hey pal, did you try playin with the h1 gain to eliminate the room noise and then reposition the rodemic to get the best clean audio? May have helped eliminate those fans, would be annoying in an interview circumstance...
@fotizome I did my best with it, its a gaming computer and if you've ever put one together you understand how loud 4 140mm 100+cfm and 6 120mm 90+cfm fans are xD The thing sounds like a borderline vacuum cleaner to keep on my internals running cool
Well I can't get a Rode mic cause I have a d5000 and it doesn't have a mic input. But since the Zoom H1 is portable, I should have no problem purchasing this, right?
@baldheadkid The Rode mic offers that distinct uni-directional feel. The Zoom H1 has an excellent mic, although it's also a good recording gadget. Grab a boom pole, connect them, then voila, you're instantly a boom operator.
See I have a 5D mkII and a Rode video mic. The problem with that is the annoying hiss sound I get from the 5Ds AGC. I need something external to remove that so I was thinking about buying the h1 or the h4. But now that I saw your video I still hear the hissing sound. Its drastically decreased but still there. Is it the Rode video mic that sucks or is there any other way to get rid of the hissing sound?
@orenzone buy both if you can budget it. Unless you've installed Magic Lantern on your t2i I wouldn't hook the mic directly to it. But even then you should invest in a digital recorder. The digital recorder will give you audio control that you dearly need. Not only does the H1 show impressive results for its price, it's compact, great with batteries and probably the best little piece of audio equipment out there for beginning DSLR film makers. Just do your research and decide!
This kinda doesn't make sense, your testing the H1 recording quality but you hooked it up to the rode videomic, you should have recorded the audio straight from the stereo of the H1 itself, because since you hooked up the rode to the h1, your getting the sound quality from the rode instead.
@TheTowelPaper the whole point is that you buy the H1 to control the gain of the audio. We do this because we cant control gain with our DSLRs external mic inputs so we get a terrible hiss. Film makers will buy the H1 not for it's microphones necessarily, but merely as a little gain control to hook perhaps to the bottom of the pole for the sound guy to manage the audio thats coming in from the shotgun mic at the end of the pole.
Hey, how do you edit with it? Do you just take the audio clip and the video clip and sync them together? Or is there an easier way of doing it? Somebody please reply. Thanks.
Great video and high quality. Could you please explain exactly how to use both Zoom H1 and Rode Videomic together? Does rode plug straight into the H1? When you are outside, how do you have them rigged to your camera and how do you get the sound from Rode to H1 when you put rode on a stand by your subject (say 30 ft away)??? Thank you very much...
Hmm, the dangling could be a problem 'cuz its not directed properly and it's totally loose. How do you get both a Zoom H1 and a mic on a boom mic or on the hotshoe mount at the same time?
@PhotoExtremist I don't do that anymore, it was just like that for my first test run with it. I keep the h1 in my audio bag or pocket and run a cable to it down the boom pole
@forgottenbow I like your set-up. I'm thinking of having the same set-up myself but I'm using a Audio Technica ATR-6550 shotgun mic and a shockmount. But I still have to get my own Zoom H1. I have this major concern though. Can you monitor the audio with headphones while recording?
Hey man, I really need some help with this. What audio level do you set your H1 to when you record dialog with the rode videomic. I have mine around 60 and the sound is really quiet.
@motu828mk2 most people don't buy the H1 for the built in mics. They sound good, yeah. But the majority of people watching are going to use it for hooking in other mics
I'm a little confused, is this audio from the H1? or is it audio from the rode mic recorded on the h1 instead of having it record to the t2i track?
Sorry for the any confusion, i'm just wondering because i need to buy a mic and i was largely considering the H1, and if it sounds like the audio in your video than i'll probably get it.
@forgottenbow I mean don't EVER put the mic on the camera! Put your mic on a stand or whatever you can make just above you (just out of shot) and your audio will improve. Always bring your mic in as CLOSE as possible to your talent. Search for juicedlinks chanel with many very useful tutorials.
Isn't Rode a bit quiet? Or is it only with me? I had to set levels to 75 to get something, also I can't monitor levels, because it's too quiet. I also have to normalize it on computer.
@mrjackbaran nah, you sync it up in post. Its pretty easy, you just clap before your action starts and line up the clap from the H1 with the clap from the built in mic. Maybe you could plug the H1 into the camera... hmmm...
@forgottenbow - I just read you can plug it in: "Actually you can hook up your H1 directly to the T2i using a 3.5 mm stereo jack cable. Though the jack cable is not the pro standard, it is the best way to get you sound synced from an external recorder. So you do record your audio straight... to the camera."

Im wondering, how can I mount my H1 to my cam also while the rode is on there?

@samuraimacisthebest a camera grip that screws into the tripod mount on the bottom that has a threaded top would work

this may be a stupid question, but why would you need the Rode Videomic if you get the Zoom H1 or any Zoom for that matter?
