Too bad some assholes decided to steal more than his guitar picks, In Rome recently all of their music gear was stolen out of their van. Including the bass players beloved Warwick which he played for 22 year, I hope they get their stuff back somehow or at least those stealing shits get their due justice. Guthrie Govan is an amazing player.
@jepesuzette I don't need to test because I'm right. What makes an electric guitar (any model) sound the way it does is: 90% player and 10% PICKUPS. Pickups are magnetic and only care about what the strings are doing from the nut to the bridge. They don't care what the wood is or even if it's hollow or semi-hollow. Guthrie's guitar could be made of maple syrup and still sound the same.
@TheGargoyleLives You are an idiot. So lets just say a les paul (Mahogany) had the same single coil pick ups in it as a strat (Alder) their going to sound exactly the same? Please go try this right away and let me know how your experiment went, then never comment on something you obviously have no clue about....
@tomroffey666 I don't need to test because I'm right.
@TheGargoyleLives So answer me this. Why then do all guitar manufactures, luthiers etc make guitars out of all different types of woods? You would think they would just make them all out of plywood to save money. Please do me a favour and email John Suhr, Warmoth and any other guitar manufactures and ask them why don't you build guitars out of plywood instead of using expensive tone woods. Get back to me on what they had to say. I'm sure they will shed some light on the subject!
@tomroffey666 They do it to steal your money. On an acoustic guitar, woods do make a difference but once pickups are incorporated all woods are 'created equal'. For some reason either the manufacturers don't realize that or they DO realize that but customers just believe what their dead heroes say and spend more money on different woods when it really doesn't matter.
@TheGargoyleLives . just because YOU can't hear the diference doesnt mean there is no difference. It's you ears. To me I can hear the difference between a strat made of alder and one made of swamp ash. A plywood les paul will sound lots different than a carved maple on mahogany les paul. I dont even plug electrics in when I am gonna buy one. I wanna hear the natural sustain of the wood. Trust me you go get a plywood guitar and I promise my mahagonay guitar is gonna sound better
@chad7206 Ok let me try this again: acoustically, yes certain woods do sound different. Acoustically, everything you've ever heard about woods/finishes is true. Once you incorporate different pickups on an electric guitar, that's the sound. The pickups, the strings, and most importantly your hands. Woods and air are not magnetic, so they are not involved in the electric equation. Pickups only care about what the strings are doing.
@TheGargoyleLives ..That's why if I am interested in buying a guitar I don't plug it in at the store. I want to know that it has a good acoustic tone. If i take it home, plug it in and it sounds like crap, then I just replace the pick ups.. I do know a guy who use to make plywood guitars just as a hobby. Nothing wrong with it if that's what one enjoys. But I just don't think it will be full sounding or last a life time.
@chad7206 Well yea the whole wood lasting thing can be argued. Judging an electric guitar by its acoustic sound just isn't the first thing that comes to mind when I personally try stuff out. But to each their own.
@djr0108 Red Bears are made of polymerized animal proteins, and are basically a way to make something very similar to tortoise shell, but doesn't kill any animals, plus tortoise shell picks are illegal to make in the U.S.
it's funny how he makes her laugh with the egg frying joke and then she looks at the camera guy like "ok sorry, I'll try to contain myself" but that was a great rundown! I like how she really gets into all the detail about the wood and the pick and such...
For Sure the hottest player on the scene at the moment!! Totally ridiculous virtuosity!! In a league of only a handfull of players at the top of the tree. His endless dry English sarcasm does get a little irritating after a while.
One thing I love about Guthrie is that he's one of the only guitarists I've seen on Rig Rundown that doesn't use a buttload of rack mounted things. I always hate it when guys say "Yeah, it's a pretty simple rig." when they're, in fact, plugged into something like NASA and Bill Gates' house combined.
@terrancele He was an English major at Oxford. He almost went the other way. Lucky for us he decided to make music instead, But yes I enjoy listening to him talk also. He is one interesting fellow.
Unfortunately since this was filmed. Guthrie, his brother Seth, Dave Kilminster and Pete Riley have had all of their equipment stolen from their tour van in Italy. Hahahaha..."joyous things to behold"..the man oozes sarcasm. I think Guthrie has given guitarists worldwide a fresh perspective on the whole approach to playing.
