@ccm800 B.S. The real reason: 25 years ago I nearly starved myself to death with veganism. Plus, there are many kids starving at the insistence of their misinformed vegan parents.
I've read Gabriel and Bush are vegetarians; I'm not knocking vegetarianism in the traditional sense — simply avoiding meat — which can be healthful if practiced intelligently.
Veganism — avoiding all foods of animal origin — can lead to severe malnutrition and health problems, including mental health problems.
A tragic illustration: in 2008 in Washington state, a devout vegan named Jeffrey Calvert, 41, stalked and later murdered his ex-girlfriend in her home before turning the gun on himself, while the woman's terrified 9 and 11 year-old daughters hid in a closet.
Calvert, who had worked as assistant finance manager at a health-food store in Bellingham, was convicted of stalking a previous ex-girlfriend in Seattle in 1995.

I think it's a good idea to look at what macrobiotic could teach you. Oshawa was actually a bit extreme. But take a look at some Michio kushi paper. They are not as extreme as oshawa. And the increasing number of intollerance to the milk product is not a simple random fact isn it? Integrate some good micorbiotic principles is not make a microbiotic your religion. You have to reason always with your mind!
In 1980, at 17, I had had health problems which prompted me to read "Sugar Blues", by William Dufty. I subsequently cut back on sugar & refined grains, which was a reasonable thing to do. I felt better within days.
Had I simply eliminated sugar & refined grains, that would have been a very healthy change. However, in 1982, I joined a punk band in Seattle (I'm a musician), & the harsh lifestyle & experiences I had while in the band led to an emotional breakdown; I was feeling agitated & lost.
I had recalled Dufty's mention of George Ohsawa (referred to in "Sugar Blues" as Nyoiti Sakurazawa), so I read Ohsawa's book, "You Are All Sanpaku". I consumed the book, practically memorizing it. Ohsawa's writings became my religion. I did attempt the infamous "#7" diet of nothing but brown rice and other whole grains. At other times, I included a wider variety of macrobiotic foods (tofu, seaweeds, etc.). However, the higher the macrobiotic diet "number" I followed, the weaker I felt.
After a few months of macrobiotics, my weight plummeted to 145 pounds. The problem with that: I'm 6'6" (200 cm). Imagine singer Trace Adkins or Basketball hero Michael Jordan--both the same height as I--weighing only 145 pounds. I was then living at home, & my mother was shocked one day when she saw me shirtless. I looked like I had just been released from Auschwitz. My mom begged me to quit macrobiotics, but I refused, angrily invoking Ohsawa's teachings, to protect me from the heathen lies!
I thought then that my weight loss was due to "detoxifying" or "transitioning". I also often thought I was "failing" at macrobiotics. Nonsense! I was in fact starving to death, with abundant food nearby.
Luckily, I gave into cravings for cheese, eggs, butter. I soon felt better, & within weeks my weight rose to a healthier 170.
In time I un-learned macrobiotic brainwashing, & learned that there are essential nutrients available only in animal foods. I now weigh 235 -- reasonable for my height.
I now also understand the intense need in some people to control their lives via manipulation of their diet--but it often turns into a narcissistic road to self-destruction.
Those afflicted with anorexia are often drawn to macrobiotics or veganism, both of which offer eloquent rationalizations for the elimination of a variety of foods from ones diet, which the anorectic uses for the purpose of gaining control over his or her life.
The need to belong to something is another reason.
Some people might be "cured" by a strict macrobiotic diet because of where those people were coming from. These people had likely consumed anything & everyting -- low-quality, toxin laden commercial foods, junk & fried foods, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, medicines, etc.
Switching from all that to only brown rice should be considered a fast --eating nothing-- for a period of time, which can detoxify your body.
But a fast is only useful if done for a few days or weeks--not months or years!
@selatik1 this is in your opinion - and not necessarily true or agreed upon outside of Anglo wisdom and healing. An open mind is essential to revolutionizing existence
@ccm800 Of course it's my freaking opinion. Just as you and the Kushis have your opinions. I'm not about to bow to half-starved opinion-promoting Kool-Aid drinkers who deny the realities of human nutritional requirements. My further opinion is that macro-psychotics, and its cousin veganism, are starvation regimens perpetuated by traumatized idiots cannibalizing their own brain tissue, and committing criminal acts of neglect on their children. Would thee likest to hear more of mine opinion?
@selatik1 Wow - Calm down! Just because your a carnivore doesn't mean you can bite my head off. Kushi would tell you that you are so aggressive due to all the animal protein. I hope you calm down long enough to enjoy life. BTW many of the musicians you have on your favorites ARE vegetarian - Peter Gabriel - Kate Bush.
George Ohsawa was a chain-smoking wife beater who had a huge anger problem. He also "wasted too many words", as Ohsawa himself put it. Why? He was unsure of himself, so he kept digging deeper. What at first was a sensible dietary regimen became a more and more complex and convoluted food religion that no sane person could follow -- not even Ohsawa.
u hear a lot of unfounded rumors and believe in them. u make some wrong connections between unrelated things and see only a negative picture.
but u don't have personal experience with Oshawas nr 7 rice and cereal diet do u? i know people who got cured from serious and chronic diseases following Oshawas diet directions.
how do u know his wife didnt deserve it!? maybe she beat him also!
Great video, sticking to George Oshawa's basic whole grain diet (way of life actually) prolong's and preserves lives. These books that explain the basic relationship between man & food are not circulated as they should. Partly it's because of the great loss they would cause companies that sell manufactured-sugar-filled foods.
Macrobiotics may not currently now or in the past have ever been for everybody. The imperfect becomes perfect and vice-versa. The clever design of God with its freewill given to man allows for the colorful dramatic historical events that make up past, present and future situations. Man gets distracted for many reasons to satisfy his five senses. How long before we all embrace George Ohsawa's teachings? One has to really want to know God. This is what I have found to be true to my satisfation.
So if I studied macrobiotics and now realize God to my satisfaction I should then just forget it all and give you a break. Why? Are you paying my way through life? Should I really be so concerned by what you think? You need to get over all your insecurities and control issues and or keep your dysfunction to yourself. Give anyone that comes into contact with you a break. Try that out for a change.
He is son of Michio Kushi (who studied under Georges Ohsawa and founded [with his wife, Aveline Kushi] Erewhon Natural Foods, the East West Journal, the East West Foundation, the Kushi Foundation, One Peaceful World and the Kushi Institute); yet Lawrence never forcefully pushes his parents' ideals. Although he indeed promotes macrobiotics, he does so from a practical and objective point of view. Oh, haha and in the video he seems like a super nice guy!
What is it that you know about macrobiotics? Have you self-studied this philosophy for very long and if so have you met this guy, Lawrence Kushi? He sounds very interesting.

The new food "pyramid" from the USDA is strikingly similar to macrobiotic principles.I would eat less grains and more legumes however.

As you blame so you are.... Oh, FYI, Ohsawa beat his wife, and died of malnutrition. In approximately that order.
