Well the Apache is arguably the best Gunship out there. The Mi-24 doesn't count, it's so outdated and the Ka-52 hasn't really proven itself. Plus the apache has variants in service in many countries outside the US, so, it comes to show.

That commitment was never fulfilled. This is also when the US started training them to use US weapons. It was also around this time that the US put the Taliban in a position of power. And Saddam. And Ghaddafi. I am not saying that they are right, or that the US are wrong, just that ya gotta look at the whole picture.
