Thanks for sharing your wife's story. Smoking cigarettes seems to be steeped in rituals for lots of people.

My wife smokes from time to time. At one time she was a "regular" smoker, every day up to a maximum of 10 per day. Now she smokes from time to time and she likes to smoke at night in bed. She did this when she was young, in her teens. She would sneak a cigarette in her room at night before sleeping, out of sight of her parents. Now when she smokes, she says her cigarette at night is a "ritual", associated with the act. She has to be careful to avoid the ritual becoming an addiction again.
