Sony bought Psygnosis back in 1993. Midway did the N64 version in 1998. Because it didn't interfere with console sales, Sony/Psygnosis gave the go ahead for N64 and Saturn versions, thus raking in a bit more money. I'd say the N64 version is the 3rd best in the series (Wipeout and Wipeout 2097 being 1st and 2nd best). There's some class tracks, and the controller works well with it.
There are many cartridge games that had loading. Even SNES games. Out of This World had loading times, and Batman Returns had loading times (it used advanced for the time prerendered graphics, and the loading sucked. 20+ second loading for each screen, and you changed screens every few moments.)
If you see the screen blank for more than a second before a game or stage starts, it's loading. Even Goldeneye did this. It just might not have a loading indicator.
i remember playing this on Nintendo back in the day...........then a few years ago the ones for psp pure and pulse.........and now i has ps3 with wipeout hd and fury.
You know, it does seem like a ripoff for the most part, but I tend to look at it like a WipEout that up to four players can play. The game seems to be just as fast as WipEout XL for the PlayStation 1. It's still a fun game that I've only rented, but never owned. I once got to the Velocitar track once. But since it's been so long, I can't recall what that experience is like.
I was actually suprised this version made it out. I remember Wipeout 64 was rushed out the door in the end due to Sony buying into Pygnosis. Just to think if they spent even a few weeks more developing and tweaking, this version would never have seen the light of day!
I'm not wrong. But you are correct to a point. Sony bought shares in Psygnosis in 1994 but they never owned a high enough percentage of to control their output until just after Wipeout 64's release. It was in this time (1998?) Sony purchased the majority of shares and finally Psygnosis where true 2nd party. Sony also own shares in Square Enix, but that doesn't make them a 2nd party. It basically guarantees they will have titles released on their system.
Sony owned quite a big part of psygnosis right from the start of the playstation era. part of the deal with the team was they would not relinquish their status of a multiplatform developer. that is also the reason why games like destruction derby on Saturn and Wipeout 64 were released a long time after the initial Sony PS version. During the PS2 era Sony owned about 40% of Square and sadly that enough to completely dictate the teams output for home consoles.
Other than the F-Zero series, the Wipeout series is the best futuristic racing game series in history. This version was incredible and as fun as the PlayStation ones. Best thing is that you can have split-screen racing without having to have some link deal for the PlayStation console. It played every bit like the PS1 Wipeouts while delivering all that made these games fun- fast action, great music, and unforgettable gameplay. GREAT video post and great memories. Music good even today.
@JohnMarineTube The one thing that always rubbed me the wrong way about F-Zero was its sense of detatchment from what would drive motor racing of this kind.
There's no background, no lore and importantly, the ship designs make absolutely no sense. It still feels like a child's game, which is how Nintendo likes it and why I can't take them seriously.
i forgot i downd a bunch of n64 roms. i installed the wipeout 2097 for the pc,it ran but was really fast so i remember i had wipeout64 and em playn it now.until i get another psp wipeout 64 will do

What's interesting it that wipeout was popular enough to port over to competing systems (it was ported to both the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo N64), which is very unusual for a 2nd party developer

This game was just a rip of 2097. Though it was a worthy entry in the series.

WIPEOUT 2097 was PS only and WIPEOUT 64 was NINTENDO only. I loved both.

Actually you're wrong. Wipeout 2097 was also on the Sega Saturn and Windows PC.

you are completely wrong on that one. at release of wipeout 64 developer Psygnosis was already owned by Sony for roughly 5 years.
