  • The first version of this song was found in 1635 so it's up to you if some1 is leaving, dying, wants his last drink?

  • waking ned.

  • ps,if you want to hear a song with full depth of soul, listen to the Pogues doing USA.Its here in the tube.

  • The great thing about Shane's singing is that it is done from the bottom of his soul. Others just sing, even if it IS with feeling. It's not got the depth that Shane has,and he doesnt even have to try.

  • @ChimeraAZ bang on! :)

  • @ChimeraAZ Love that comment . I've always said he has the truest voice in popular music

  • Great song and will always be remembered as a Liam Clancy song

  • my dad always said that irish songs are either about death, love or fishing and it's fucking true haha.

  • @rea5sass Forgot drinking.

  • Great song

  • Its not a sad song. Its a drunk man whos supposed to be singing. He only wants one more drink before the night it out

  • it's a song . it's great. who cares where the fuck it came from.!

  • 8 people's sweethearts don't wish them one more day to stay

  • I am absolutely, positively in love with Irish music. I don't like these kind of bands that sound completely drunk when they record, I don't believe it shows talent. I'm entitled to my opinion, but if you want to see a tear-jerker version of this go watch The High Kings version of this, it is a million times better.

  • @jedicrap118 The Pogues performed a lot drunk the Dubliners are still the best

  • @jedicrap118 The High Kings version is definitely very mellifluous, but it doesn't have Shane's desperate bittersweet heart. That's fine of course, it's just a different, more ordered style.

  • @jedicrap118 You're a goon.

  • this song has such a great atmosphere. I was at the Falmouth shanty festival this year and on the last night everyone crowded into the pub and sang their hearts out. I didn't know too many of them but I bloody recognised this one! x

  • thanks lads for a song for me amigos that are on the run or on the other side

  • great song, enjoy Shane while you can, he is not destined to be with us for a long time, he will probably self destruct sooner than later.

  • ....................ew

  • @jck1794 loser

  • @methical21 I love the song, but these guys destroyed it in my opinion, sorry.

  • @jck1794 LIam Clancy did it best of all the versions I have heard

  • @gabornadele Bobby Clancy's son is in The High Kings, have you heard of them?

  • @peetsi aw go on, dont ferget the manx, the cornish, the basque, and mebbie the newfoundlanders and more than a few floridians

  • very good very very very good :)

  • good wee fuckers!

  • @LikeOski1989 FYI, I'm Catholic, but I converted Catholism as an adult. I was actually raised Protestant (Episcopal in the US or Church of England) but my parents joined the Episcopal church as adults. They were both raised Southern Baptist.

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I missed your message. Thanks, Cindy

  • From my experience as an American living in Dublin, Americans could with a bit more education on Irish and British politics and history before claiming to "be" from these isles or opening their mouths on stuff they know nothing about, while Brits and Irish could be a bit less condescending and snotty when confronted with people who think Britain and Ireland are pretty damn cool. That garbage goes both ways.

One of my favorite songs ever.

  • Have just done a St Patrick's Night...Just enjoy the music

  • Kindly shut the fuck up arguing and just enjoy the song

  • @InfantryChans91 ABSOFUCKING LUTELY!

  • You lot are really missing the point - it's a great song - sung well but different as only the pogues can. Me, I prefer the wailn jennys version which is just the business.

    Enjoy.

  • @LikeOski1989 You missed the first part of my message. I'm a right mongrel. I'm just a junk yard dog that knows a bit about my ancestry. The thing is, all of my father's family not only look irish, but they PLAY bluegrass, which is descended from the music of Ireland. ( maybe Scotland, too, but, I digress). I'm not part of the Irish culture, but I see that culture when I remember the face of my father, my uncles and my cousins. I hear their music when I listen to the music of Ireland.

  • @LikeOski1989 Oh, but that is the joy of being an American! In America, we mongrels can claim all of our origins. Me? I'm English, Irish Scottish, German and Cherokee, in pretty much that order. Of course, I'm only 1/32 Cherokee and 1/8 German, being mostly from the British Isles, but hey, I can prove I'm descended from all and I claim 'em all!

  • @cindydintn You're a yank. Face it. You're not irish, scottish. Stop trying to claim other countries as your nationality.

  • @peacefrog1916 Being American doesn't give most Americans a sense of identity, hence our unnatural attachment to our distant ancestors. It's depressing to not feel any of that connection-- all my ancestors were on this continent before 1800, but even I don't feel like being "American" means anything at all. We're almost all the children of invaders here, and that's OUR history and culture that makes Americans say the stuff we do.

  • @kiette - An interesting idea here, but one I'm sure that you'll find lots of folks disagree with as far as an "American"identity goes. The invaders observation is a bit of recentist malarkey. There is not a square centimeter of land on earth that has not been repeatedly invaded, conquered, and dominated by a non-indigenous group. The pre-Columbian western hemisphere was no exception: NA groups fought and dominated each other with the same abandon that Euro folks later inflicted on them.

  • @peacefrog1916 Please see my comments above. I never claimed to be anything but a vast mixture of cultures. But for whatever reason, Irish came to the forefront in my father's family's genetics. My dad looked to be "black Irish". I, however, look like I'm German. Sigh. Still, when I look at Irish bands, I see what looks like my relatives, now long dead. It gives me great joy to hear them sing and remember the music we used to make when I was a child.

  • @cindydintn which is great...that's why you cannot be nationalist like most Europeans are

  • The absolute best version of this song. The Pogues were so talented. The only bad thing about this song is that it's too short!

  • This is sure different from the version I'm familiar with! It's nice to hear another version. If you haven't heard the one by The Wailin' Jennys, I recommend it. =)

  • The parting gas:

    ----------------------

    My girlfriend left me broken-hearted,

she left, because I always farted,

so here I wait for time to pass,

in a cloud of parting gas.

  • I love the Pogues and I think this is my favourite version of this song

  • Where's the Sinead O'Connor version. It's way better.

BTW Shut up you potty mouths.

  • borrowed by the scots for sure. god save the tri

  • its celtic....thank god it aint english...that would ruin it. of which the pogues do a great job of mucking it up despite being irish.

  • @rainbowchakra90 is that a back handed compliment from an englishman?

  • @Frankieireland lol. No, actually I'm a Scotch-Irish-American. It was intended to be more of a why are we arguing over whether this song is Scottish or Irish when it doesn't matter. Also, to take a jab at the English for repressing so much of the world for centuries; e.g. Ireland, Scotland, India, Africa, The Americas... See where I'm going with this?

  • best version of this song. sends chills down my back, thats how awesome it is

  • @lexicondevilfilms ...nah mate, the shaun davey version is by far the best version of this song

  • I'm a huge Pogues fan but never liked this particularly. They did a lot of covers and gave them their own unique sound, but the originals were oftentimes better IMO. Anyway the Pogues are a live band, thats where they come into their own.

  • @fh041205 Sorry but I can't agree with that. The Pogues versions of " Dirty old town" and " ..waltzing Mtilda " are definitive. " I'm a man you don't meet.." is incomparable. Shane's reading of " The auld triangle " is superb. " Kitty " I haven't heard by anyone else but I don't have to. The version of " Danny boy " on the box-set is my favourite version of this song. I'd be curious as to which originals you think are better than the Pogues versions. I defy anyone to better " The Irish rover ".

  • @SuperDsweeney I'd have to agree with most of what you've said. I love anything and everthing the pogues put their stamp on, I just loved their sound. A few that weren't better than originally would be, Whiskey you're the devil, Muirshin Duirkin, Leaving Of Liverpool, The Wild Rover. It must be said however that these songs take on a different dimension in the live shows, but the album versions weren't very impressive. I stll listen to them though!!!

  • @SuperDsweeney couldnt agree more

  • There is no Scotland, there is no Ireland, there is only the Celtic World. From Portugal to Orkney, we are one!

  • Liam Clancy's is way better

  • Love this song ! the lyrics are so damn true .

  • CHEERS fuckin best song ever written ehoever wrote this/// easly..god bless bullshit err thank fuck fer this eh ... ive no faith in anythig greater than ones self eh ahhh hahahhaa

  • @bigbabyjesusaddf Drink another one.

  • go mc gowan...pure celtic soul

  • BRILLIANT

  • this song was originally produced by the clancys and tommy makem .. brilliant ...

  • Great cover of a classic immigration song. Sounds as if it was sung by someone on the docks at Queenstown, saying farewell to Ireland.

  • great DRINKING song rotb

  • waillin jennys is better

  • i second that

  • this will be played when im dead..this and i got stoned and i missed it by dr hook hahahaha

  • only version is the voice squad... great IRISH song

  • great scottish song you mean

  • Actually its considered to be both Irish and Scottish, man fuck the arguing, the fact remains its Celtic and is shared between the Scots and the Irish.

  • @Notides360 interesting that the original said the opposite-namely that both his friends AND enemies now hated him -written the night before his execution -songs change through the centuries

  • @Notides360 and the welsh

  • @Notides360 You lot are really missing the point - it's a great song - sung well but different as only the pogues can. Me, I prefer the wailn jennys version which is just the business.

    Enjoy.

  • @Notides360 and the welsh. but no need to go into it

  • @Notides360 Spot on brother. Too many keyboard warriors on youtube

  • wev claimed it now na na na na na!

  • What? Scottish? I can only assume thats a joke?

  • no it's not a joke.

  • im irish its true but the irisr have made songs from other countries their own, scottish songs akso include black is the colour and for some reason will ya go lassie go, all lovely songs, celtic singers seem to convey the meaning and feeling of the songs. dougie maclean one of the best of those along with luke kelly, noel nagel(i think, it's him that sings joe mc donnell) ronnie drew.

  • @definitlynotgay

Will you go lassie go is an Irish Song. It comes from the Glens of Antrim by the McPeaks. Admittedly, there are definately strong elements of Scottish Folk in its Rhythms & Rhymes. This is to be expected, as Antrim is about 40 Miles from Western Scotland...Irish Folk does take many influences on board, and makes them her own. I think thats a very good thing, it keeps us all together a little bit on these fragmented Islands...

  • eh !!!! since when were the pogues or this song scottish ??????????

  • It was written in Scotland of course.

  • Great Scottish song.

  • What can i say ! Shane is a legend !

  • hope warner doesn't own the rights for this tune the pieces of shite

  • @jim1649 Don't worry mate. Warner is huge... but they will never fuck with Shane. And I don't blame 'em.

  • happy st paddys shane, hope ya get fooked!

  • this is the 2 best version Shuan daveys is the best

  • Nah, Shaun Daveys not even close. Liam Clancy's was best, Pogues maybe second, Dubliners third. For Shaun Davies, see page 85.

  • i second that

  • Shaun's is good, but I like the melody of this one.

  • Agreed Liams is the best! Then The Pogues!!!

  • Fuck that!! This version is much better than Davey's version!!!!

  • nah i agree with you

i heard it in the parting glass and i really like the feel that his gives off

    though the pogues are classic

  • This song brings back so many great memories of the eigties when I used to go to Pogues gigs on a regular basis with my mates. It is much better live but then so were the Pogues in general. Hail Hail
