  • I was a frequent user of this station last year and the oddest thing was when a platform was closed and you had to go to Meadowell to get to Tynemouth as the eastbound Metro didn't stop at North Shields.

  • @Glenn1967ful I noticed some work was going on there when I was there last in August and September 2011 but I was able to get off then in both directions!

  • Nice video! I've heard there planning on putting in ticket barriers at North Shields Station, any idea if this has happend yet?

  • @60103Henry As of 09:00 this morning there were no ticket barriers there. Nexus say that they are going to put them in. North Shields is now being modernised so maybe they will realise this threat!

  • @alanheath Thanks for that! If you go there alot and see they have installed them, I would be greatfully if you could let me know!

  • @60103Henry I am no longer there - I am in Warsaw, Poland now!

  • @alanheath Thats okay! Don't worry! :)

  • The metro runs every 15 mins on each line on sundays. Mornings are less frequent, rather than half hourly each day

  • Have the covered passageways from the station building to the platforms been removed? These were the only remnants from the British Rail era. Funnily enough the station was rebuilt in the sixties following air raid damage, only to be rebuilt again 16 years later.

  • @Glenn1967ful They are still there! So it took 20 years plus for the bomb damage to be replaced? Parts of some stations still look as though they were hit by a bomb - and regretfully it is the most attractive stations!

Hello, Alan, the British Rail station was rebuilt in 1965 and then rebuilt to a corporate Metro design in 1981.

On a different note, I was in the pictures behind the station the night it stopped showing films in 1981.

  • @Glenn1967ful I thought that by 1981 they had stopped closing cinemas and were reopening them! Thanks for the insight! What happened to the cinema?

  • @alanheath3

No surprises, it's a bingo hall. I live in Whitehaven part of the time and the same thing happened here.

  • @Glenn1967ful I suppose at least the bingo hall preserved the building rather than having it knocked down!

  • I remember that being an old BR train.

  • @moominpic Great! I filmed some of the stations as well - will post them when I get round to it! I find some of the stations such as the ones on the coast particularly fascinating. Hopefully now that Deutsche Bahn is running the metro they may restore some of the old stations!
