  • One of the most underrated performers....and here she was stunning singing one Broadway's greatest ballads and probably Schwartz's best composition.

  • Meadowlark is one of the very best "story songs" ever written for the theater. Depending on the day or clip you hear, either could be "the best" LuPone for the sheer power (imagine her singing this close to 40 years ago -- get the OBCR). Liz for the beautiful way she tells the story, her phrasing/timing and that crystal clear vocal tone, quality and effortless range (I should say effortless appearing -- she's working hard!). Then toss in Betty Buckley or Audra McDonald and you have a real race

  • you tube Brooke Solan 14 year old sings meadowlark amazingly

  • Stephen Schwartz's most gorgeous song. Liz Callaway's rendition makes it even more gorgeous.

  • Gorgeous rendition. Keep singing, Liz. What a gift!

  • Her voice makes the perfect princess.

  • This is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard...

  • Anyone who has a copy of the complete Carnegie Hall concert please PM me for trades. ;)

  • She should be a lot more popular. her voice makes me melt!

  • well i just saw Anastacia now, and I had to know who was the singer with that wonderfull and beautifull voice!! I found her!!! Great voice!!

  • i am in love with this song. i feel like i make up about half of the views on this video...

  • I love how she almost speaks the song rather than full-out singing it. it makes it feel so much more personal and emotional.

  • It's amazing how much personality she has in her voice. Her singing is never boring, very enjoyable :)

  • She sings Far longer than forever beautifully, I love her as Odette from the Swan Princess.

  • Ms. Lupone has been dethroned. This is the best version of this song I have ever heard. It is simply magnificent. Kudos to Liz, her beautiful voice and her performance of this song!!

  • She sings this song with such a story.... her voice is magnificent.

  • What an absolutely exquisite instrument she has. So many colors in this voice--but never forced, moving effortlessly through some very difficult registers. Absolutely caresses the lyric. I was lucky enough to see her do this live.

  • This really is my favorite version of this song. She really has beautiful presentation of the song that is easy to listen to and has just the right amount of vocal acting. Not like other performances of this song in which pitch and vocal quality is sacrificed for over acting.

  • Sarah Brightman and Susan Egan sing good versions as well.

  • THE BEST!!!!

  • Anastasia!!

  • I first heard this song sung by Lupone in Chicago. She was the standard, by which I judged other versions. I've gotta say, this one really holds up for me. She's solidly in control of the song throughout. I like the performance by Ripley, too. It moved me to see what was happening to the singer/actor as she used the story of the lark to justify her leaving. Liz moves us with the imagery of the song and the sheer beauty of the voice. they're doing two different things, these ladies--and well!

  • @bluejupiter100 Where can I find a video of Alice Ripley singing this? I can't find it anywhere!!! :/

  • I adore her voice, and her, but I don't like the jazzy orchestra arrangement.

  • Her voice is so smooth, and relaxed. No strained feeling. I really enjoy listening to her singing. Beautiful!!!

  • She REALLY can sing.

    Ela REALMENTE pode cantar.

    Ella realmente puede cantar.

  • simply fantastic.

  • Icowles- Liz is FAR from 90...are you thinking of Barbara Cook?

  • @jimwnyc no no...lcowles meant that WHEN Liz Callaway is 90 she'll still sound 17.

  • Liz Callaway will be 90 and still sound like she's 17. Crystal clear and beautiful. The amazing this about this song is that it's so well constructed and gorgeously written that women with VERY different voices and interpretations can sing it and all sound great. Patti LuPone, Liz and even Sara Brightman couldn't be more different vocally, but they all have fantastic renditions of this song. It's speaks to the power of excellent songwriting as well as singing.

  • voice of disney!!

  • Amazing voice... even more amazing orchestra. Wow! Give me chills.

  • Liz Callaways voice is the most glorious thing in the world!

  • Comment removed

  • I don't see how there can even be debate over which rendition is the best. Patti Lupone sings out of her nose, Eden Espinosa sings out of her Throat. Liz Callaway sings out of her heart.

  • GORGEOUS.....love the soft way she told the story of the Meadowlark.... she is unique....

  • Love her interpretation. of Meadownlark..Liz is in a class of her own, soft and subtle and lovely....hope to see her at the Met in the Fall....

  • Liiz rules!! She created a new genre...i.e. the sung narrative....

Wonderful....a true artist and theater diva is our Liz....

  • she is amazing. just amazing.

  • Love it!

Her gorgeous voice creates a fabulous narrative...great song performed by a true artist....

  • I love her voice!

  • Even though she's a big star performing in a huge space, there's something so down to earth and intimate about the way she sings this song.

  • I love Liz she is simple amazing and a joy to watch

  • Liz Callaway is the bomb!!!! omg soooo amazing

  • omg she is awesome!

  • i can't believe see did the singing voices for Anastasia, Odette, Adult Kiara, and Princess Jasmine in the 2nd and 3rd Aladdin

  • I am obsessed with her "come a-looooooooooooong"

    GORGEOUS vibrato!

  • I love her voice :) what other songs has she sung?

    xx

  • Bless this Lovely Singer ! This is just the right way to approach the material. Well acted and an exciting mix voice with just enough belt, but none of the screeching and yelling that some of the other girls choose.

  • She is fabulous!

  • saw her this weekend!!! wow, what an AMAZING singer!!

  • Sublime....sublime.

  • truely loving timber and connection with song. I believe her.

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE

  • Thank you so much for posting this! I just love her voice! And this song is just so wonderful!

  • she was the judge at Grand River National Show Choir Invitational in which my high schools show choir competed in! so we all met her, and she was the soloist competition judge so i got to sing for her! :)

  • THE SWAN PRINCESS!! Amazing

  • she sounds like lea salonga at times

  • Liz's voice is the sweetest I've ever heard.

    Yes, Liz!

"My Heart Is So Full of You" is my favorite LC track.

    Thanks, vlirio, for posting this!

  • hmmmm.... when i close my eyes im seeing Odette, Anastasia, Jasmine, and Kiara...haha

  • By far the best rendition. Listen to Liz's recording. It makes me think I'm listening to a faerie tale.

  • best one. Patti LuPone's is super flat.

  • So. Beautiful. This is wonderful, truly gorgeous beyond words.

  • growing up, we had a CD of her and her sister. Every time i heard this song i would cry, and it still gets me!! I love this song!!

  • I loved her in Anastasia when she sang once upon a december

  • Thanks for posting! I love Stephen Schwartz and Liz Callaway! Such great artists! :-)

  • beautiful!

  • ah. Beautiful!

  • I really love the gentle, romantic way Liz Callaway sings. However, I really think the other two popular version of this song (Patti LuPone and Alice Ripley) have their merits, too. Patti LuPone's concert versions are so forceful and fiery. Alice Ripley really acts and embodies the character in her performance of The Baker's Wife.

I think it's a testament to the songwriting that these singers can transform the song into their own pieces. It's just a tremendous song!!

  • @becausetheymoo Check out the one on my page. The talented vocalist really gives Liz and Patti a run for their money,

  • Of all the versions I saw now this was the first and the best. Beautiful voice Liz Callaway, I am glad I grew up to Disney songs of the 90s and discovered her heavenly voice. And yes I literally cried in the meadowlark park where she dies :(

  • brilliant

  • I saw her do this on a tour with Stephen Schwartz and he said she did his favorite version of this song-And I agree!

  • Liz is amazing. So emotional and powerful. :)

  • she has the ideal ultimate "princess" singing voice. *.*

  • Now THIS is how the song is sung, Ms. Ripley. Heaven.

  • A-men!!! i mean Alice Ripley is a RIDICULOUS actress, but she cannot hold a candle to the talent that is Liz Callaway.

i didn't want this to end. this was exquisite.

  • I'm obsessed with her voice! I love it!

  • me too....I got to meet liz once (nicest person you could ever meet) after a concert she was guest starred in with david web and paul williams.

  • Ahhhh! love this!

  • this was during lea salonga's concert at carnegie hall, 2005. liz was lea's special guest. they are good friends, and they actually sound alike, both have this crystal-clear voice.

  • Wow, that is an AWESOME performance of a great song.

  • wow..I absolutely love this song, and this was AMAZING..such a difficult song to sing and she did it flawlessly..just beautiful.

  • she is jasmine

    in aladdin

  • not in the first movie. in the sequels she is (:

  • yeah in the sequels

but the original singing voice of Jasmine was Lea Saleonga

  • No, that's Lea Salonga.

  • If ever a performance deserved a standing ovation, it was that! What was up with that audience? Apart from 2 or 3 people, they remained resolutely seated. This is SO classy ... the best version EVER of "Meadowlark" ... Liz rules! :-)

  • liz callaway is awesome with this song, though i have to say i have heard her do a better version of it, she fluffsone of the notes here in, i think, the penultimum chorus, but this song is soo damm awesome, i love the story it tells! makes me cry at times lol

  • glorious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ok... I'm sorry Patti, but this is just TOO beautiful. Patti is my idol, but Liz is just as good in this song! I think she reflects the real emotion of the song better, but when Patti sings it, it feels like it was written specifically for her... I don't know which rendition I like better

  • @leciga28

I agree - Patti is all brass... and even when she pulls in the reins, it still isn't pure beauty... Liz is clear and beautiful and brassy too!

  • Wonderful performance. What is this song about in relation to "The Baker's Wife"?

  • she is at a crossroads because she is married to an older baker and this young man and her have fallen in love. she is thinking about what she should do and she realizes that she has to be the meadowlark that she remembers from a story she was told as a child

  • BEYOND EXQUISITE. Patti LuPone must have put a hit on the person who put this on You Tube. He he.

  • This is potentially the funniest comment I've ever read.

  • it's so weird because the first time i heard this i liked it buti didnt love it because i was so used to hearing it in a french accent but as i listen to this again and again she just gets better and better. her voice has never gotten boring.

    ur AMAZING LIZ!!!!

  • omigod she is sooo good

y? y is everyone more amazing than me

    lol

no but she is sooo good!!!

  • she owns this song

  • I'm so jealous of her voice, shes amazing.

  • favorite rendition.

  • shes amazing!!!!! i love her and her sis Ann

  • wow..if Alice Ripley leaves Next to Normal , Liz Callaway HAS to replace her!

  • Wow, Everytime i hear this i think of Anastasia. <3

  • She doesn't breathe she gasps for air

  • I LOVE THIS!!!!! Amazing. xx

  • every time i hear her sing i think of jasmine, kiara, anastasia, and odette :D

  • she's also MULAN!!!

  • no lea salonga sings mulan :)

  • she was my mother's voice teacher

  • It's True!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Amazing S'Wonderful!!!!!!!!!

  • I can feel all her emotions... Loved it!!!

  • ohmygawd. Best voice i have ever heard in my entire life.

  • I have to say that Liz Callaway's rendition of "Meadowlark" is, by far, my absolute favorite. Her voice is gorgeous and she captures the song perfectly. Listen to the studio version on "The Story Goes On: Liz Callaway On & Off Broadway"--it's breathtaking.

  • yeah, i've heard a lot of people singing 'meadowlark', and she's the best. she has such an amazingly beautiful voice!

  • я люблю этот голос!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • woah.

I don't know what else to say.

    so good

  • wow perfect pitch

  • voice of an angel

  • look like patti lupone much?

  • This is simply amazing

  • Is this when she guested in Lea Salonga's Carnegie Hall Concert?

  • pure JOY!!! I will always be a fan!!!

I'd love to see her in a show NOW!!!

  • fantastic singing! Brava, Liz! She is a storyteller with her singing voice.

  • I love her voice. It's like sparkling fountain water, but that's still just an analogy.

  • OMG she has a long range! She can sing low notes like an alto and then hit a high note like a soprano

  • by far one of the best versions of this song I've heard! she hits the notes so gracefully, and doesn't sound like she's straining at all!

  • I love this song, and I LOVE her rendition of it. :)

  • I love Liz Callaway's voice. So bright and clear. So many colors. LOVE. HER.

  • She is just stunning! I heard her live once and I almost died of amazement.

  • Her breath control is AMAZING.

  • I know that's what I think!

  • Bette Buckley does a great version

  • Yes, she does!

  • sounds just like jodi benson!

  • The text below is a reply to "athespiangirl" (she wanted to know what key the song was in but for some reason, my reply didn't link up to her posting)

While I was on, I took another look at this fantastic performance. It looks as though it was shot professionally. so does it come from a commercial DVD release? If so, I'd love to add it to my collection ... any ideas?

  • Amazing woman! She's like an angel!

  • Liz is amazing, patti is the first version i heard of this sond but liz is amazing, but so is alice, all amazing women with a very diffrent voice. thanks to all of them

  • this is possibly the best version of this song.

  • sadejade - i know it is found in the stephen schwartz songbook. i believe he might actually have a digital download on his website of it.

  • Yes she was the singing voice for anastacia

  • and princess odette from the swan princess

  • I think this women does the singing voice of the anastacia the animated film.

  • She is indeed the singing voice of Anastasia.

  • and odette for swan princess

  • That was one of my favorite movies as a child. I LOVE her voice!

  • OMG me too!!! this is so cool! i am going to sing this song at my aunts wedding. =)

  • kind of a weird song to sing at a wedding

  • where can i find the sheet music to this song?

  • I think there may be a way to buy it from Stephen Schawtz's website.

  • Liz is amAHzing. I saw her live in Ohio singing this song.

  • This is NOT an easy song - especially for a soprano! She ALWAYS knows how to place her voice so it is never overpowering or blowing out her chops. This woman can keep her range until she's 90 if she keeps singing like this! Very inspirational.

  • This is amazing, btw. She's a goddess!!

  • Does anyone know what key this is in?

  • It's in E

  • E major

  • My favorite rendition of this song!!!

  • i got to hear her sing this song last night..she performed this at Stephen Schwartz and friends..beautiful

  • there is just something so beautifully smooth and effortless about her voice that just makes you sit relaxed and yet in awe all at once. and on such a beautiful song, she sounds amazing.

  • This is an example of textbook vocal execution, utterly stunning!

  • Thrilling!

Hello from a Liz Callaway fan in the U.K. Love her and her sister! I have happy memories of their remarkable show "Sibling Revelry" at the Donmar Warehouse in London.

What a cracking version of "Meadlowlark" this is ... lovely orchestration too. Was this a concert of Stephen Schwartz songs and is it a comercially available DVD? Would love to own it.

Liz Callaway embodies all that is good about the Broadway theatre!

  • No one could deny that Liz is a mixer's DREAM, but she *always* knows where to place things. In that way, she's really a very sensitive interpreter, and you have the feeling that she's being healthy about things. You get to relax and enjoy the performance, instead of worrying if she'll hit those top notes and bust a vocal chord (like you'll easily do with today's younger pop-belt divas) or come in flat. Here here for healthy, smart singing.

  • What a beautifully phrased comment!

    Liz is amazing. :)

  • Shes a very loverly singer. x

Is she like irish or sumin? lol .. cus wen she says sum things slower she sounds like she has an irish accent lol xx

  • I cried my eyes out. Spectacular

  • Totally agree - one of THEE best deliveries of this song - timbre, emotion and understanding. Sheer class (as he runs out to find her album).

  • 4:30 on gave me chills.

  • I think Liz's voice is such a rare talent. She could sing anything and it would sound beautiful. Her voice is so exquisite and gorgeous. She knows how to sing without belting her lungs out. She's a true performer.

  • She does this song the best I've ever heard.

  • Fantastic... I adore this song, it's so wonderful to sing. And she does it brilliantly.

  • BRAVA!!!! BRAvA|!! People, this is an example of what I would call exceptional singing!!!! Liz Callaway is like praying and telling a story. FANTASTICA|!!
