F1.4 was and still is the lens makers peak of performance in a 50mm prime lens.

Higher performance every time compared to F1.8 lenses.

Better construction also, a 'this is the best we can do' lens.

Hm, there is no metric to measure bokeh, right?. Of course it shouldn't be terrible, such as when you see lines out of DoF twice. But otherwise, it's actually a matter of taste. I sometimes wished i had more irregular bokeh for some motives, which usually isn't desireable at all.

As a professional photographer, Ive never had any customers make any comment about the look of out of focus elements in the background. All the recent concerns about the "ultimate Bokeh" is getting ridiculous. I use some older and some newer Leica glass, some Canon glass, Zeiss, Soviet. Most have a certain purpose they are better at . But when it comes down to it, knowledge of what you are doing, your subject, and a happy customer are all that matters.

@064645642 Kai is using a Giottos i believe. I use Manfrotto tripods. Anything that's sturdy with quick release plates should do the trick. Look for something above the 200 dollar mark.

1.8s are generally better than 1.4s, and that is the case with canon 50s, Nikon 50s, and Carl Zeiss 50s.

I think the classic has the edge on Bokeh, but it suffered in this test because it was underexposed compared to the ASPH shots, and it's hazy. I'd like to see more haze post-procced out of the classic images, and the exposures matched.
