in italy you have to learn english in school, so they should be able to understand english

Well, I don't know if you speak another language apart from English or if you were taught another one at school, but at least in Italy or Spain (which is where I am from) learning a language to the point of being able to follow such a complicated conversation (they speak very quietly in general) takes more than a couple of hours at school, and that's an extra-effort that not everybody has to make. I did, as a personal choice, but I respect those who found it hard for some reason and didn't learn
