Ableton: Creating Beats

guys I have a problem, I'm on a PC and however I try it, I can't open Impulse without a preset. It doesn't show the icon that the instruments do, instead it shows impulse as a folder which i can't use as an instrument. any help? cheers

Why not just click on the loop and SLICE TO MIDI TRACK? Then drag into impulse. It does all the work for you.

can anyone help me out im looking for a software that i can make all my drums and bass for when i.play gigs ill have a set tempo in the drums and then i loop and play my other instruments over it live. If anybody is having issues with accomplishing this on the PC, the procedure is slightly different. Instead of holding the down button, you just drag the clip like he did, but instead you have to hover it over the impulse slot in arrangement view for 2 seconds before impulse appears on the bottom of the screen. Hope that helps

for some reason when I do this... every time I head down to the impulse track, it un-selects the portion of the audio track. Then, when I bring it into Impulse, it takes THE WHOLE audio track, rather than the part I selected. Help?

@Codyyyn I had the same issue. If you are using a PC and not a mac, hold the shift key and drag the selection down. That's how I did it anyway ;)

A slightly less efficient way to do it: rather than dragging each drum clip into Impulse, crop them as audio files. From there, drop each new clip into an audio cell in session view. This takes up more audio tracks, but also allows you to play the samples live with quantization on. For someone with piss-poor rhythm like me, that's a godsend.

Whenever I drag an MP3 file into an audio or MIDI track, it gets the BPM completely random in different sections of the song, so it's all weird sounding and makes the song sound like a robot singing it, how do I fix this?

@voodoochili12 I had the same problem when I tried it twice in a row after reading this. I then sat for a second and tried SHIFT + Down Arrow, worked for me. Please let me know if this solved your problem.

@socc3rchamp yeah. You need the drum presets on impulse. If you dont have that, go to preferences and click repair library. Then you should get a live pack called analong. It'll give all these effects and presets. when you're done with that, you go to the one you want, and double click it. It'll become its own midi track. Then, under the title, there are little empty rectangles. Double click on the first one, but DO NOT click on the circle within it. Once that's done, use keys a to k to play.

@rodoebar nevermind, i found the answer. once i dragged impulse into a midi track directly beneath the audio track containing the drum hits i wished to sample, i proceeded to select my single drum hit. next, RATHER THAN just hitting the down arrow key to move from my highlighted drum hit to the impulse track, i pressed SHIFT+DOWN ARROW to select both the aforementioned audio track AND the impulse track. i was then able to drop the hit into the designated impulse device slot. PHEW!

I was reading some of the comments way back and noticed a lot of FL Studio Talk. When I used it I just imported my own samples/vsts. If you don't know how to do that you probably shouldn't be using it anyways. Nowadays It's all Ableton for me. I found that recording actual instruments in Ableton made my workflow faster and it doesn't eat up as much RAM as FL. Rewire reason and all its Refills in Ableton and it works like a dream. Reason has Record now so that it has more DAW capabilities too.

This video is based on Live 6...the "Down Arrow" part doesn't work anymore with Live 8. What you need to do is drag the selection to the track title bar and hold it there for a second (i.e., drag the part of the drum sample you want to put in the kit to the area where it says "2 MIDI" on the upper right. Even better to use Drum Racks than Impulse these days...

@Senj1n yeah except reason isnt really a daw. while it is theoretically possible to create whole projects on it, it is made more for creating killer loops...that's why they created re-wire, so that ppl could use it with real daws. reason is more like a virtual synth/effects rack on steroids. and looking vat it from that angle it is fukkin awesome. rewire it into your favorite daw and i bet you will love it.
