Benny Mardones wrote this song about this sixteen year old girl who use to live in his building in Spanish Harlem. Her father walked out on the entire family, Benny felt sorry for her and paid her to walk his dog. One day, she came dressed up to go walk his dog and he said she was the most beautiful 16 year old he had ever seen. His friend said hey who's that. He told him, now she's just 16 years old, leave her alone, thus the song was born.

I have never understrood the negative "Chester" comments about this wonderful song.

Throughout the history of pop music there have been several references to young females (for example, Ringo Starr..."She's 16, she's beautiful, and she's mine") and yet Benny seems to get slammed about it.

This song is about yearning, and pain, and wanting something forbidden.

I was about 16 when this song came out and I think it captured all the complexities of romance that my young mind questioned.

I almost hate to even say this...but I have to. I'm a rock-based musician (drummer), married guy with kids, pushing 40...To this day, there are only 2 songs in HISTORY that have ever actually made me cry. This is one of them. (the second is a Christian song called 'Tell Them' by Andrae Crouch & the Disciples).

I think I first heard it on 'Family Ties' 20+ years ago. Then lost it for about 10yrs. and rediscovered it. I didn't even know the performer's name. Just an incredible song.

My father grew up in the Syracuse region where Mardones has a huge following and he gave me a copy of the album, Never Run, Never Hide. The track "Mighta Been Love" and Dick Clark tribute, "American Bandstand" are my fav. tracks from NRNH.

And yeah, he does sound a bit like Steve Perry but Benny Mardones has a raspier voice than Steve Perry.

this is the best sound quality so far for this song. he doesn't have a video for this song does he?  i don't like what they did to this song when they re-released it in 2001, i think. it ruined the passion and emotion in his voice and the instrumentation sounds too structured and not at all like the original which sounds raw like it should. it was my first love song with my first boyfried when i was 15. i think i had sex to this song too. ha ha thank you.
