there is a lot more to it. but you can change the pitch of a talking drum by squeesing the ropes on the outside of it. that is how he got the tabbala-ish pitch variations.
You can't get these 2 but you can get John Lurie with Billy Martin and Calvin Weston doing similar stuff - "Men With Sticks". Came out in 93 or there abouts.
A música de Naná Vasconcelos, asim como sua performance, remetem-nos às ancestralidades cósmicas, ás raízes afrobrasileiras, aos sons da floresta amazônica e toda uma devoradora babel de sons magistrais.

3 people don't understand music that makes you feel something without words.

I saddens me when I realise I will never be as cool as John Lurie

Fans of this video track down the John Lurie album "Men With Sticks" if you can, it is out of print. No Vasconcelos but similar percussion style.
Also, someone says "Joe" at 2:14, haha

@SensoryOssuary
Look closely, it's Lurie saying "Joe" at 2:14, haha :P

That guy doing the intro is a prime candidate for Men Who Look Like Old Lesbians.

That's David Sanborn, alto sax extraordinaire. Yes, he does look like an old lesbian.

This is the last couple of minutes of "A Paper Bag & The Sun" - minus the "Joe" - on the great Lounge Lizards album "The Voice Of Chunk."

great stuff....whatever happened to John Lurie?, did he give up music for his art?
watski 3 years ago
He has a very serious unknown illness. As far as I know it's forced him to stay in his house for at least the last 5 or 6 years.
It's really sad. Art is his only creative output now i think.
mcclano 3 years ago
thanks, that is very sad, let's hope he makes a recovery
