Francis I, her husband, was the next male in line for the throne so the old King married her to him so at least his grandson could sit on the throne.

Claude was actually the ruler of the Duchy of Brittany though as she inherited her mother's title. Also, if you watch the show you might remember Princess Marguerite of Navarre, who has a short fling with Henry (which is historically inaccurate), she is the sister to Francis I

I like Queen Claude, even before seeing her in season one. She was said to be the Katherine of Aragon of France, in similarities. She was pious like her sister consort, and was a gracious, sweet lady.
