I was working for a Safety magazine a few years ago (before Deadliest Catch) and was interviewing a crab boat captain about safety on his ship. He was going on about safety precautions and training and trust, etc., and sounded like he knew what he was talking about, so then I asked "if you're so good about safety, how come your industry has more deaths and injuries than any others?" And he looked at me and said "well, the Bering Sea just doesn't like people very much." Good answer.
i just watched a show on tv last night .... They stay out in sea for about 5 days mostly working none stop throwing in up to 100 crab cages, after the five days it a race back to the loading docks before the crabs die off. The Wage/Money is pretty good with each person getting around $16,000 to $20,000 each .... Not bad for 5 days of work.
carebreve is no crab fisherman, he doesn't even know the word "greenhorns", he called them green hands, what a fake, loser has probably never been in water deeper than his bathtub. If anyone wants to talk to a real Alaskan crab fisherman, i'm right here.
the f/v north sea lucked out in 2004.. they were finished harvesting before the M/V Selendang ayu crashed and continues to spill toxic foamed soybeans ( 130million pounds) that ruined first year of "crab ratz"...if you know of "crab ratz?
My uncle is a skipper on a crab boat in Alaska. Since he and his wife have no children, i am the one that he takes when a season begins even though i am a girl. I work mostly on bringing the Pots up and unloading them. I have doing stuff like this with him since i was 13 and i am now 19. Its a hard job but im not complaining when i get about $14,000-$24,000 depending on each season
I've been a crabber for 13+yrs, I have broke my hand,4 ribs, foot, fractured my hip, tibia, and and my wrist, I have a scar form being stabbed by a wire hanging on the pot in my stomach, scars from numerous other things, This job is Dangerous, but mostly mentally stressful for the green hands! It will break a grown man down as soon as 1 day. I have see men cry to get off the boat! these videos aren't bad..But when the weather turns, and gets stormy, people Die, but you still work through that!
I salute you guys for doing the most dangerous job in america, because with out you guys, I would not be able to have my delicous king krab dinner. THANK YOU!
on the new episode tonight there one of the boats sunk fishing for king crab (not one of the main boats on deadliest catch) and they have only found one guy so far out of four that abandoned ship, also the coast guard found the life raft EMPTY.
the 2005 winner on the bering sea is the northwestern my favorit boat and maverick hmm and the others boat billikin, lady alaska, big valley and others and the big valley going under 2005 6persons are dead 1 survive got stay with him
sad eh. if i remember right an alaskan ship that joined the search found a guy floating in the water with a life suite but he was already dead.. sig hansons words were, this is a sad sad day,i could not have describe it any better
just remember Discovery Channel is showing you about a half dozen boats in a fleet that had over 250 boats in it. i would say the two best boats are the F/V Arctic Sea and the F/V Pinnacle.
wow i want to catch big crabs but to bad here in the bay u dont get dat alot..we only can catch rocks crabs here and theres dungeons crabs too but thats a big ass fine around 1000 dollars a crab..but yea man have fun catchin them big ass crabs
fook me m8 u actually do that shit!!, if so i love that program, and i take my hat off to all u guys, very brave ppl indeed, i would give it a go but i get seasick!! lol
i might be fine on the boat because im on them all the time in Nova Scotia.. it would be most the 5 days with hardly any sleep that would get me,and the cold.lol
Thanks for clarifying, vegastud. I was wondering why so many would go through so much for so little. I still think $22k isn't enough for what you guys go through, but you're out there, not I, so you know better.
sounds like u had a good season and you got lots of comments too!! who was skippering? o, i forgot , i wouldn't know 'em cause the boat was sold to an alaskan corp. hope you get lots more!!

AABINVESTIGATIONS 3 years ago
actually mr smart guy...it has toped the list for over 10 years..every week atleast 5 crab fishermen are either lost or dead.
The12GAme 3 years ago

btw, lost or dead???? do they find the lost ones??
AABINVESTIGATIONS 3 years ago
and more than 5 pilots die per week, do you want me to list more for you?
AABINVESTIGATIONS 3 years ago

at least one person dies a week into this work, although it is more dangerous is being police in L.A

Only $22,000 for 92,000 lbs? Here in the US king crab sells for about $10 per pound...
redbeast2 5 years ago
let me explain, that is 92,000lbs @ $4.80 per lb. = $441,000. i get 5% of the 441K. which makes me $22,000.
vegastud2001 5 years ago
Oh I see, I thought you meant $22,000 for the whole crew, ship costs & everything coming out of that.
redbeast2 5 years ago
