Hey man, pretty nice. Here are your final scoring results:
* Clarke Study Quote: I actually chuckled. +1 point for style and comedy
* Lakers Shirt: I'm from Boston, so you get -86 points for for rotting for a team that has Lamar Odom and Ron "peace whatever his name is now", and Kobe "I screwed some crazy chick and got caught" on their roster.
If you had quoted the Clarke Study in F#, and made it fit somehow into your solo, it would have earned you +45.3 points
Whoa! I am no Lakers fan. I am no Celtic fan either.. Hate to bust your bubble on that on.
Wait until I post the Clarke Study Clip. I will play it through all 12 keys while circular breathing. But for now check out what i did on a previous clip. Search on you tube "amazing musician solves" and give me your score!!!
I don't think Duke ment for this song to played in this style. It is a love song. If you know the lyrics it changes your entire mentally towards music.
Nice! Your embouchure and expression remind me of some of the most famous pictures of Brownie :) Nice choice on a modern sound with Satin Doll. And throwing in the Clarke study was a funny touch - great for all the practicing students to hear.
Horn a better horn i played on a jam session with this guy he is playing on a "Martin" the same one that Miles played , when i seen it i was shocked it 's the real deal. Don't let the color of it fool you. Kept it straight Straight Ahead you are the "MAN" TONEMEISTER
it's better to be good on a bad horn, because when you play a good horn, it will be much easier, and this guy seems pretty seasoned in his playing, it's a low quality youtube video, of course it's not gonna sound like he has a perfect tone or pitch the conversion to flash itself brings a lot of sound quality loss, he's pretty damn good
Yeah you play nice but you really need a better horn than that. It's definitely the finish on the horn that is changing your pitch and making you flat and sharp even though you maybe playing it right.
Get a plain colored horn and you wont fall off of pitches so much and slide up and down.
Hahaha that is some funnnny shit. Yeah, the horn is a piece of shit, either an Amati or a new Committee, but the pitch issues (though minimal, really) have to do with his pursposefully unfocused sound concept. Not uncommon. I could ask someone to make a nice horn black though, and you know what I'd have? A nice horn that's black.
Yes sir ! Nice playing and a very attractive instrument. I am amused by people commenting that a certain finish of trumpet will make a player sound better or worse. The player is making the sound not the instrument. And this player and instrument sound and look nice.
Though the player is the main reason for the quality of a tone, the finish does come into play. Raw brass with a clear coat will sound different than a gold finish. So though you are right, so are they...

Trumpets colored that way look cooler, but the tone isn't as good as a plain silver or copper trumpet. It was a little flat of sharp sometimes but still nicely done.Oh, and you need to calm down, your tablature was good but your face looked like you were in pain.
Started out slow, but then you busted out into some great runs and scale work!! At first, I was just impressed with your tone quality, but wasn't sure if you had any technique. Was pleasantly surprised when you started in on the 16ths. Pay no attention to the critics here. When I played in local bands, we would pack the places we played at. One of the best backhanded "compliments" we would get from other bands coming to watch us was: "Man, those guys really suck..."
man i love your trumpet it is beautiful..... mine is some second hand piece of crap.... and love the playing.... i have been playing for 6 years and couldnt even match up to that unless i really worked on it great job
wtf is that ur playing on, its sure as hell not a trumpet. any company that has to color an instrument obviously has another reason to why it wont sell without being colored- playing was good though
Not bad playing man. I like your sound and am impressed with your technique. I loved the Basie "Corner Pocket" quote at the beginning, and the Clarke quote was cool. I would say work on your feel on the head though, it sounds kinda rickety. Also, I think you could use some more melody in your solo instead of so many fast notes. Fast is great, but a little more variety would be really good. Have you taken this tune apart chordally? I think doing that would really help your change playing.
The one I play is a Martin Committee, Large bore with engraved design. It plays fine for me. If you can fine one at a music shop try it out to see if you like it. Amati makes cheaper colored horns.
just wondering but how can you improv that fast? or think of ideas that are that fast? cus i am a freshmen and i have been told i am very good at improving (not saying i am) but cant improv fast haha and i really need help
I improvise fast by practicing everything slow. When I get bored playing it slow I increase the tempo. Try it using a very simple melody. Go slow until you know it well, memorize it, then increase the tempo little by little. Practice, practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more.

this is a very good tip however, keep in mind that improv isn't practiced, and if it is then its not improv at all. its practied music and thats not as fun. otherwise this was very nicely played.
There are things you must practice in order to gain command of your instrument so that you are able to execute and say what you want to say on your instrument. Things you practice become embedded into your subconscience mind. These are the things along with modifications that come out when you improvise. The greater command you have of your instrument makes playing and improv a lot more fun.
Not to seem mean or caustic...but your comments make it seem as if you are not a practitioner of improvised jazz. The truth of the industry is that there is NO successful performance that does not involve preparation. And there are NO real jazz musicians that just make up everything on the spot!
practice 3 hours a day seriously... ask for a megatone mouth pice make sure its the right size for you and ask for a for vince bach mouth pice its so much of a difrence get a better trumpet practice practice practice...
To improve on impov. you first should get familiar with all the Jazz scales...our school has a book set up of all the scales so when is says G7 let's say in an improv section...look at the G7 scale and get familiar with it. This is the what i do when i have a improv solo assigned to me
Ok, He plays a little like Clifford with a nice tone. One of those great trumpet players from Trumpet City - Wilmington, Delaware. I bet he graduated from the same High School as Clifford Brown.
You are correct. I may sound a little like Clifford but I am trying to sound a lot like Tony Smith. I also studied with Boysie Lowery who also taught Clifford.
A very old Besson trumpet 25 bell and an Amati pocket trumpet which I use to practice in my lunch breaks. The valves stick a bit on the pocket model although they sent me a full set when I emailed them. Slight improvement. Don Cherry invented the pocket trumpet in the 50s. Heard him play?
Another great "Don" was Don Ellis. My 10th grade music teacher introduced me to his stuff by playing a trick on me. He asked me to write out one of Ellis's solos on manuscript. Frustrated, I gave up and told the teach I couldn't do it. He said, "I know. It's impossible to copy this solo with a three valve trumpet, because Don Ellis is using FOUR VALVES, stupid!"
I play an old Jerome Callet large bore. That is really all I know about it. Also, own a Bach my Dad had bought new in 1968. It's sweet but too small for my tastes. I just know Martin Committees were the main choice of guys like Chet Baker and Miles Davis. Keep posting those trumpet videos. We need to offset all those meaningless "teeny bopper" videos that make no sense whatsoever.
Great Job. You really have talent. Nice phrasing at the end and I could tell that you could really bop. I would try to not blip the notes on the melody to much. I just want to hear your sound. Are you taking lessons or in college somewhere?
i never knew james earl jones plays the trumpet
