I love this song. I remember my summer before my first semester at Berklee Jordan and Rod played this at Berklee's "Uchida hall", and it was freak'n awesome. Rod teaches there, so he's there all the time, but as far as I know that was the only time Jordan came to Berklee in the 7 years I lived in Boston. Glad I got to witness it.
Man... I have to say, incredible performance and programing! Amazing. You should cover other DT and JR songs and record it for us. I'm a guitar player and I wish have a keyboard like you here to complete our cover band!
@studiomarand Couple of things: You'd need additional RAM (Takes over 71mb of samples), you'd need all of the ROMS (Contemporary and Orchestral, there are sounds in both) and the other issue is that I used commercial samples; you'd need to own the sample library before I could share it. So there are a few logistical issues there first. Mainly the "illegal" part of me sharing the samples is the issue.
@enigmahack Hi Enigma:) NOW i had all samples(i bought original cd from kurzweil,TAKE FIVE GUITAR ZIMMER,VOCAL SLAPS AND MORE SAMPLES I HAD MORE SAMPLE YOU USED HERE.)and finally i bought all 3 roms .Write me pvt.
So yeah, I have the drum track already, I just didn't have it for this clip but I was thinking about eventually recording it properly but I just haven't had much time. Thanks for the message though!
Man... that's was incredible! I'm from Brazil and in my city I'm put a DT Cover project together. It's been hard to find a great keyboardist to play DT here... I really want that you live here man. Congratulations. I have some DT videos in my channel if you want to wach! Bye
I've just bought the K2500 and I'm about to buy Piano Rom and KDFX!
I can say that is AWESOME even if it's completely empty of any expansion, it doesn't even have sample ram, but in a few days I'm gonna install them!
You know, I play in a band where we cover Dream Theater at the moment and my only nightmare of their sounds is in Fatal Tragedy at 4:10. I just don't understand how it is made.
Are you talking about the staccato section? (Emin section?)
I don't have the song handy, but I know the part you're talking about. The sound is actually pretty easy to make - let me get home after work and I'll PM you with a description on how to make it without the roms :) It's pretty easy!
Mmm, I don't know if here around Milan there are any Kurzweil retailer or what, probably I should give it to my trusted retailer and let him install it.
Well, I think that DMTI and the sampling option this time are useless.
But, tell me, am I wrong or you are the guy that posted a lot of Dream Theater's songs setups on Progsounds?
Well, I know Axiom who runs progsounds, and I used to post sounds (Kurzweil sounds) at an alarming rate... I've slowed down with life in the way, but I still have a bunch of sounds that I program yeah.
I can take requests for people that have Kurzweils, and my programming skills have MASSIVELY increased as of late, so I guess it's something that can be done. I just need a USB 100 Zip drive to transfer the files.
Or a SCSI bay for my laptop. Something like that would work. (But I digress)
Well, I think it depends if you're technical and I think it also depends on the version of motherboard in your Kurzweil... I also used to have the old motherboard in my Kurzweil so there wasn't a dedicated spot to plug KDFX in either. So right now my Kurz has full P-ram, full sample ram, all ROMS, but no Sampling option, no DTMI, and no KDFX.
My suggestion would be to find a Kurzweil retailer and get them to install it for you so if they break your Kurzweil, they have to get it fixed too.
Funny story - I tried installing KDFX about 6 years ago, and I killed my Kurzweil. I had it repaired (Cost like 2000$) and now the internals are all new, but still no KDFX.
So to answer your question - No. There is no KDFX being used here. :)
of course they are perfect because the keyboard that he used to record this song originally is the same one as this one. This song is even a Kurzweil demo for K2500 series
Well Jordan is working for keyboard companies as a sound designer so actually most of these sound might be designed by him. But you're correct about the fact that this guys playing is spectacular!
Thanks for the comments - Just to clarify a little: The keyboard *IS* the same, however the sounds that JR made for this song aren't released by Kurzweil. Over the Edge is a demo, but the sounds don't come included.
Not really - JR made the song for the RPM album and Kurzweil asked if they can use it as a product demo, not the other way around. The song uses a bunch of production samples as well though that, from a copyright standpoint, Kurzweil isn't allowed to release. It's not just as simple as "The sounds should come with the keyboard"
There are something like 22 consecutive setup changes, which are like 100+ sounds... Who would want over 100+ sounds "wasted" for 1 song if they don't like JR's music...
Great to know you're back on the music scene, you always had some crazy chops. Awesome video! Hope to see more videos uploaded soon. You could upload your old ones meanwhile!
Great Job. Not an easy tune by any means. I have a drum video on YouTube of me playing this song. It was filmed on an old video camera. The quality is pretty bad. I should record it on my new camera. but a bit busy these days working on YES tunes. I was in a band with Jordan in the early 80's. He is absolutely amazing!!! Keep up the great playing. Mike
Yeah, it definitely is - The RPM album I refer to in my description is done COMPLETELY with 2 people - JR on the keyboard and Morgenstein on the drums. It's a crazy album for sure.
@enigmahack, where can I find the transcription of this song? Thanks!

Enigma, have you got my mail? I sent one here on youtube and found a mail address on JR forum (hotmail). Thanks in advance for the answer!

An heroic effort! Well done! That's my favourite of all Rudess's recordings. How long did it take you to transcribe all that?

Do you have this version on mp3(without the drums ofcourse)? I would LOVE to play drums to it! amazing job! I airdrummed to the entire song!

Man its great to someone playing real keyboard instead of mindless shredding. Rudess FTW!

Yes, it's in E minor, the part that Rudess plays in chromatic scale, with all the arpeggios in between. Just before Petrucci's solo.
I really don't understand, it seems some strange percussions with some flanger.
However, thanks, you're very gentle!

Damn!
I asked you because i'm going to buy a K2500 and I would like to put the KDFX in, adn expand it as much as i can!
