This guy if he is still alive is one lucky bastard, his head hits the ground with such force two or three times, dam what a crash! Its one of the worst I've ever seen
@bad65stang Yes that's true, but the more recent roll cages that surround the driver and keep them safe have only been around since the late eighties, this car would not have had that yet, it was built in the mid eighties I would say, but still considered safe then.
@68SSCAM well i can see how they thought they were safe....i mean who thinks while they are staging that"hmmm i think this run im gunna end up in the wall"...i mean nothing like this has happen before so i can see what you mean
They changed the rules based on this crash, requiring arm restraints, even on cars slower than this, and a plate or net above the driver on cars with a full chassis, so this wouldn't happen if the roof came off in a crash. Seat belts come loose if they're repeatedly jarred, which is why, eventually, he ended up so far out of the car. I heard his arms got broken as they got pinned between the roll cage and the ground.
I always thought something broke, the cross wind thing doesn't look right.
I know Tony real well. After he got past the finishing line he was hit by a strong side wind which threw him into the grass. It's the first time I've seen the video...WOW! I know there wasn't much to salvage.
This video is from the early 80's, maybe even 70's. Man there are some thick, thick people that comment on stuff here. All our group1 racing, including those 8000hp Top Fuel cars, is done at state of the art drag strips. This video highlights a time when safety wasn't as well practiced as it is now. Like most motorsport back then.
then why dont i see any 8000 horsepower cars in these countries?...cause they dont know how to drive a quarter mile without driving in a straight line
This is a bad wreck...bent the cage...a car like that he should have had arm restraints or something....but hell its Eurpoe they are like...oh IDK like 20 yrs behind the US in racing technology. They buy our old leftovers and hand me downs and try to do what we are doing today with yesterday's scrap. Just doesn't work out too well....
Glad you did your research... This is in Australia, and this crash happened about 25 years ago. Most racing categories here these days run current US products or better. "20yrs behind the US in racing technology", that's just plain arrogant.
News is that there is going to be a new multi-purpouse built track in adelaide, allwe need is the approval from the council and the government is supporting it. (ABOUT TIME!)
wow did that guy walk away? you could totally see his arms floppin around, and it looks as if he lands on his head the one time when it's rollin in slow motion

He's still alive, then? That was probably like the crash Richard Petty had at Darlington in 1970. Luckiest man on Earth that day, this fellow is.
