  • How about a poll tax refund upon confirmation of having voted?

  • I thought democrats liked taxes?

  • This is a planning problem on the part of the districts mentioned. Voting could be so easy: you show a picture ID, you vote ONE time. Is it possible that the long lines are caused because we require less of voters than those buying a 6 pack?!

  • Thats not a poll tax, its fuking BULLSHIT! That was an obvious strategy to discourage people from voting. Places to vote should be directly proportional to the population of that area. One hour is okay, two hours is really pushing it, and anything over three hours is unexceptable. Especially since its the Presidential Election. This is just another fine example of the Republicans trying to fix another election as if 2000 and 2004 elections were not enough.

  • One of the problems is that we have too many voters per representative.

  • Poor people have no stake in taxes.

  • @tommygun6644 they do. and voting is not all about taxes. are you a fucking retard?

  • @erjoalgo You should probably think before you speak, cocksucker. We need a flat tax in this country. The all pandering party in power does is threaten to raise taxes on the higher brackets, which the lower-income majority has no stake in. This cunt dike supports class warfare just like the rest of you commies.

  • @tommygun6644

"we need a flat tax in this country" is the most retarded thing I've heard recently. 1% of society swallows 27% of all the wealth, THAT IS CLASS WARFARE by itself.

And by the way, who are these 1%? Great inventors whose work contribute much to society? The most hardworking? No, these are people who dont do a damn thing except play around with money. Nobody deserves to have that much more than everybody else for doing nothing, and we should tax the hell out of their pockets.

  • @erjoalgo You really are a clueless, demented lib. So the top 1% don't do anything eh? Since you obviously don't know, the rich either make other people wealthy or invent/manufacture things that make YOUR life easier. Nobody is rich for no reason, ass hat....except politicians.

  • @tommygun6644

trickle down ideas have been tried in this country over and over again and they fail. "the rich either make other people wealthy" they make politicians wealthy, which in turn make them wealthy in a never ending circle of greed. The administrative skill This country will be great again when money flows around society, people having purchasing power benefits everyone, not when its all stockpiled in the top 1%. And trust me, THE RICH WILL STILL BE RICH.

  • @erjoalgo *Yawn*

    Even Karl Marx, who I'm sure you adore, admitted capitalism worked, it just wasn't fair ; ;

The government cannot create wealth or prosperity. It can only destroy it. The only thing that can create that is the quest for profit. This is the land of equal opportunity, not equal results. If you don't like it, leave.

  • @tommygun6644

"The government cannot create wealth or prosperity. It can only destroy it." Thats too much bullshit concentrated in one sentence.

There is a balance between expanding and maintaining an equitable society, and right now we are about to fall to the right of that balance. Raise taxes for the wealthy, spend money on society, the rich will still be filthy rich, but the society as a whole will be bettered, when money is actually being used for something useful rather than gambling.

  • @erjoalgo The fun line runs along what "rich" is. As predicted, it is now lowered to anyone not in the projects since even the lowest tax bracket, 10% is going up to 15% on the 1st of January. You and Obama have no leg to stand on; you just believe you can spend people's money better then themselves.

  • @tommygun6644

"better 'then' themselves" go back to grade school learn to spell.

First, that "rich people's money" is the people's money robbed. Second, no one can sped money better than oneself with one's own interest in mind, not the case with society's interest. But when you have too much money to even know what to do with it you should be taxed. How do you justify that average people pay the same or higher tax rate than the richest? Third Obama is no progressive, dont blame him as he hasnt

  • @erjoalgo

done almost anything he is either too big of a coward or bought by the rich. Fourth, the tax code that he outlined doest consider rich anyone but the VERY RICH. Why do you support letting yourself be robbed?

  • @erjoalgo I'm on a phone asshat, blow me about the spelling.

The progressive tax code is designed to keep the middle class down, idiot. There is a reason when you go to about 36,000 a year, you jump up 10% in the federal tax bracket. Besides, the rich already pay a disgusting amount of taxes, look it up. The tax code needs to be simplified so people pay the same rate, progressives are the main cause of capital flight with their messy tax hikes.

You are fringe and aren't worth arguing with.

  • @tommygun6644

YOU aren't worth arguing with, keep your "flat tax" mentality, the most stupid shit Ive heard recently. And no, the rich dont pay a "disgusting amount of taxes". Oh, and dont forget about whats happening with the estate tax, but you probably did already as you cant even remember how to spell a basic word.

  • @erjoalgo About how Obama is brining back the death tax, and some families will have to sell their inherited homes to pay the death tax? Yeah, I know about that. Oh, and the top 5% pays 60% of the federal income tax in this country. Doubt you knew that because this butch or that guido Cenk never brings it up.

  • @tommygun6644 The top 5% also controls 72% of the financial wealth in the country.

Also, "Guido". Real classy, throwing ethnic slurs around.

  • @erjoalgo OMFG so true trickle down ecomonics is just that, only a little bit trickes down.... Reaganomics already proved a disaster. Govt grew under reagan and look at his failed star wars and the Iran Contra affair... They should all be in jail!!!!!

  • @erjoalgo I bet you think Bill Gates or Steve Jobs don't deserve all that wealth as you sit chugging away on a keyboard, right idiot? Go take a real economics course.

  • @tommygun6644 Of course Bill Gates and Steve Jobs deserve all the wealth they have earned... They just need to pay their fair shair and the loopholes for the uber rich closed....

  • @smethious please check the record of Buffet and Gates---they are in FAVOR of more fair taxation. it is the Waltons of Wal Mart and the family that ownws Mars candy empire that are wanting to keep it all and not pay their fair taxes.

  • @gggreggg I was using them as an example or metaphor... I know that several high profile very rich people are saying that... the extreme earnings and wealth with existing loopholes allows them to be taxed at 17%... and i blame this all squarely on republitards!!

  • I cant stand this liberal dike!! I cant stand immoral liberals period!! I cant stand conservative bs artist republicans either!! You wanna know why I cant stand either party? Cos they are both the same fucking party!! the ' Fuck America " party!! they are all traitors and need to be held to account for the countless crimes against humanity!! in the name of greed and control!! You imbeciles better wake up soon!! ML is right around the corner!!

  • Rachel Maddow makes me want to throw up. Yarrrrrf. There, see.

  • poll tax had to be paid six moths before the election in Virginia. Not when you voted.

  • Its called absentee....

  • YOU LIE!

  • Very interesting - stumbled upon this looking for Poll Tax in the UK. However in the UK we make provisions for postal voting, which I participate in - ensures you get your vote, if you can't reach a polling station. No need for time off work or visiting a polling station - not sure of the US system though :)

  • It is done in some states.

But you never know what could happen to your ballot if you vote the wrong way. The electronic votes are worse - poof, and it's lost in the ether, or even switched to your opponent.

And amazingly (or not), election fraud is rarely prosecuted, and punishments, when they occur at all, are light.

  • Rachel Maddow is fucking sexy.

  • ya i got a thing for lesbians.

  • Oh wait, and apparently her party is made up of more people with graduate degrees than Republicans. That means you can add well educated right after your "non-english speakers."

  • That's a variable stat...secondly, you have to explain the other end of the spectrum also.

For example, CNN 2006 U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES / NATIONAL / EXIT VOTER POLL .

Yes, post grads was higher for dems at 58% vs. 41% for reps. But, voters with No high school degree at all voted 64% dem, 35% rep.

  • danima19579, funny! I'm not saying I agree, just saying it's funny.

  • Dude, ACORN was declared a non-issue months ago. Where have you been?

  • just because you leftwing lunatics say its a non issue doesnt make it true. since when is federal indictment for voter fraud a non issue? oh yea when you wacko liberals say so........

  • If that isn't the pot calling the kettle black when Saxby Chamblis has a financial interest in the Diebold company (manufacturer of suspect electronic voting machines).

  • No its not u dumbass, i was just pointing out the double standard idiot liberals have, and say anything just to try and make their poin sound valid, kinda like your comment

  • Right-wing turds invented the double standard - especially when it comes to PAYING taxes.

  • So what if someone loses their job because they stood in line for 5 plus hours? Screw them?

  • She is against the poll tax. Time to learn to listen or even have a history of her show. Get a fucking clue.

  • ACORN is a worthless organizaton ..they use bully tactics and intimidate banks to lend to the worst of mortgage candidates. ACORN has teams called "home savers" which assemble with short notice (probably cuz they are unemployed) to prevent people from being evicted. Sounds like an invitation for disorder....and subsidized with your tax dollars!

  • They'll be marching up your driveway next. Be thankful they are concerning themselves with only the homeless. I would not worry about ACORN so much. I am certain that you will continue to be free to be as selfish as you wish in the future as well. There are no laws against avarice.

  • Right on, Ms. Maddow

  • What a jackass.

  • maddow is right

  • She is not a tranny. She is a dike militant.

  • Tell daschle to pay his taxes

  • Maddow is not transsexual. Nice try on insulting her and transgendered persons but you failed on both accounts. Please happily continue on in your personal failures.

  • Are you against equal rights for Trans sexuals?

  • Absolutely not.

You're implying that Maddow is transsexual but she is not.

  • You should learn to be more tolerant, you know TS's don't have it so easy, especially when they are in the public eye such as Maddow.

  • I preferred this Maddow dude when he was just a guest panelist on other shows. I don't really think he can carry a show of his own

  • early voted the first day...5 minutes.

  • Who ever wrote this should be awared. They couldn't have it much better.

  • glib and drunk on the kool aid. let's see if she is still around at the end of the presidents first term

  • well said. a very over-looked issue and very very relevant. make election day a holiday!!!! and vote for rachel maddow for president!!!

  • so classy.

    so classy.

    soooo classy.

    i love rachel maddow.

  • to bad you got kicked out of school. at least you could've been more educated. whatever, shove your stupid bigotry up your ass.

  • ...what an ironic misspelling of 'opinion'.

  • I think this is a clear message that election day should be a made a national holiday. I also, think the media tried to discourage people from showing up to vote due to the long lines. We have to come up with a better system for voting.

  • what a dumb thing to say.

  • You get points for being funny

  • at least you don't make sense.

  • You're an ass..

  • It's time to switch to an all-mail voting system. This has been used in Oregon for 10 years and the kinks are worked out. No lines, no having to be in town on election day, no cost for poll workers, etc. The only thing lacking is the "aura" of voting in a booth--which today may be a paper, or touchscreen or an absentee ballot. We an create a new "aura"; we can't create a vote for people who are unable for financial or physical reasons to wait in a line!

    hallie

  • I'm writing a paper on this in my English class. Maddow is SOOOO right!

  • Did she say the 2004 election in Ohio was decided by 10k votes? Perhaps she should check the final results before stating the lie. Bush won Ohio by 136,483 votes.

  • Listen again before calling it a lie. She said a poll found that 129,000 voters in Ohio got tired of waiting in the long lines and so didn't vote in 2004. She continued to say "that's 10,000 more votes than the margin by which Kerry lost..."

    129,000 + 10,000 = 139,000

  • The current 'fascist' America's voting procedures must be overseen by 'International Observers' to monitor elections rather than the 'privately owned' armed security' firms presently engaged to keep order at the voting polls. Methinks the good ole USA is rapidly approaching 'third world' status. Poor dumb-downed America; it's a shame, damn scam, too.

  • Thumbs up for Americans who take the time to line up for hours just to vote. In my country, election day is a public 'holiday'. Still, that doesn't mean all citizens get to vote.

Perhaps the US government could do the same - declare a holiday. It does not necessarily shorten the queues or ensure that everyone gets to vote, but at least, it should eliminate the poll tax.

  • My DH & I are disabled... I guess we'll be taking chairs with us because there's NO WAY we will NOT VOTE. We believe to strongly in that right and won't let long lines dissuade us and hope others feel the same way.

After this election this MUST be fixed.. NO American who can legally vote should be prevented from voting.

  • In Singapore, you would have access to a specially designated queue, a short-cut to the ballot box. Your perseverance, despite not having that privilege, is to be admired.

  • Before I saw this last night I was aware of the long lines in some places but it never occurred to me to consider this way. I was impressed.

To me this is what patriotism is. Not just waving a flag but striving to make it so you can be proud of what it stands for. Not turning a blind eye and crying foul when its necessary.

  • I bet most of those in line are Republican operatives who are just clogging up the system.

  • This commentary is full of win.

  • Rachel is very right. Please go vote

  • As we speak (comment), local, commercial television "investigative news" clowns are storyboarding their serious questionings of voting irregularities... which will air JUUUST as the polls are closing.

Note what advertisers come on just after these reports. They (the advertisers) are paying BIG BUCKS for those slots... when viewers are functioning on an emotional & semi-conscious level. Do you really need those goods and services?

Be actively conscious and rational in your televiewing choices.

  • We have to fix this...

  • Rachel is a Patriot. Your country needs you. Stand in the line, as long as you have to, don't leave until you vote. Obama needs your Vote! Obama-Biden '08.
