Meadowlark is one of the very best "story songs" ever written for the theater. Depending on the day or clip you hear, either could be "the best" LuPone for the sheer power (imagine her singing this close to 40 years ago -- get the OBCR). Liz for the beautiful way she tells the story, her phrasing/timing and that crystal clear vocal tone, quality and effortless range (I should say effortless appearing -- she's working hard!). Then toss in Betty Buckley or Audra McDonald and you have a real race
Ms. Lupone has been dethroned. This is the best version of this song I have ever heard. It is simply magnificent. Kudos to Liz, her beautiful voice and her performance of this song!!
What an absolutely exquisite instrument she has. So many colors in this voice--but never forced, moving effortlessly through some very difficult registers. Absolutely caresses the lyric. I was lucky enough to see her do this live.
This really is my favorite version of this song. She really has beautiful presentation of the song that is easy to listen to and has just the right amount of vocal acting. Not like other performances of this song in which pitch and vocal quality is sacrificed for over acting.
I first heard this song sung by Lupone in Chicago. She was the standard, by which I judged other versions. I've gotta say, this one really holds up for me. She's solidly in control of the song throughout. I like the performance by Ripley, too. It moved me to see what was happening to the singer/actor as she used the story of the lark to justify her leaving. Liz moves us with the imagery of the song and the sheer beauty of the voice. they're doing two different things, these ladies--and well!
Liz Callaway will be 90 and still sound like she's 17. Crystal clear and beautiful. The amazing this about this song is that it's so well constructed and gorgeously written that women with VERY different voices and interpretations can sing it and all sound great. Patti LuPone, Liz and even Sara Brightman couldn't be more different vocally, but they all have fantastic renditions of this song. It's speaks to the power of excellent songwriting as well as singing.
I don't see how there can even be debate over which rendition is the best. Patti Lupone sings out of her nose, Eden Espinosa sings out of her Throat. Liz Callaway sings out of her heart.
Bless this Lovely Singer ! This is just the right way to approach the material. Well acted and an exciting mix voice with just enough belt, but none of the screeching and yelling that some of the other girls choose.
she was the judge at Grand River National Show Choir Invitational in which my high schools show choir competed in! so we all met her, and she was the soloist competition judge so i got to sing for her! :)
I really love the gentle, romantic way Liz Callaway sings. However, I really think the other two popular version of this song (Patti LuPone and Alice Ripley) have their merits, too. Patti LuPone's concert versions are so forceful and fiery. Alice Ripley really acts and embodies the character in her performance of The Baker's Wife.
I think it's a testament to the songwriting that these singers can transform the song into their own pieces. It's just a tremendous song!!
Of all the versions I saw now this was the first and the best. Beautiful voice Liz Callaway, I am glad I grew up to Disney songs of the 90s and discovered her heavenly voice. And yes I literally cried in the meadowlark park where she dies :(
this was during lea salonga's concert at carnegie hall, 2005. liz was lea's special guest. they are good friends, and they actually sound alike, both have this crystal-clear voice.
If ever a performance deserved a standing ovation, it was that! What was up with that audience? Apart from 2 or 3 people, they remained resolutely seated. This is SO classy ... the best version EVER of "Meadowlark" ... Liz rules! :-)
liz callaway is awesome with this song, though i have to say i have heard her do a better version of it, she fluffsone of the notes here in, i think, the penultimum chorus, but this song is soo damm awesome, i love the story it tells! makes me cry at times lol
Ok... I'm sorry Patti, but this is just TOO beautiful. Patti is my idol, but Liz is just as good in this song! I think she reflects the real emotion of the song better, but when Patti sings it, it feels like it was written specifically for her... I don't know which rendition I like better
she is at a crossroads because she is married to an older baker and this young man and her have fallen in love. she is thinking about what she should do and she realizes that she has to be the meadowlark that she remembers from a story she was told as a child
it's so weird because the first time i heard this i liked it buti didnt love it because i was so used to hearing it in a french accent but as i listen to this again and again she just gets better and better. her voice has never gotten boring.
YAY!!!! i kept looking for this on itunes after i heard it on my friends ipod while we were falling asleep one night, and i couldn't find the right one... she's such a good singer!!!!
I have to say that Liz Callaway's rendition of "Meadowlark" is, by far, my absolute favorite. Her voice is gorgeous and she captures the song perfectly. Listen to the studio version on "The Story Goes On: Liz Callaway On & Off Broadway"--it's breathtaking.
The text below is a reply to "athespiangirl" (she wanted to know what key the song was in but for some reason, my reply didn't link up to her posting)

Liz Callaway embodies all that is good about the Broadway theatre!
No one could deny that Liz is a mixer's DREAM, but she *always* knows where to place things. In that way, she's really a very sensitive interpreter, and you have the feeling that she's being healthy about things. You get to relax and enjoy the performance, instead of worrying if she'll hit those top notes and bust a vocal chord (like you'll easily do with today's younger pop-belt divas) or come in flat. Here here for healthy, smart singing.
I think Liz's voice is such a rare talent. She could sing anything and it would sound beautiful. Her voice is so exquisite and gorgeous. She knows how to sing without belting her lungs out. She's a true performer.
BRAVA!!!! BRAvA|!! People, this is an example of what I would call exceptional singing!!!! Liz Callaway is like praying and telling a story. FANTASTICA|!!
One of the most underrated performers....and here she was stunning singing one Broadway's greatest ballads and probably Schwartz's best composition.

I think Liz's voice is such a rare talent. She could sing anything and it would sound beautiful. Her voice is so exquisite and gorgeous. She knows how to sing without belting her lungs out. She's a true performer.
