@Neena275 Translation: None shall sleep! None shall sleep! Even you, O Princess, in your cold bedroom, watch the stars.. that tremble with love and with hope! But my secret is hidden within me; none will know my name! No, no! On your mouth I will say it when the light shines! And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine! No one will know his name... and we will have to, alas, die, die! Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!
If the Three Tenors are allowed to butcher West Side Story and get away with it, I don't see why David Phelps can't put his own spin on Nessun Dorma. It's not as if he's singing it in context of the opera. He is singing it as a single one-off to celebrate great music to an audience not necessarily schooled in the technicalities of operatic arias.
David Phelps should not be compared to Pavarotti. He did not study opera.
It's like comparing Dolly Parton to Joan Sutherland. Both are giants in their genres.
This version of Nessun Dorma is not the way it was written to be performed in the opera.
But, David's passion and guts in taking this on are worth ite weight in gold - which is what he is; a golden voiced pop tenor (who can also belt out a stunning version of a difficult aria.) He delivered and his people loved it. Just saying.
wow .in the beginning i thought i wouldnt like it because of the non operatic technique, but i absolutely adored it.truely something different and simply beautiful!!!!!
For those who said it's too "pop". You have to take into account that he's not in a cathedral or huge operatic type concert hall. Nor does he have an entire orchestra backing him. Those things change the outcome of the entire performance. That's beside the point though, he has a great voice and did an amazing job. Nuf said.
He doesn't sing the song like Pavarotti because he is NOT Pavarotti. He isn't even an opera singer, but his music brings tears to my eyes. David Phelps has such a beautiful voice, and I'm glad he uses his talents to glorify God.
@dontcindyme Really? Pavarotti and lazy performance in the same sentence? I am sorry, but you are mistaken. Although this is a stellar performance from Mr. Phelps, Pavarotti and Bocelli sang this song like no one else can. There is nothing lazy about the way they portrayed this song. And if you knew a thing about music and performing, you would know that.
David doesn't need to be compared with pavarotti.! Everyone's unique! Besides, what a heck 'POP' David will make if he'll use an opera sound.? THink about it.. ^^
He has the very rare gift of being able to turn operatic into pop--it takes a fantastic voice. Yet, the song is really what's important here, and his rendition doesn't carry it. So yes, far too "poperatic".
i just don't understand i'm 17 and yes i do like poppy music But i do appreciate and admire Pavarotti's power and talents .. i wouldn't scold David for being an artist who can interpret a song and make it his own. He is singing a song that few people can sing, Can't we just appreciate it instead of degrading him? lol
..............I'm glad i heard this version first instead of getting anal and saying it's too poppy or something.... i just don't understand i'm 17 and yes i do like poppy music But i do appreciate and admire Pavarotti's power and talents .. i wouldn't scold David for being an artist who can interpret a song and make it his own. He is singing a song that few people can sing, Can't we just appreciate it instead of degrading him? lol
being criticized for doing the song a new way that best defines the artist, his talents and musical creativeness ..... too poppy? does it matter? If there is any problem it's that he did too good of a job singing his version of the it. It appeals more to my generation and you can bet i am showing all of my friends this video. I'm seventeen and I've watched this video 4 times in the last hour haha
Ohh, cooome ooon!! The voice is beautiful, but the interpretation is not on it's place. You simply cannot sing an opera song in a gospel american way. You americans want to change all music and sing it in your way. I think the composer of this area turned on the other side in his grave when he heard this. Sorry!
He such a beautiful voice. But, he is really not an opera singer. He has the range to hit the notes very sweetly, but one cannot compare him to Pavoratti singing Nessum Dorma. The breadth of Pavoratti's voice is as wide and deep as a tsunami. David doesn't have same strength of voice, nor should he. He is a pop singer, and a really good one.
I am a huge fan of David Phelps so listening to this was incredibly earth shattering. He is amazing at what he does, and opera is not what he does. Let's all stick to our areas of expertise and leave the operatic areas to trained singers who spend their lives fine tuning their DICTION and technique and who actually know what is happening in Turandot when The Unknown Prince sings the aria in the opera.
As a Phelps, Pavarotti and Bocelli fan, I must say this is sung very well. I know Phelps is capable of singing without the "pop" sound, and I honestly would've preferred that. NEVERTHELESS, Phelps has an incredible tenor voices and performs this song with amazing vocals and unsurpassed passion.
He has a voice straight from God!! One can feel the presence of God in all His songs and all the Gaither Band's songs! Guy Penrod has a blessed voice also!!!
I feel bad for the guys in the background. It's like having to give an oral presentation after the person who just knocked everyone's socks off with theirs.
The last note is basically the trademark of this aria, and David didn't quite give it justice. But other than that, he has great overall vocals, and his rendition is refreshingly beautiful.
I like D. Phelps and He's one of the best 'tenor area' reaching singers but for Nessum Dorma, something is really missing. Nowhere near the Pavarotti's the golden time power. Just I so pity that.
....eh...It sounded nice I guess....but he made it too poppy. Its nice that he was honoring Pavarotti but...I didn't like it all that much...its meant to sound operatic. It just rubbed me the wrong way sounding all poppy. But I absolutely LOVE David Phelps.
@katemcgizzle25 I guess I know what you're going to say... but in all fairness Pavarotti sang w/ Bon Jovi and other 'Pop' stars, so I guess turn about is fair play once in awhile --- I'm sure David is giving respect to all those great tenors and not claiming to be one.... though in my opinion, he's right up there. :)
Best version ever. And to Rocketman 19 and mua06dt; you are tone deaf. He blows Pavoratti and his lazy performance away. Bocelli and Pavoratti might have strong voices and hit the notes, but the sheer expression and performance of Davids interpretation can't be beat.
OMG! He has got a lovely voice, but this is NOT THE WAY TO SING CLASSICAL ITALIEN OPERA! He will need some years in Italy (or other European countries) to fully understand how to really sing opera. This is just way to American...
@mua06dt You know, people like you are idiots!!!! People like you think they know something about singing and you don't know SQUAT about it!!!! Do you even know what a B natural is??!! Someone like you has NO CONCEPTION to hearing a very trained classical voice like David Phelps and to think it sounds like a pop song shows your illiteracy!! Please post a video of you singing this song and lets see if you can even get through the first verse!!!
@mua06dt agreed! he's good but even if he has the range (sort of) I don't think he has the full rich sound tenors have. It's okay to play with something but I just think he does it too much.
I agree with most that this is a classic aria and therefore should be sung as so. However I cannot overlook David's ability to match tone with the likes of Pavoratti and Bocelli while singing in his own way. To infuse those runs into his performance only proves how fantastic David is in tone and vocal control. This was not an operatic display. It was a way to introduce people to arias in a style they are accustomed to. Well done.
I am Sorry David, But I think this song does not match with the tone of your voice, your voice is sweet , not strong enough to sing an opera, This is not your style, no way,!.. Keep your focus, you have a beautiful voice but don't destroy the melody of this beautiful opera ! HEY EVERYBODY.....this is my opinion....
@jely57 while this may be your opinion it doesn't mean you're right. David has an incredibly powerful voice. The vocal control he possesses is unmatched. what he has done is cater to his audience. listen to what he says before he singsand how mark is joking at the end. this song isn't meant to be a "night at the opera" , its purely entertainment and to best do that he sings the song with an pop quality. David certainly has the capacity to sing this aria operatically but he chooses not to
@jely57 Your opinion is noted, but not everyone is as versatile as David Phelps to have such a variety of styles. Give him a lot more credit than that!!
My ALL TIME MOST Favorite Voice, David Phelps, in a CLASS all his own! I enjoy the great well known Tenors, Enrico Caruso, Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti, Bocelli but in my opinion David Phelps eclipses their talent. I also enjoy Larnell Harris, Steven Green, Gus Gaches moving from Tenors to Baritone Wintley Phipps who also has the best speaking Voice.
@SkiesVibrant Amen!!!! He is quite the role model for the young aspiring Christian artist as well. I like this rendition because he's just singing, he isn't trying to sound a certain way. It's a natural sound and I love it :)
@hoover4000 really??? That is shocking kind of. Well only because he is on the stage so often, but then again his witty humor makes it less surprising that he's soft spoken,
i am glad that this gift in this young man David Phelps is being used for the Lord. Because he has submitted his will to God he is blessing others with this wonderful, wonderful voice. God bless you, David Phelps and those who you are affliated with, especially your parents for investing into you to bring you to this level in your life
@babystinky I think it's nice he did. I mean, if you wanna hear this as it should be sung you should just listen to Pavarotti. David Phelps style of singing is like this and this is really how he should sing this song.
This is one of the best "pop" renditions of this aria I have heard. As a classically trained operatic tenor I can appreciate what David is doing here. His Italian needs some work and I agree with those that don' like the extra notes or trills he inserts. I think he could actually provide a more classical rendition if he wanted to - he has a fabulous instrument.
I'm sorry....this man is a great and talented singer....but he can not give me chills like Pavarotti can on this song. His rendition of Oh Holy Night is fantastic...but he doesn't compare to Pavarotti when he does Nessun Dorma.
@SkiesVibrant I personally think that andrea bocelli is the best tenor out there. not to say that david isnt good but andrea is the real deal. especially with these type of songs. But david still rules
@SkiesVibrant not the finest tenor but he's very good yes! THere are tenors far more skilled than him, look at his breathing it could be a lot better and he could hit that op B a lot better if his breathing was more correct
...before hearing his version, I thought that this song couldn't be sung outside of the lyric repertoire... and now... I have changed definitly my opinion!! SUBLIME!!!
I really so impress with David, He IS Really a super star, but He likes and sing gospel song, and with opera song too.......He has gifted voice from God, Jesus loves you..............
@hoover4000 OMG I HAVE MET HIM SEVERAL TIMES AND HE IS SO SOFT SPOKEN AND SO SWEET ADN HE LOVES TO SMILE!!!!! AND LAUGH!!!!! JUST A WONDEFUL GUY!! HIS WIFE IS AWESOME TO!!! HE BROUGHT HER TO A CONCERT ONTIME I WAS THERE AND WHEN THEY WERE OUT SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS HIS WIFE WAS THERE THEY ARE THE GREATEST COUPLE!!!!
He should sing it like an opera singer,he can sing like that, just listen to his "o holy night", great tenor voice.Pavarotti and Rosvaenge are still best singers for this aria. Great performance:)
what an awsome song voice, it doesn't get any better than that!!!!!!!love David Phelps voice, always have ever since the 1st time i heard it, know combined with Michael's voice i just sit everyday & listen to all of them.....May GOD contiue to bless all of the Gaither Boys old & new & or reunited!!!!!!!!
i wish he didn't do those 'runs' in the song, and would sing it more operatic, he could do a very nice version with a more traditional sound. i would love to hear him just let out the 'opera' in the song.
@babystinky I think it's nice he did. I mean, if you wanna hear this as it should be sung you should just listen to Pavarotti. David Phelps style of singing is like this and this is really how he should sing this song.
@babystinky Couldn't agree more. He had a pitch perfect tone on "bocca" at 4:40 and then ruined it by putting that inflection at the end. His voice is amazing, but this isn't a pop song and shouldn't have that stuff in it!
I don't care what he sings as long as I can hear him.

David Phelps is the finest Tenor on the planet right now. What a blessing that he chose to sing for Jesus.
SkiesVibrant 1 year ago 54
@SkiesVibrant I personally think that andrea bocelli is the best tenor out there. not to say that david isnt good but andrea is the real deal. especially with these type of songs. But david still rules
adhd110 1 year ago
@SkiesVibrant not the finest tenor but he's very good yes! THere are tenors far more skilled than him, look at his breathing it could be a lot better and he could hit that op B a lot better if his breathing was more correct

He should sing it like an opera singer,he can sing like that, just listen to his "o holy night", great tenor voice.Pavarotti and Rosvaenge are still best singers for this aria. Great performance:)

i wish he didn't do those 'runs' in the song, and would sing it more operatic, he could do a very nice version with a more traditional sound. i would love to hear him just let out the 'opera' in the song.
babystinky 1 year ago 5
@babystinky that would be an interesting sound...but i also think the diversity with which he approaches the song makes it all the more intriguing.
reziboy100 1 year ago
@babystinky I think it's nice he did. I mean, if you wanna hear this as it should be sung you should just listen to Pavarotti. David Phelps style of singing is like this and this is really how he should sing this song.
Zhachrod 1 year ago
@babystinky Couldn't agree more. He had a pitch perfect tone on "bocca" at 4:40 and then ruined it by putting that inflection at the end. His voice is amazing, but this isn't a pop song and shouldn't have that stuff in it!
GooglyBandits 1 year ago
@babystinky Where do you think lyric 'runs' come from?

@babystinky thank you! thats exactly what i thought.

Between David's attempts at humor, Kevin Williams on the guitar, and Mark Lowry - GVB has a wonderful balance of humor.
