spelling you're using.
My brother and sister in law named my niece "Abbygail" instead of "Abigail" because it would be "easier to use as a nickname." I don't know how many people have used this spelling, but it just seems really pointless and it makes me angry when I read it.
You know that memory trick where you associate and interesting thing with a bunch of boring crap so that when you recall the interesting thing in say a test or an essay all the boring but important crap comes with it........ Well that was the technique I used to pass the last modern history exam of year twelve...And the key detail that tied all the crap together?.... Was the name Andrew Peacock and his getting stuck in a riot in 1975...Who Hank just referenced....My life is complete ^ _ ^
i was named ariana as apposed to the more common spelling arianna so even though my mother didnt want me to have a name with more letters that it really needed i have to spell it to everyone b/c if i dont they will add that extra n
My mum named her kids Jessica, Lillian, Jack and Mason. In the years that she named us our names weren't in the most popular list. But the year after they were... Clearly my mother is the one who decides what names go on the list :P
I like the rule about avoiding the most popular names. I was named Brittany Nicole and in my graduating class there were two other Brittany Nicoles. Also, there was a girl born on the same day I was, a year earlier, with the name Brittany Nicole. :P In middle school and high school I basically stopped responding to my name when it was yelled cause I was never sure if it was me or one of the 10 girls named Brittany roaming the halls.

My name is William and I call myself William, I'm the only William in my year guorp and probulby in my whole school who wants to be called William, not Will, not Bill, Willy etc...
Disagree. I have a stupid short form of my name that everyone calls me and it's super awesome to have a proper name when dealing with profs/employers...
@TheHarlequinLady Castiel, Willow, and Ezekiel are great names (not all of the 'different' names are stupid - I would love to have a daughter named Ember or a son named Rowan,) but I hope you meant AlexandRA Marie, rather than AlexandER. You can't get away with giving a boy a girl's name. He'll never hear the end of it.
Hmm...alrighty heres a list of names that i have chosen for my future children...lets see what youtube thinks of them :Gabriel Zane, Willow Shii, Castiel May, Alexander Marie, Ezekiel Jean, and Adrian Hunter
my name's Joy-Collen, artistic and free willing as my parents put it, but I live in Ireland and the Irish for girl is cailin, which is said like Collen, so my name is basically ''happy girl'' -___- you fail mam and dad
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I work at a children's facility, and the amount of kids who come in daily with these ridiculous, "artistic", hard-to-spell-and-pronouce names is astronomical. And then their parents are all offended when I don't know how to spell Izzuhbelluh or Ahmeelieya or AArejlfdshljfdsfjkdshjkfdsnhjfds. I actually started keeping a list of all the ridiculous names, then I go home and show them to my family, whilst simultaneously being insanely thankful that I have a normal name.
My name is pretty common but the problem is my enitials. They just happen to be A.B.J, being a 13 year old this has caused an incredibly annoying nickname that will stick with me until I leave school.
That is SO TRUE. I go by my Middle name, and at doctor's offices they call "Catherine.... Catherine.... Catherine? Hello?" yeah. And I help out a choir for 7 and 8 year olds, and some of their names are CRAZY like Stormagadeeon Dark Ruler of all... Just kidding. but their names are wacked.
My name is Yasmin and people often call me Jasmine because they have not come across my version before, even though its a perfectly legit name. To bad it is now associated with the contraceptive pill.
As a midwife you come across some interesting names, as I am new to my training the first unusual one i have come across is. Jonafan instead of Jonathon, all the other midwives were saying the same point you were, Hank.
The most common name i have seen is Mia, pretty but now I associate it with chavs.
Try growing up as "H" Potter... and having your mother point it out whenever possible -_-'
I have some name ideas picked out already, plenty even, but most either have some relation to fiction/mythology, are really fancy/victorian or come from Japan. Gods help my future kids XD
I read about a woman naming her daughter Le-a. And how do you say that? You'd think it sounds kind of like Leia, but no. The dash ISN'T silent. So people have to call her Ledasha. What the hell?
@crayolaupyournose haha, I get called Nikki by my family but all my friends refuse to call me anything other than Nichole, they say it sounds weird. There's also this guy at work that calls me Nikolai, which I have told him numerous times that this is a male Russian name, but he won't stop O.O
My name is Kathryn. Consequently it has led to many frustrations in how to spell it (even when my dad was trying to sign my birth certificate) and put me in a somewhat sad position when I feel significantly unimportant when put up against Katherine Middleton. Oh the shame.
I got named after a Shakespeare play character, and not one that appeared in Romeo and Juliet or Macbeth, or Midsummer, or... well whatever it was a character who appeared in As You Like It which I think is slightly lesser known than the aforementioned ones. Certainly I've never had to study it. ANYWAY what I mean is that Shakespeare names are a nice choice! The most ridicule I got was people over-enunciating the "D" at the end of it. "Ros-a-lin-DUH?" ._. No, stupid 12-year-old classmate. No.
My name is Nichole. Not unheard of I know, but I've been called nick-hole and nickel my entire life as soon as people find out the way I spell my name. I think Nicole looks totally wrong and I wouldn't change the spelling of my name, but still....
@TransgressiveInkgirl Hi, my name's Nicole xD Have to say, I'm glad I avoided that nick-hole business... Actually, I've never really been called nickel, either.
My friends are more food orientated. Nik-Naks. Nicoca-cola. That second one would probably be better if my name was Nicola...
I really hate it when people call me Nicola.
But most of the time, people call me Nikki, so now, even to me, Nicole looks kind of wrong...
@Lilydrop Oh and that's without mentioning that I live in Quebec, Canada, which is French, and a lot of people can't even pronounce it properly. Including my grandparents...
when I grow up, I wan`t to have 1 boy named Emile (i got it from Chuggaaconroy) and 1 girl named Evelo, i made that one up, is it to weird? ...don`t look at my user name...
There is only one girl's name that is absolutely off limits to every parent in the world, regardless of how it sounds coupled with their surname.......Fanny. DON'T DO IT!!!
My parents were really lucky that kids never realised that my brother and I are called Sam and Ellie, sometimes 'Ella' therefore Sam and Ella after the food poisoning. My mum said she realised this before naming me, evil.
@LJSuperwoman The Mason-Dixon Line was a line that most people used to divide the north and the south during slavery and the Civil War, though the line was originally created over a border dipute in revolutionary times.
Even if you do speak the native language of your country of residence if you're a foreigner you should ask the locals for help. Here in Canada I know a couple of friends named Ashley because apparently in the UK that's a common boys name...here it's not. Oh how they suffered in school.
I would be a mean parent and would name my kid after a video game character, like Cloud, Tifa, or Aerith, but I have also decided to not have kids in the near future, so it doesn't matter.
Firstly, the 'parents' naming their kids this are still kids themselves so in my mind they are not classed as sensible, mature or thinking adult parents. Secondly, I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. I have 10 names at home >.>
@shikamaruisfit His middle name is Henry, and one of the alternative names to Henry is Hank (Some people use their middle names instead of their first names.)
my school has a lot of nathans. theres only one i call nate or nathan and the rest i refer to by their last names, until today when i anagrammed one of their names. "anal rash dent". good thing he's my friend and i can get away with calling him "anal rash"
lol my future children are legitimately screwed... since their an'da is obsessed with strange names full of apostrophes. that being said, you didn't really say anything about hyphens and apostrophes, did you? too bad, sen'jin would be an awesome name... or maybe not.
My first name is Crystal… My second name is Jade. My last name is Douma, but people change it to Diamond. So, hello everyone! My name is Crystal Jade Diamond!
Like when parents choose the French spelling of Ashley (it's asshole with accents). One of the gym teachers at my school named his son Atlas Danger Planakis. That kid will either get made fun of or be very popular, or do really stupid shit all his life.
My name is Daren, people spell it Darren 90% of the time because Darren is the "Normal" version, however people don't realist not only the pronunciation difference (Darren is more of a Dar-Ren and Daren is more Dare-en) but the cultural difference. One is Gaelic, the other was adopted by White men but carried to South Africa where the spelling was changed to change the what it was enunciated in order to suite not only the former inhabitants before fencing them all out but also to fit the accents
@7ShadesOfBlue I have a very similar problem with my name, Alissa. It is always spelled with a 'y' even though that makes no sense to me what so ever, why I'm 'Alissa'. 'Alyssa' is a form of the name' Alyson' and is Greek while 'Alissa' is Hebrew. Each name has a different meaning. I have not yet met one 'Alissa' in my life, but I have met very many 'Alyssa's
Ha your name misspellings remind me of the Irish spellings of names. But I think they are more acceptable since they come from a language. Odhran(pronounced oar-on), Aoife (eef- a), Aine (Anya), Siobhan (Sh'vonne).
My name is Morgan (female.) I've never met another Morgan, but when people shout for their kid and they're called Morgan very often it's a boy. If I have a son I'd quite like to call him Tyler Matthew or Tyler Marcus, because I actually have a strange reason rather than just liking the name.
@morgyvids Tyler Durden. Oh, yeah :D . But, seriously, although Morgan has been gaining in popularity as a boy's name lately, most of the Morgans I know of are girls.
I'm surprised Edward didn't make top

My parents didn't watch this.
1. My parents call me one name and my FULL name is another
2. Both the nickname and full name are oddly spelled.
So not only can teachers not pronounce my name I don't even RESPOND to it when they get it right, so I look completely stupid.
I love my name, it's original, but seriously. You could have just named me what you wanted to call me.
Also, you forgot something in Rule 7. Don't name them after a month, especially if it's not the month they were born in.

lol my future children are legitimately screwed... since their an'da is obsessed with strange names full of apostrophes. that being said, you didn't really say anything about hyphens and apostrophes, did you? too bad, sen'jin would be an awesome name... or maybe not.

Sadly, no one will name their child after a character with substance like Hermione, Luna, Albus or Severus. Besides Harry Potter of course.
