Omg the rear air suspension was the like the dumbest thing Ford had come up with. I mean I know where they were coming from with it, but I had two of these Lincolns, they were really nice cars overall, but the air suspension went out on both of them. One from putting 3 people in the back seat and the other from going over a speed bump too fast
why stop at 2 wheel air spring, because four wheel air spring as found out by Rolls Royce makes no noticeable difference, since the back air does 98% of the work, and it saves on expense. maintenance, repair, and complexity of the system.
I just test drove a 2010 Town Car, & was really disappointed with the ride quality. The car "jiggled" all the while on the road, it wasn't anything harsh, but you could feel every little ripple on the road, & when it hit potholes, you could feel and hear them. Gone is the ride of the 1980-89 Town Car, where it was butter soft & could barely feel railroad tracks underneath. I believe the air leveling system is what is causing this degradation in ride. Did the 1990-99 Town Cars ride "jiggly" too?
@Nightbird nope. they're nice and buttery just like the eighties. i just bought a 92 exective and it's actually a prettty good handling car considering the size and weight and it really does get up and move when you step on it.
@somekidwithanm4 Thanks for the info! It gives me hope that if I can find one in good condition it will give me the nice soft ride I remember from the 80's. I really would like a Cartier version as they usually have the moonroof standard, as moonroofs are rare on TC's for some reason. Make sure you check your air bladders on yours, as those things are very expensive when they go out, so get an extended warranty if you can to help you cover the cost, as it WILL go out one day. Hope yours is good!
I love the suspension moves while braking at 2:33.... it looks like you're driving Titanic! Dang, american cars may not be as fast or tight as european but if there's something they have to show is luxury and comfort!
if it were my decision at ford i wouldve equipped the 90 towncar with the 5.0 HO until the DOHC mod motor was ready for 1993 and then dropped that in, theres no reason why they should have saddled the towncar with the sohc 2 valve when the prices they sold them at could justify installing the 32v modular and if the italian cast alloy blocks were a problem the dohc hardware works on the cast iron block
@Rollsroycemoney Do you have anything intelligent or constructive to say? If you don't like what I said fine, counter it with something that we can use.
@studpuppy69 The M3 E30 that is more than 20 years old had a four cylinder natural aspirated engine that produced 200HP, so 150HP is very poor for a V8.
I like the car, is very impressive, specially if you see it in a European city.
@WHITEVOLK8814 there is quite a difference in the two cars, obviously a m3 is a sports car that was tuned to perfection back in the day. The lincoln towncar is a comfortable cruiser that was not tuned sporty as old people would probably have a heart attack. If you wanted a sporty lincoln you should look at the mark series, mainly mark 8
@WHITEVOLK8814 i guess 150 HP was alot of Horse power back in 1990.....given the motors strong torque in the low RPM Range it certainly still had some Get-Up and go to it.
@form109 A 5 litre V8 with only 150hp wasn´t good back in 1990, the 3 litre V8 that BMW used in the 90s for the 5 and 7 series produced abou 211hp, so...
@WHITEVOLK8814 oh well, the Engine Still has 280 Ft Ibs of torque for the 160 HP,and 270 Ft Ibs of Torque for the 150 HP engine....the 1991 Towncars increased power to 210 HP with the Modular Engine Verses the Windsor of the 1990 Towncars,so...
@form109 The BMW M60B40 with 4 litres produced 286hp, so...
Anyway, in a car like this is not all about the power. If the engine was powerful enough to move the car and it was quiet and reliable, then it was appropiated.
Nice video... I'm sure you know that Canada uses Litres for fuel and not Imperial Gallons as I'm assuming they did back in 1990... its kind of remarkable that a car back then would cost $44,163 (even in Canadian dollars) from my research the exchange rate then was $0.87 CAD / $1 US. But I wouldn't think that I would want RWD as they advertise here I know Town Cars to be useless in the snow (and seen it first hand).

@lightningbuster you can change the rear airbags to soft spring suspension. the front air suspension is better.

agreed, 150 hp for a 5 litre is bad but it does have 280 ft lbs of torque
andyass3 1 year ago
@andyass3 It needs that torque to move the tank.=)
