  • Hey Guys! Who cares really who is irsh or not? I am a fucking german guy and I love them all! I don´t care about if one of those is irish, english or geman or what ever! They did a great music together and there is no doubt about it! For me Phil is the greatest songwriter ever, Brian the best drummer ever and all of them guitar player are great! Every one of them has it´s special type of playing guitars and I can tell only by hearing them, who it is! So let´s cool down and enjoy the music!

  • The drum solo was awesome!

  • Thin Lizzy was so much better then other so called legendary bands a shame they play one song by them and thats what there known for

  • @glove8888

Only one song? You don't know what are you talking about. Not a damn clue.

  • I dunno why you lot are talking about about Gary Moore when it was Brian Robertson who played this gig.....!!

  • GARY MOORE THE MAN WHO FUCKED UP LIZZY

  • @tealshelp GARY MOORE WAS BORN IN BELFAST, SO THEREFORE HE IS AN IRISHMAN !!! HOW DID HE FUCK UP THIN LIZZY ?

  • @tealshelp GARY MOORE WAS BORN IN BRIGHTON ENGLAND . READ YOUR BOOKS , BUT IF HE WAS BORN IN BELFAST WOULD THAT NOT MAKE HIM BRITISH NOT IRISH , I AM IRISH GARY MOORE WAS ENGLISH

  • @tealshelp SO PHIL LYNOTT IS AN ENGLISHMAN AS WELL, HE WAS BORN IN STAFFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND TO AN IRISH MOTHER AND SOUTH AMERICAN NEGRO FATHER ! GARY MORE IS DEFINATELY IRISH, ARE YOU SAYING PEOPLE IN NOTHERN IRELAND AREN'T IRISH ? TRY TELLING YOUR REPUBLICAN BROTHERS IN THE NORTH THEY AREN'T IRISH ! PLEASE PLEASE SHOW SOME BASIC KNOWLEDGE

  • @shambles7ful your in Australia i am in Ireland so i think it is you who needs some basic knowledge GARY MOORE WAS BORN IN BRIGHTON ENGLAND . ASK HIS KID BROTHER CLIFF MOORE

  • @tealshelp aarrhh mouthing off AGAIN !!!

  • troppo tosti.

  • Lizzy where and always will be the best band in the world. And would have been a lot bigger if it had not been for the Engilsh man Gary Moore the man who fucked up Lizzy big time

  • @tealshelp Englishman UHH, Gary Moore is an Irishman you friggin tool !!! The greatest guitarist to this god damn world has ever seen !!! R.I.P

  • @shambles7ful Well go read your books Gary Moore was born in Brighton England I am Irish he was not

  • Downey never got the recognition that he deserves!! Watching the others from Thin Lizzy make their fortunes elsewhere-- as with Phil Lynott, Gary Moore (R,I.P.), Robbo, etc, makes me wish he did tioi.

  • totally agree with you all, Brian Downey is definitely the most under rated rock drummer of our time. He, John Bonham & Stewart Copeland where/are my 3 favourites & while John Bonham & Stewart Copeland where highly rated it was very rare to ever hear much mention at all of Brian Downey, a drumming genius & so relaxed, check his grip on his sticks & the semi-Moeller techinque strokes in his snare & toms!! Awesome, what an inspiration.

  • First band I ever saw live, in 1979, and I've never seen a better live drummer since.

    Awesome Brian, true understated talent.

  • What a performance on drums - Mr Brian Downey I salute you. Masterpiece

  • only the best x

  • Good tune, but the live version is so much better, double guitars just makes it perfect, in my opinion.

  • did he FLIP his stick in the middle of the solo at 4:00?

  • 1:45 is the picture for the ages.

  • Brian and Phil a partnership until Phil died way to soon!!

  • Saw them in Galway Ireland in 1983 . Not seen anything like them since .

  • Brian was playing double bass drums too, altogether one of the most under-rated, if not the most under-rated drummers in rock...

  • Black magic... mmh really... fantastic !

  • Brian Downey for Taoiseach!!!

  • Thank god phil lynott was keen on rock, rather then soft pop or somethan like that..... rock is best

  • Least he was recognised in the top 100 Drummers in Rolling Stones Survey number 82 my opinion he should have been in the top 10!!!!

  • yes BRIAN DOWNEY you are fucken awesome DRUMMER.

  • absolute epicnessssssss

  • srsly... do they still rock?

  • Brian Downey & Tommy Aldridge are the best two footed drummers on the f*in' planet. Their 16th notes anyway. I know Simon Phillips is amazing and Terry Bozzio uses his feet like an octopus. But given the context and genre, you can't touch these guys.

  • I want to SHA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LALALALALALALALA

  • Well done Downey*****

  • Show me one drummer who hasn't borrowed bits and pieces from those who influenced them and took it and put it together and made it his own!!!

  • Shame the camera people (director) hadn't a clue about drumming.....if only they had zoomed in on his legs at work! Man he made it look effortless.

  • Thin Lizzy rocks so hard.

  • Give's me the shiver's EVERY time, absolutely stunning!!!!!!!!

  • WOW

  • wow !!!! ;)

  • thin lizzy should be with us in these dark days of bs music..

100% pure rock from the soul 2 the heart..

    PRICELESS

  • Listen to Ian Paice on The Mule on "Made in Japan" by Deep Purple.... Think our Brian ripped off this solo from Ian near the end!

  • Brian Robertson used the wah-wha pedal in many solo's.I like that very much.

And together with Gorham(one octave different) the Riffs.Very harmoniously.Great cast.

    Great Time

  • Awesome,Brian Downey is right up there with the best rock drummers of all time,Heavy driving grooves with dynamics and feel that blow many others out of the water... i'm lucky enough to play in a band that do a few 'Lizzy' numbers...if only i had a fraction of Brian's skill :) ....'Emerald' always gets my in a cold sweat! lol

  • brian downey is a fuckin machine

  • Brian you fuckin headcase!! ace solo!

  • thin lizzy was far too awsome for their time

  • Damn, I forgot how GREAT this band was. Every song is a masterpiece. :-)

  • Has to be the best drum solo ever forgotten how good really was

  • yes!! the drummer is the best!!

  • Brian Downey is a quite underatted drummer i think he should be up there with Bonham , Paice, Ward Etc

  • If there is one drummer more underated than Brian, it is surely Bill Ward, a fantastic drummer who was as instrumental to the Sabbath sound, as Downey was to Lizzy.

  • @MotorheadDrew this whole band is underrated

  • I hate what Thin Lizzys legacy has become, its a friggin tribute band these days!

  • If any caught the 'John Bonham/Keith Moon Show', sorry 'I'm in a rock and roll band' about drummers they would have noticed there wasn't a single mention of Big 'Ol Brian or Bill Ward or Mitch Mitchell. That show sucks dick.

  • @JonnyBlahBlah You are so right, you would think they were the only drummers in the world, a lot of Keith Moons drumming was very untidy, I think he was grossly over-rated.

  • @roimlil Agreed. Saw them live in 1976. Moon couldn't keep time, very messy.

  • @apachestar Thanks for your backup apachestar, The who with Keith Moon were a bit like cream, when it worked it sounded great, but it didnt work very often, drummers are there for a reason, to hold it all together. The fact he never used a hi-hat says it all.

  • to do this solo, after doing double bass with both feet constantly throughout the song is insane! his legs musta been killing, well done Brian Downey!!!!

  • Man, he FLOWS over those drums!

  • Brian is just like the T-1000 in Terminator 2, he just becomes. A total Machine but the the most humble bloke you will ever hope to meet in your life, a contradiction in terms I know.

  • wow

  • Best rock drummer ever.Just go away dont even respond. Thanks

  • Downey, you M*therF**cking Genious Drummer! DAMN. Really amazing double bass-drum double beat solo. I never knew. Whoah.

  • one o the greatest rock bands ever if not the best

  • Holt shit,Brian is amazing

  • I Feel Blessed to Have seen this Line up on Johnny The Fox Tour....2 of the finest Guitarest in Rock N Roll..I Think..R.I.P. Phil...

  • HevyImpaler Saxon wern't even formed when this drum solo was created, this is from 1978 live at the Rainbow theatre, Saxon we're formed 1979. I think you got it the wrong way round mate,

  • Nothing could get as heavy as this stuff for that time (except Stained Class) ... Thin Lizzy should be up there with Sabbath, Priest and Motörhead.

That drum solo is insane! There's a Saxon moment from 4:15 to 4:22 (sounds like the ending of See The Light Shining, just two years earlier).

  • Live and Dangerous album is awesome.

  • People, the song is all about the drum solo, there are miles better songs that thin lizzy did for the insane guitar solos! This is Brian Downey's song, and so it should be, he is stupidly underrated nowadays, and this solo proves it, such amazing co-ordination with the hands and feet that non-drummers can't appreciate, he was a fukin GOD!

Thin Lizzy was a true band, ever single member of the band (at this time and various other periods) was hugely talented, what lots of bands miss nowadays!

  • dude please lets all just shut the fuck up and enjoy the fuckin song.. you're wastin your time..

can't win arguements over the internet anyways..

  • @thecouls Well said but the guitar playing is still legendary too :-) It seems that to have talent these days is seen as being uncool. Great drummer

  • @thecouls Brian Downey is a fantastic Drummer..his feel and understanding of how to play for the Song is unparalleled amongst a lot of Rock Drummers.

  • @thecouls I wonder if the lineup for 2011 will be satisfying :/

  • @thecouls What you said about Brian Downey is all true one of the most underrated drummers of all time. Another great drum fill is played on Bad Reputation. Simply Awesome.

  • @thecouls Most big bands of today like Iron maiden and Motorhead look up to Thin lizzy, and they solomly miss them. Most Metal fans fail to appreciate this!

  • @thecouls I remember when I saw the show in Sweden on the same Tour.

The drum solo was just mindmelting, they did some kind of sound effect so the drums solo swirled round the arena.

  • that is a drum solo

  • the best band best drum solo ever

  • OMG im still in love with Phil....first album I ever got 4 xmas when I was 11, Thin Lizzy, live and dangerous...What can ya say...

  • My god Brian had an amazing stamina

  • i seriously jizzed listening to scott play his solo from 1:50-2:00. god he is my favorite guitarist ever, long live lizzy

  • It actually Scott Gorham (Red guy) whos playing but they trained the cameras onto Brian Robertson becuase he moved into what they thought was the Solo position and so filmed the wrong guy they share the solo at points but gorham startyed the solo and robs finished it

  • What an underrated band! not just the drummer, look at the bassist guitarists and the whole band.... just plain amazing

    Unfortunately underrated

  • They broke up too soon too

  • Oh, for sure, i wish Phil was still alive but unfortunately he had to die like half of the world's greatest rock stars :(

  • they were not underated they were extremely popular back in the day. i cant think of anhy band to compare them with whos had a similar amount of success in the modern day

  • true straight goin, u have to love the flanger...

    What an awsome guitar duo!!

Thin Lizzy was so underrated at their time, it's a shame.

The Live and Dangerous Double Album is a milestone in REAL music. (!!!)

Absolutly a kind of it's own, this album is heckin' LEGEND !

  • Where's the flanger?

  • @boomfield This band was one of my earliest influences; and to this day I consider them to be one of the best ever

  • what a fucking drummer. the solo in te UK 75 album is even better than this!

  • Up the Dubs!!!! Hails from boston, my family's from Cork! WOOOOOOOO Sha-la-la!!!Brian Downey is a god, rip phil, I love thin lizzy!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • isaneeee!!!!!!!!!!!wooow

  • One of THE most underrated drummers ever. And as a fellow skinsman, I know what I'm talking about - he says modestly ;o)

  • It's such a shame people like Brian Downey are so underrated only because he wasn't in any of the absolute biggest bands. If he did the exact same thing for well, Led Zeppelin, he would be one of the Gods ! Just like Bonzo :)

  • Very true. R.I.P. John.

  • Listen to that fucking bass...

  • nope, Philo was Black Elvis.

  • This is Thin Lizzy at their prime..Great stuff...

  • Brian, the steamhammer, Downey. He and Bonzo from Led Zeppelin are the greatest drummers.I love tham both.

  • How could Downey be wearing a sweater playing like that!? I'd faint.

  • elvis presley was the KING...Philo knew this....still Philo was Black Elvis

  • ummmm no actually Chuck Berry was the black Elvis, but Phil is my favorite singer of all time anyways.

  • Comment removed

  • that drum solo is truely astounding! so consistent and a delight to watch

  • Holy!Thin Lizzyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

  • Hit It

    on..

    ..

    5.24!

  • The best Drummer of what?Or in what?

  • I believe his/her statement should be clear to anyone with a modicum of intellect.

  • Brian Downey in my eyes is the best drummer..my own opinion. iv grown up listening to thin lizzy from a very young age... i think he's very very UNDER-rated!

  • definately :) so are ginger baker and kenny jones (in my opinion lol :) but yeh downey rocks :)

  • RIP PHIL

  • Kinda .. Thank You.. just Wish I could have Met Phil.. that would have Been The Best Ever. btw Aerosmith Back 30+yrs was also one the very Best, as was U.F.O Scorpions w/ Uli, Ac/Dc w/ Bon.. man those were the Days.. LONG LIVE Rockin ROLL. PieCe (-_o

  • I've Met Brian & Scott in '96 and John Skyes.. and it was a Magic moment in my life I shall never Forget.. Brian is a Great guy even put Me on Guest list for 2nd night in a row seeing em in Calif. yes I got autographs.. Thx for posting this Great Video

  • lucky mothafucka

  • The three drummers at that time were all jazz/swing prog drummers. Ian paice, cozy powell, and my favorite Brian(the man)Downey. Those three drummers(legends)were the reason i started playing in the first place. These gentlemen are true players. My hats off to them...rock on!

  • Bought this DVD as it is now released again. A must have...

  • haha im watching it on vh1 classic right now. this song is amazing!

  • best band ever was.... phil rulez

  • best drummer in the fucking world!!!!:D

  • Along with Rod D'eath who played with Roy Gallagher in the 70's Downey was one one the most creative.

  • Well though out, superbly executed and solid f***ing drum solo. His technique is sweet. I love this song as well. Metal at it's finest.

  • Metal? lol

  • Best Jazz song ever!

  • Not surprising really alot of the precursor metal band were basically blues rock based on black music. You can really hear the jazz roots of metal drumming here.

  • wow, this is the first drum solo i have ever seen that has been even close to as good as Neil Perts drum solos :P

  • Brian is better

  • THAT WAS AWESOME!

the other hard rock and metal bands, that are actually more popular, have so much to thank to thin lizzy.... the best double pedal drum solo I've ever heard before judas priest's Painkiller one

  • best band ever

  • what a drum solo!!! i have their double disk "Live & Dangerous" from 1980s or older lol

  • Closest to bad Lizzy came was with Snowy White on Chinatown a lot of fillers on there Sugar Blues for example

  • no way man! Chinatown rocked! 'Night Life', 'Shades of blue orphanage' and 'renegade' were close to bad' 'nightlife' was probably the worst. but a bad Thin Lizzy album is better then most bands anyway. Thin Lizzy rocks no matter what though

  • In terms of Thin Lizzy I think Renegade was a weak record. In terms of that album compared to other albums by other bands it is some really good material. That says something. Even the weakest Thin Lizzy records are better then a ton of other bands material out at the time and today

  • Yeah. Main reasons why I dont like Renegade is pretty uninspired writing, exept in few tracks and Snowy White. Man his solos were weak and his sound was, well, how would I put it, fluey. Gorham kicks his butt in songs like Sugarblues and the title track from Chinatown. But this song rocks, especially mr Downeys drums.

  • WHOA.LIZZY COULD ROCK OUT.

  • Lizzy was incomparable. Phil Lynott was the most charismatic frontman in human history. He was also an incomparable lyricist and -- according to people who met him -- a really good "bloke." I miss that guy EVERY DAMN DAY.

  • Sha La La has to be one of my favourite Lizzy songs it really shows what a powerhouse they where, there are'nt many rock bands that can stand up to Thin Lizzy

  • Phil was great but the twin Guitars of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson along with drummer Brian Downey made that band the best!!

  • wow does he deserve more credit.

    LIZZY FOR LIFE!

  • has to be one of the greatest drummers ever!!!

  • after all these fuckin years still an explosive band!!!!!!!!!damn i wish i was there

  • Brian Downey..fucking legend.

Lizzy were the business live..a real hard grafting rock band.

  • line bass with guitars are just perfect...

imagine this thing played by strokes in actual days? strokes would be just like beatles.... lol!!!

thin lizzy is a fucking band.. and almost no one knows it :(

  • You can always hear the king's call

    ;)

  • Amen! And I cried the night *this* king died, too.

Dammit, Phil, I miss ya, brother....

  • Mydad says he can still remember this concert when he listens to teh cd, when they were all chanting b4 jailbreak. He always said they were phenomenal live, but wow, i wish i was around wen the were at their prime. Luv Thin Lizzy

  • Your dad is bang on. I saw them on their farewell tour in '83 at Hammersmith Odeon. All the old guitarists were there. As a 16 year old and a fan of Lizzy for 7 years by then I can't explain what it felt like to see Phil in the flesh. I couldn't move. Still my favourite band of all time.

  • Is there any bad song Thin Lizzy recorded?I don`t think so.

  • me either

  • Fats.

  • Fats.

  • perfect!!!!

  • b. downey does not have the credit he deserves on r'n'r. fact.

  • you couldn't be more right! Brian Downy was looked up to by many top drummers of today.

  • Yep, technically superb!!!

  • No one inside Thin Lizzy has, actually (but Gary Moore, and he was in the band only for an album and a half...). And that's really a pity!

  • what a fricken amazing band

  • this is the true lizzy, everything else is just a toy! haha

  • Brilliant Downey's drum solo is awesome. This line up was the best.

  • i love the way phil leaves out the line "take my jelly roll" haha great stuff :)

  • the first verse of this song = lyrical bliss, vocalist supremist....this is THE GREATEST THIN LIZZY line-up and if you think otherwise you must be out of your mind!!!!

  • Yeah downey was just solid as fuck, drumming in the rocker is unreal, and that interlude in havin a good time rocks too. Everyone associated with this band could teach anyother band a thing or too. The only thing better then lizzy in concert would be rory gallagher and thin lizzy playn the same bill!!!!!

  • brian Downey = awesome drummer

  • Thin Lizzy rock! I heard this song live on December 4th 07. It was awesome!!!!!!!

  • Greatest band over every other if you ask me!!

  • Amen.

  • Come on Lizzy fans 'lets hear it for the MOST under-rated drummer in rock!!

As the late great Philo says' The one and only' Brian Downey!!

He swings like a mother, rocks and drives da band!!

  • Yes. Listen to his chops on The Rocker on the live and dangerous album.

  • This is probably the best song on Live and Dangerous. The album version is nowhere near as good.
