I like this song a lot as it bares a very striking similarity to a number of years I spent with an ex-girlfriend who essentially became my bestfriend. But I can't help but notice that this song definitely does refer to the likes of an ended relationship. Quite simply the revisiting of the past throughout the song as well as the line, "There's nothing like you and I, so why do I even try?" tells me that its bittersweet. Just an obversation.
