Saw them perform this live at The Warehouse in Toronto in 1996, its on their 1st album and cassette demo, but to experience this song live, something I will never forget
Too bad about the sound. What was the deal with this guy? So much talent. Was there an attitude issue? Seemed to have had everything going for him. Where are they now?
@72911RS look up Thornley. He's still making tremendous music and on the verge of reuniting with his old band mates. Mass popularity doesn't seem to be in the cards, but the amazing music continues.
@betbuk thanks for the uploads buk - your channel has become my favourite. Ian hasn't lost any skill with singing or guitar. Good to see some recent youtube videos with Brian on board. When I saw Slash recently, I looked on the net to see Dave was the touring bass player for a short while there, a shame he was replaced. I can only hope he and Forrest make music again with Ian and Brian . Anyway, I think you once sent me this concert on disc, along with other music. Thanks for then, and now. :)
@72911RS Good question. The short answer? Being the best hard rock band to come out after say '95 is dubious timing. No one was listening anymore, and the bands had already been established. At that point if you aren't a critical darling you had better have good management and be think about your business end - Thornley didn't. Why in the world they didn't tour Australia (a rock loving country) or Europe is a damn shame.
@72911RS I agree with you, I am beyond sad that this guy didn't make it. It makes extremely pessimistic about the future of music. In what kind of tone-deaf monster's hands is the music nowadays? :'(
hardly anyone uses effects as "effective" as Big Wreck/Thornley...except maybe Virgos Merlot...YOU either "GET IT" or you don't....685 sound effects could be compared to Led Zepplin and how they layered effects to get that scary movie in a song sound.....this is drama....this is real...and nobody does it better than the modern incarnation....THORNLEY is a genius....open tuned and ALL...
@betbuk I think he's speaking in hyperbole... I don't think he is a fan of either delays, phase shifters, flangers, or even overdrive... God forbid a guitarist to use the tools he has at his disposal!!
Ian just made me want to quit guitar. Or just drop all my friends and family and practice for the rest of my life. WHAT A SOLO! Maybe if we had all bought two copies of "The Pleasure and The Greed" they'd still be around.
I found both their albums at the store recently, being blown away by "In Loving Memory of...", I decided to buy both assuming "The Pleasure and The Greed" would be amazing as well... man was I right! Haha. Not a bad song by Big Wreck. Can't say that for many bands!
@Kegrath Ian Thornley has his own band now called ................you guessed it " Ian Thornley" if you didnt know. And yes I miss this band I went to High school with Dave the bassist and Brian the guitarist.
@Kegrath I felt the same way. I was blown away when I first heard his guitar playing and songwriting over a decade ago. I just had to put the guitar aside for a few months because I was in awe of him. Seeing him live (Big Wreck) was even more impressive. He's a very cool guy too.
I was there when they played with the TSO. IT was sick. Chills down my spine. It was powerful man. Was like a 3 hour show and worth every penny. More actually.
This video was pro shot and posted on Big Wrecks website soon after the show. You were able to watch the whole show! I have been searching for a DVD of this show since! The original song is on BW's 1st CD released in 97, and you can find it on ebay. This was my most memorable concert by far with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Cirque Eloize, Uzume Taiko Drummers and Eric Johnson! Simply AWESOME!
he really is good , this is one of those that you can thank the current recording industry & its ways for not having access to now . Such a shame and just think of the thousands of bands you alson never heard but no shortage of Brittany and all their sisters . This is real talent , should have been pushed ! shame on them
This band was not pushed enough by marketing. I remember I was the only one who knew about them in my area, and I played this cd till it fell apart. Everytime someone heard it they loved it.
Fantastic; I always thought that the slide solos in Big Wreck Songs were done by the other guitarist, Brian. Thornley is the shit, just left me blown. Guitar hero.
Holy s*** people, this is just an example of one of the best modern rock bands that ever played...and got LITTLE TO NO play. I love all of these guys' songs. Excellent, excellent rock - very emotional and driven and just exactly what a 20-something post-grunge bastard like me needs!!!
My favourite song of all time. Ian playing it @ The Mod club was one of the greatest and incredible things that I hold very close to my heart. (It was a B-Day gift :))
I love the fact that he doesn't used a pick :) it's all fingers
