  • i never knew james earl jones plays the trumpet

  • Hey man, pretty nice. Here are your final scoring results:

    * Clarke Study Quote: I actually chuckled. +1 point for style and comedy

    * Lakers Shirt: I'm from Boston, so you get -86 points for for rotting for a team that has Lamar Odom and Ron "peace whatever his name is now", and Kobe "I screwed some crazy chick and got caught" on their roster.

If you had quoted the Clarke Study in F#, and made it fit somehow into your solo, it would have earned you +45.3 points

  • @WhatTheFlyinFudge

Whoa! I am no Lakers fan. I am no Celtic fan either.. Hate to bust your bubble on that on.

Wait until I post the Clarke Study Clip. I will play it through all 12 keys while circular breathing. But for now check out what i did on a previous clip. Search on you tube "amazing musician solves" and give me your score!!!

  • 1:22 CLARKE'S! WOOOH!

  • is that a cecilio trumpet?

  • I don't think Duke ment for this song to played in this style. It is a love song. If you know the lyrics it changes your entire mentally towards music.

  • Stupid guy trying to copy Miles Davis but getting 0% of his tone with his trumpet

  • Hi!Very nice playing and great ideas!!!

Anyway (and maybe i'm mistaking!!) youshould pay more attention to the rythm of your phrases!!Just said because it's one of my main mistakes too!

Anyway really nice!and thanks for sharing your music!bye!

  • Hey! That's your new name! The Tone Smith! Eh? Whatdaya think? Eh? Eh? Eh?

  • Good job Tone Smith!

  • you're good

  • wow nice horn I want one like that but Carolina blue

  • You look very tense!

Try to relax some more, and your tone and flow will improve. I have the same problem myself.

  • haha did hear a little bit of Clarke in there? This is tight.

  • You have a beautiful trumpet, and I thought mine was nice... .. .

  • the grace notes you are playing sound nice at least i think they are grace notes. oh and that is a sexy ass trumpet tht looks nice

  • Haha I like the Clarke study...

This is about as lame as it gets.

  • You would make the Duke proud. Good job Tony!

  • i played trumpet at school, i had two teachers one called gillespie the other called armstrong ! shit u not

  • i hav a red trumpet....... it sucks

  • @spooner1995 The color is the lacquer. It comes in any color, and can be put on any brass, but normally only a clear coat is put on.

  • where did u get a red trumpet dude that is insane.

  • Wack

  • Great job man!

  • amazing :]

  • great tone bro.

  • Love the vid Mr.Smith...this was my former assistant principal

  • exelente¡

  • OK Clarke studies in the middle lol

  • Really great work!! Love that sound.

    Thank you for posting.

    ~ Mitzi DeMarco :-)

  • Sweet finish on that trumpet. Good tone.

  • Nice! Your embouchure and expression remind me of some of the most famous pictures of Brownie :) Nice choice on a modern sound with Satin Doll. And throwing in the Clarke study was a funny touch - great for all the practicing students to hear.

  • what a cool man....lol

  • GREAT JOB!

  • Horn a better horn i played on a jam session with this guy he is playing on a "Martin" the same one that Miles played , when i seen it i was shocked it 's the real deal. Don't let the color of it fool you. Kept it straight Straight Ahead you are the "MAN" TONEMEISTER

  • it's better to be good on a bad horn, because when you play a good horn, it will be much easier, and this guy seems pretty seasoned in his playing, it's a low quality youtube video, of course it's not gonna sound like he has a perfect tone or pitch the conversion to flash itself brings a lot of sound quality loss, he's pretty damn good

  • 1:22 BAHAHAHAHA mannnnn

  • Yeah you play nice but you really need a better horn than that. It's definitely the finish on the horn that is changing your pitch and making you flat and sharp even though you maybe playing it right.

Get a plain colored horn and you wont fall off of pitches so much and slide up and down.

  • Utter Bull

  • Hahaha that is some funnnny shit. Yeah, the horn is a piece of shit, either an Amati or a new Committee, but the pitch issues (though minimal, really) have to do with his pursposefully unfocused sound concept. Not uncommon. I could ask someone to make a nice horn black though, and you know what I'd have? A nice horn that's black.

  • actually its not. if you get a dull colored horn it will play better.

  • Get one with tight valves, OK, color is for the cameras.

  • Various metals have slightly different tonal responses and timbres. Renold Schilke did a study on it.

  • Haha I liked the Clark study quote in your improv, nice insert.

  • Yes sir ! Nice playing and a very attractive instrument. I am amused by people commenting that a certain finish of trumpet will make a player sound better or worse. The player is making the sound not the instrument. And this player and instrument sound and look nice.

  • Though the player is the main reason for the quality of a tone, the finish does come into play. Raw brass with a clear coat will sound different than a gold finish. So though you are right, so are they...

  • it looks like you were sitting on the toilet while you played this. taking a crap and getting blown at the same time. 8==D D=

  • wow nice trumpet!

im getting a silver one for my birthday...so yeah

  • Started out slow, but then you busted out into some great runs and scale work!! At first, I was just impressed with your tone quality, but wasn't sure if you had any technique. Was pleasantly surprised when you started in on the 16ths. Pay no attention to the critics here. When I played in local bands, we would pack the places we played at. One of the best backhanded "compliments" we would get from other bands coming to watch us was: "Man, those guys really suck..."

  • OH! you copied someone at 1:36 i cant remember whos solo it was but i have it on my ipod! i think its dizzy, nice job anyways!

  • its flat but it goes with the jazzy tone

  • i like the fast improv work on this piece, nice color scheme on the trumpet too.

  • man i love your trumpet it is beautiful..... mine is some second hand piece of crap.... and love the playing.... i have been playing for 6 years and couldnt even match up to that unless i really worked on it great job

  • wtf is that ur playing on, its sure as hell not a trumpet. any company that has to color an instrument obviously has another reason to why it wont sell without being colored- playing was good though

  • But it looks cool tho...

  • @blue67joey You are an idiot.

  • Not bad playing man. I like your sound and am impressed with your technique. I loved the Basie "Corner Pocket" quote at the beginning, and the Clarke quote was cool. I would say work on your feel on the head though, it sounds kinda rickety. Also, I think you could use some more melody in your solo instead of so many fast notes. Fast is great, but a little more variety would be really good. Have you taken this tune apart chordally? I think doing that would really help your change playing.

  • Thanks for your comments. Do you play?

  • sick ass trumpet

  • i like how he played the clarke study in the middle of his solo haha

  • yeah lol

  • just checked them out sure looks the same as the ones on ebay if so how does it play?

  • The one I play is a Martin Committee, Large bore with engraved design. It plays fine for me. If you can fine one at a music shop try it out to see if you like it. Amati makes cheaper colored horns.

  • nice stuff, I see these colored cheaper trumpets on ebay is the one your playing one of those or just a more expensive trumpet red laquered?

  • THAt TRumPEts FUkin Tight I LIKe the coLOr

  • all of you are idiots

  • just wondering but how can you improv that fast? or think of ideas that are that fast? cus i am a freshmen and i have been told i am very good at improving (not saying i am) but cant improv fast haha and i really need help

  • I improvise fast by practicing everything slow. When I get bored playing it slow I increase the tempo. Try it using a very simple melody. Go slow until you know it well, memorize it, then increase the tempo little by little. Practice, practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more.

  • There are things you must practice in order to gain command of your instrument so that you are able to execute and say what you want to say on your instrument. Things you practice become embedded into your subconscience mind. These are the things along with modifications that come out when you improvise. The greater command you have of your instrument makes playing and improv a lot more fun.

  • Not to seem mean or caustic...but your comments make it seem as if you are not a practitioner of improvised jazz. The truth of the industry is that there is NO successful performance that does not involve preparation. And there are NO real jazz musicians that just make up everything on the spot!

  • practice 3 hours a day seriously... ask for a megatone mouth pice make sure its the right size for you and ask for a for vince bach mouth pice its so much of a difrence get a better trumpet practice practice practice...

  • To improve on impov. you first should get familiar with all the Jazz scales...our school has a book set up of all the scales so when is says G7 let's say in an improv section...look at the G7 scale and get familiar with it. This is the what i do when i have a improv solo assigned to me

  • Yeah, baby! Way to blow "Satin Doll" on the horn, Tony!!! Very nice, man!!! Some very nice licks!!!

  • Very nice!

  • I loved the clarke exersisce that was in the middle :D

Great tone, and you are a realy good player ;)

  • Ok, He plays a little like Clifford with a nice tone. One of those great trumpet players from Trumpet City - Wilmington, Delaware. I bet he graduated from the same High School as Clifford Brown.

  • You are correct. I may sound a little like Clifford but I am trying to sound a lot like Tony Smith. I also studied with Boysie Lowery who also taught Clifford.

  • yeah!!!!!

  • Congratulations man!!!nice sound from a good player and excelent trumpet!!!Martin Committe is the trumpet of my dreams!!!Good luck!!!

  • Thanks, Louis. I love my Martin Committee!! I hear the older models play a lot better than the newer ones. Can't wait to try an older model!

  • Nice licks. You played a little Herbert L. Clarke in there and it fit nicely.

  • Haha, I heard that too. You're right, it does fit, though!

    I enjoyed that!

  • A very old Besson trumpet 25 bell and an Amati pocket trumpet which I use to practice in my lunch breaks. The valves stick a bit on the pocket model although they sent me a full set when I emailed them. Slight improvement. Don Cherry invented the pocket trumpet in the 50s. Heard him play?

  • Yes, yes, yes...Don Cherry is a very interesting player.

  • Another great "Don" was Don Ellis. My 10th grade music teacher introduced me to his stuff by playing a trick on me. He asked me to write out one of Ellis's solos on manuscript. Frustrated, I gave up and told the teach I couldn't do it. He said, "I know. It's impossible to copy this solo with a three valve trumpet, because Don Ellis is using FOUR VALVES, stupid!"

  • Good strong playing, Tony but that doesn't look like a very good trumpet you've got there. What is it?

  • The horn is a Martin Committee large bore model .465.

I also play a large bore Bach Strad with a 25 bell. What horns do you use.

  • Haha. That horn definitely does not suck! I wish I had a Martin Committe large bore!

  • Sounds like you know horns. What horn do you use.

  • I play an old Jerome Callet large bore. That is really all I know about it. Also, own a Bach my Dad had bought new in 1968. It's sweet but too small for my tastes. I just know Martin Committees were the main choice of guys like Chet Baker and Miles Davis. Keep posting those trumpet videos. We need to offset all those meaningless "teeny bopper" videos that make no sense whatsoever.

  • Great Job. You really have talent. Nice phrasing at the end and I could tell that you could really bop. I would try to not blip the notes on the melody to much. I just want to hear your sound. Are you taking lessons or in college somewhere?

  • I am a retired high school vice principal. Not studying with anyone yet. Just getting back on the horn now that I have the time.
