I would really like to see this original version of The Getaway, I've had no luck finding a copy of it anywhere. Steve McQueens movie's were always Great to watch.
I just love how nonpolitical correct his films are. McQueen beats the shit out of McGraw in this film, he's racist and against homosexuals...and he's the good guy. We need films to have more balls like this.
The couple itself is boring. Interesting is how all the people in this movie accept violence as a natural thing: the salesman who sells the shotgun as a rouine thing, the old guy who is only interested if they are married or not etc. etc. . This was, is and always will be a violent country thanks to the ridiculous gun laws the USA has. So nothing to worry about as long as they only kill their own people like Presidents etc.
Not a great movie, a good one, although lots of just plain dumb scenes, and jeez McGraw is such a terrible "actress" a cardboard cut out would have had more life to it. The only good thing is she admitted she sucked shit. McQueen just owned the camera, and that's why you fools rate this thing so highly.
It was a great movie. When it was on AMC, I watched it over and over; I never got tired of it.
Ali McGraw, throwing over her privileged place as Mrs. Evans (the producer), it's all on film. There is nothing hotter on film, maybe Beatty and Annette Bening on Bugsy.
There is nobody today that can edit and compose action scenes like Peckinpah. Even when McQueen’s shoots the car outside the gun store it is made to look intense.
There is not an action star today that can hold a candle to McQueen. He left us too early.
The Europeans had their renaissance 500 years ago. America had its artistic renaissance with films from the late 60s to the mid 70s.
In the 70's the American cinema was at its artistic height - Straw Dogs , Getaway , French Connection , The Exorcist , Jaws , Taxi Driver , Godfather , Deliverance ... the list goes on and on - I personally adore Sam Peckinpah and William Friedkin
I have not seen this movie. I have seen Bullitt and loved that movie. Car chase movies of the 70's were bad ass. These days car chases are just too over the top.If you like video game reviews, music reviews, and electronics check out my channel.
Ultra Classic. no other way to put it. i remember seeing this growing up in las vegas in the late 60's, Early 70's. what a magical time that was for me. Mod still ran things, Evel Knievel, Paul McCartney n' wings singin "Live n' let die" the Desert. just bein a kid in the 70's. carefree. and.........Movies like this. God, I miss those days. Life now, Parents gone, is hard, frightening and Bitter in this Horrible fucking world of the late 2000's. I wanna go back so bad.
@drumdude46 I hear your pain. Oddly, your description of American life was what influenced me to come here to begin with. The wild outdoors and opportunity. Yes, life is very tough now. But coming from a guy who has lived in other countries, we got it good here compared to a lotta places. I sincerely hope things get better for you. I saw the Getaway on tv in the late 70's when living in London. Couldn't understand my mom's fetish for McQueen. She said he had this personality more than looks.
I saw this the other day, what a fantastic movie. The `70`s were the absolute peak of movies, I mean the amount of original classic movies in that 10 year period from 1970 to 1980 is insane, none of this remake shit you get every two seconds like today.
Clear case of the original film being better than the remake that came after. I do believe that Steve McQueen could beat the piss out of Alec Baldwin...
@LazyGigolo It was cut that way to depict prison life. It kept growing back so fast, they had to keep cutting it til they were done with all those scenes.
Peckinpah was one hell of a filmmaker. Even though this was one of his lesser efforts, it could mop the floor with 99% of the crap that comes out today. Damn, the early '70s were a great time for American films...
I have just given''The Getaway'' with Alec Baldwin about 15 minutes-yawn-Where do these contemporary actors get the balls from that they think they are beter than the originals?
Yeah I agree but McQueen needs to be in a movie surrounded by interesting characters/actors because he never once displays emotions when acting. Did good films though
@falcoman The producers/directors are to blame because they try to re-create and put their own spin on a classic. Then they hire the wrong actors, who take the job because they need the work.
Yes! I've always thought Reservoir Dogs was totally lifted from The Getaway...down to the black suit and tie McQueen wears. Thanks for the confirmation.
Yes, it was filmed in San Marcos,Texas. And the director, Sam Peckinpaw insisted that the gunfire be REAL gunfire. The mayor wouldn't allow it, so he had his crew and actors on the scene before daylight so it COULD be shot with REAL bullets...also when the movie was finished shooting, Peckinpaw (obviously an obsessive type) wanted to continue shooting, although there was no more script, and the actors and film crew had gone home. so obsession isn't always bad? a part of some genius
I don't know about Peckinpah more than he was an alcoholic and a nut.
The prison scenes appear to be filmed in Huntsville at the Ellis Unit (exterior scenes after McQueen gets released) but other scenes were filmed at "The Walls" in downtown Huntsville. (No, I was NOT an inmate there).
The bank robbery scene was filmed in downtown San Marcos, TX. When I was last in San Marcos in 2002, the building was still there although the bank had closed. This was a cool movie.
Steve McQueen is the greatest actor ever. I've been watching movies like crazy for the last 11 years and somehow I overlooked him until a few weeks ago. He's amazing and this is a great film.
A great movie. Watched it once. Nice ending too. The dont make em like the used to it seems. All we we can do now is dream of the way good movies used to be... Looks like my generation forgot all the tricks from the last previous generations...
There's a lot of wannabe's out there...There'll never be anyone as cool as McQueen again, and sure as shit won't be a breakaway Director like Peckinpah which is very sad.
