When climbing, you cut away from below whatever is necessary to give you a clear path and good hand hold above. Then go as high as you can using your arms and legs, then use the hand holds to pull your self up. Going down, keep a good hold on the hand holds while you are lowering your body and getting your legs around the tree. At first opportunity, I am going to get video of that process so it will be clearer how it is done.

yeah hey lets all climb coconuts tree's without fall protection and use a machete which could potentially hurt you badly. DUMB ASSES

He uses a machete. That is a very big knife, if you are not familiar with machetes.
