It is really funny how people judge over one of the last century's best basses by hearing him with their stupid little laptop speakers or just without enough knowledge. But anyway, that's the internet...
Yes, I agree. Surely, he was very successful and everybody knows him but in my opinion his voice is overrated because of his wrong singing position which never was in his mask/ nose; call it whatever. So thats all. As I said I´m also bass and I have a very good teacher and so I know what it means to sing in the one and only right way. So it´s natural when I´m hearing other bass voices, that I have a critical opinion; just as critical as to myself.
Wow, I'm so glad you are here to help us distinguish between a frog and a respected singer.....whew.... I was afraid for a moment I might enjoy this lovely performance by a very good bass..... Thank you for saving me.
It´s easy to explain what I meant and thats a technical problem in general of Kurt Moll: The focus of his voice lies not in the centre of his nose and so he sounds not sharp enough to have a open and clear sound. His singing-position is somewhere in the neck where all your tones cannot really cover the orchestra; and can you hear overtones from him? I think not...
Yeah, um, I disagree..... Good singer. Technically and otherwise. I think. "Center of his nose", "sharp enough to have a clear sound", "somewhere in the neck"?? Perhaps in your search for overtones, you missed that this gentleman has had a long career, singing some very hard music, without sustaining any vocal damage and is still singing today. This man is a far better singer than many. Are you going to instruct him how to "cover the orchestra with his tones"?
I did not said that he´s not even good enough to hear him,but if you´re connected each passing day with opera singing, especially with basses, because I´m one,I think I´m able and experienced enough to say that Molls voice doesn´t come up to in the centre in his "mask"; it stays in his neck, in Germany we say "knödeln"... that has the acoustic effect, that his voice doesn´t reach the front, but behind of him. Besides,Moll HAD good musical skills,no question!
Kurt Moll principally does everything correctly for his own voice to a high enough degree that asking for absolute perfection is unreasonable. BUT your gut reaction is not completely crazy.
As for trying to neatly fit singers into a box based on theoretical perfections, is naive. You, yourself, may find that you unlock something special in yourself by giving up on one aspect of the "perfect" technique (or at least accept your version of it) and focus on the positives.
I think to focus on the positives is surely a good point, but in my opinion its very dangerous to keep that ALWAYS in your mind because otherwise a singer forgets about his singing mistakes and so he isn´t foccused enough to correct them. Besides, a professionell singer is always on his way getting better; whats wrong in following this way?(Sorry about my bad english...) I would never say,I´m a good singer, because I´m always on my way...
Kurt Moll went a full and glorious career filling opera houses and maintaining a healthy powerful voice from the start of the opera to the end. We can definitively call him a success.
His physical approach, glottal pressure, "hook" and placemen and his personal balance of chiaroscuro (however you want to put it) worked for him to a great degree. It wasn't always pretty but it worked. He was imperfect in his own way but i don't think he could have sung better. Not with his own particular voice.
best Sarrastro on youtube!

Aside from Moll's poor singing, this tempo is obscenely slow.

Kurt Moll had a HUGE voice and had one helluva time using it in the middle and up top because of it. Was he perfect, no.
$1,000 bucks says he tried his best to do everything you think you know about singing and ended up where he was, a great!
Kurt Moll's low F remains the biggest thing I have heard live. Recordings do nothing to show that.
If his voice scaled up even bigger, it would have been insane to let it loose. To stay in tune and flexible he had to push the Rhine into a fire hose.
