hes trying to explain the musicality of the piece by using that sound to express what staccato should sound like for people who don't know. You cant count staccato, so hes showing it through the tut's. its not dumb, its smart

this is indeed helpful but you should observe proper finger positions to avoid strained hands. practice using your ring and pinky fingers. and it it'll be easier to play the piano with correct finger position. :D cheers!

Just some feedback: it could be easier to keep up with you if you counted like 1-2-3-4 (or maybe even up to 8) instead of that tah-tah-tah-tah!

'tah tah tah' IS counting. 'tah' represents a quarter note. It's a simple system of teaching what 'length' to associate with a note. Maybe should have used 'tee,' for eighth notes though, as it sounds to me to be whole notes in the left hand and 8th notes in the right hand.
