ummmn..... Last I checked, DDT was responsible for saving countless lives in Africa, and scientific evidence showed that DDT was not fully proven to harm animals such as the bald eagle.
I didn't read all the below comments but people shoot eagles all the time. At the wildlife center I volunteer at in Oregon we constantly see Bald eagles who are shot. Currently we have a non-releasable Bald Eagle with us who has a bullet in his shoulder, preventing him from moving his right wing. People shoot Bald Eagles because they sometimes eat dead farm animals, and farmers often assume they are killing their livestock.

@activate124 Haha do your research. I never even heard of anyone hunting Eagles or even get comfortable to go NEAR them in fear of scaring or hurting them. You think American's, who are extremely patriotic to the point the rest of the world finds us annoying, is going to hurt a national symbol? Like anobar said, it was the pesticide that we didn't realize it would hurt them that bad and thus those kinds of pesticides became illegal. It's even Illegal to harm a Bald Eagle. You have no idea.
@activate124 ..........what in the hell are you talking about? Hunting eagles is NOT a sport in the U.S.! In fact, quite the opposite is true - almost all citizens here hold eagles in high regard. You NEVER hear of people killing eagles. That's why we eagles that are 25-35 years old. The reason their population was endangered years ago was cause in the 1960s they used a pesticide called DDT which made eagle egg shells real brittle. It was outlawed in 1972. A now we have a HUGE eagle population.
thank the Lord, I never thought i'd see the day that eagles would be taken off the edangered species list, it almost made me cry to see this wonderful news shared on here, thanks to those great preservationalists!

I actually saw an eagle perched on a large tree branch just above a road I used to drive on. It was a huge bird! Stunning to see, too.
