  • Someone please answer: Is it safe to say that all 4 of these orbitals exist "in" every atom? It's just that some elements (for example Helium, He) don't have enough electrons to fill up the other higher energy levels? What I mean is that when we say transition metals have a d-orbital, and He only has the s-orbital...is that incorrect to say? Technically, helium also "has" a d-orbital (or even an f-orbital), it just doesn't have enough valence electrons that are in the f or d orbital??

  • I have a question (sorry if my English is bad).

    What happens when one orbital is in the other? for example: we have one part of "2p" orbital on "z" line, after that, there is a "3d" orbital on "z" line, completely surrounding the "2p" on the same line. I don't understand this thing: 1st-Is the chance of finding electron bigger on the part where two orbitals are combined? 2nd- Electron cloud is negatively charged, so the two clouds would separate because of the same charge,they can not combine

  • I still don't understand. Why do physicist's accept the uncertainty principle? That something is "impossible" to know? Don't you think if we had a camera that took a million pictures a second and looked at an atom, we could calculate a path of the electrons? What was Quantum Mechanics an answer to? What was the problem with classical physics and Bohr's model? I'm sorry, I'm just getting into physics and I have a terrible time trying to believe this, but I'm not in bad company (with Einstein).

  • @Schneckism Electrons are in constant, Brownian motion; thus, their paths do not repeat and are completely random based on electron repulsion. So this is the idea behind you cannot know both variables at one given time.

Lady - please - those orbitals are based upon theory - uncertainty - it may be an uncomfortable fact - but this is all theoretical - don't talk down to the little children - they can handle it - infinite energy levels is just theory until you create yet another element and name it after adolf hitler - then theory gets rather sordid and controversial - stop rushing - and stop disrespecting the role and power of theory - otherwise this becomes witchcraft

  • I don't get it what do the numbers represent why does the S orbital have 1 orbital in each sub level, and why does a d orbital have 5 orbitals in each sub level. I've been doing As chemistry for only a couple of days so I find all this really confusing.

  • @cptanzia They don't explain the why at any point during A Level as to why there's only 1 s orbital etc. (not as far as I can remember anyway). I took chemistry through to the end of A2 and don't believe they told us why at any point

  • The relativ atom mass is to handel with (g/mol=x*10^-36) for the exactly molecularmass and so the exactly ratio.

    Example: The molecular mass divide by the number of atoms and then to ratiomasses you want.
