Wow I loved her! These comedians up there were the real deal! They don't make them like this any longer! What happened to comedicans like this? They don't have to use a cuss word. They just make you laugh with their talent! RIP all of you who have passed away!
excuse me, blood clot. Totie never was afraid of talking about her illnesses in public--in fact she joked about them. One of our best comics--I miss her earthiness, tell it like it is. well, dear Totie, you are up in heaven making Merv, Dean, Lucy laugh :)
Totie--a totally wild, funny--and brave person--played even after they had to amputate her leg (cancer). I still remember her on Merv Griffin show--he adored her.
Actually I don't know...I just realized the comparison when watching this clip. I DO know that divine went for the first time to some kind of party or the prom dressed as Elizabeth Tayor. How RIGHT you are on combining the 2, thanks for the nod!
Totie Fields was such a talented lady. During her show she told jokes but she also sang and had a beautiful emotional voice that was from the heart. Totie was a true orginal we miss you sweetheart! There's a dvd avaliable of one of her last shows it was an HBO special.
I loved this show when I was a kid but now I see the horrible editing. The close-ups of the starts laughing must have all been done at the end of the show. Anyway --- still great to see everybody. Thanks for posting!
Ahh Totie; love & miss ya! Back in the days of actual variety shows, she could usually be seen on on the other, & the roasts - how fun were those ?! She was the precursor to the likes of Rosanne & she always did it so well! As Bob-on-the-road-for-Texaco-Hope would say, Totie, thanks for the memories.....
I love her talent, but SO much of these "roasts" were staged and scripted. The canned laughter, the celebrities pretending they never heard the jokes before...
It made for good entertainment in the 70's, I suppose...
What year was this? I read that Totie's leg was amputated in 1977, and was plagued with health problems the last two years of her life. She died in 1978, at 48. She seemed pretty healthy at this event! BTW...Did she say "fag"? No one laughed like when Kathy Griffin or Lisa Lamponeli says it!
In one of Gene Simmons' first interviews as a member of KISS, Totie Fields told him on TV that he was a probably actually a Jewish kid from New York and that she could tell because "you can't hide the hook".
@burffle I thought that Divine got his inspiration from Elizabeth Taylor? I can see Totie in him though totally! Maybe his drag was Elizabeth and humor Totie? Either way I love all three. Good point!
she said part of her daily regiment to keep her face young and to rid herself of jowels and a turkey neck. it was to take the back of her hand and slap it under her chin over and over again. she said it did nothing for her chin or neck, but it did wonders for her hand.
i just saw that joke is done by totie, on the ed sullivan show, here on youtube. it's under just "totie fields". it can be found on the right side of this page. check it out. she was fantastic...and is still one of my favorites!
Totie was a great personality along with Belle Barth and Pearl Williams.Todie was not as BLUE as the the two ladies I mentioned but highly polished! Thanks so much for sharing! You made my day!
@ladybugsusie1 Back in 1974, she met Gene Simmons from KISS on the Mike Douglas show and she was the only one in the audience who didn't seem to be afraid of him.

These people understood comedy -- no need for cheap laughs from just blurting out bad words for shock value. Brilliance.

I wish I was back in the 1960's and 1970's again. The economy was great, humor was great, and the people were great.

Lisa Lampanelli's a dirty mouthed racist witch. Not terribly funny. She has moments. The rest is just plain nastiness.
sparkle11231 5 months ago
She was great not like that fat slut who shows up at the roasts they put on today and jokes about having sex with black guys.

Is it me, or is Totie Fields the inspiration for The Little Mermaid's chief villain, Ursula the Sea Witch?
LordSolaris 1 year ago
@LordSolaris It was "Divine" that was in the Little Mermaid, but I think that Totie was Divine's inspiration .
