Because gay marriage is a politically untenable position and civil unions are. You could fight for gay marriage, spend more time/energy/money going for the ultimate end and most likely loose and create a backlash against gays. Or, you could take civil unions as a stepping stone and just accept that once civil unions are in place, Gay Marriage will follow.

We are a diverse nation and to say that you can pray in school would be fine, but different people pray in different ways and for different religions and you would have to let everyone do this - consuming valueable learning time.
