The Little Red Books! I was studying Chinese at Georgetown during the Cultural Revolution, and the books were one of the key parts. "Read the works of Chairman Mao!" was the slogan. The Little Red Book was a collection of his writings; my mother gave me one in English. In all the pictures everyone is carrying their book, because you were supposed to always have it with you to study and reform your character. I can't say it helped me much. It was a crazy time.
