the corruption is called demonite i think and you can only break it with demonite pickaxe you can use dynamite to blow it up get shadow orbs and summon this big worm and gives u good loot and ore so then you can make a pick also you haven't completed your house so you got no npcs
Hold right click while crafting anything to "mass produce" it. And sand is very good for removing water. Dump a bunch of sand blocks in the water, and they will replace the water blocks. Dig them up after and profit.

Sunflowers remove corruption in areas dontain place some and get rid of the corruption.
