Cause third age doesnt have a fully replaced models data base like i.e. Call of Warhammer. The entries to most of the medieval and kingdoms models are still in the models db. So I submodded third age total war by using a medieval vanilla model adding an entry into the EDU text and using merc texture. As the model has a sword for its secondary weapon unlike Third age pike models, I can give them the secondary animation.

Two things might give you that impression.

1 is that I did not use fraps. I used a dvr set on hi-definition

the moral of the story.. never enter into a renaissance era badwar without a backup weapon. :D Saruman was so intent on cranking out huge volumes of urukhai pikemen that he forgot to give them swords or daggers.

swiss square is even a version of the Spanish Tercio

Nope. Gonzalo Fernandez de Córdoba (aka "The great captain" was a general of the spanish army who created the basics of the spanish tercios, wich started operating in Granada (1492) and Napoli (1495)

then, after the "Gran Ordenanza" of 1503 by the Catollic Kings, the tercios were established as we know them.

also, that recruitment system it´s a fact, but even the Spanish Tercio and the Swiss Square wasn´t the same as well. tercio system was superior than square system because of tercio was able to divide in mobile units with more fluency to reach hand-to-hand combat

its comparing apples and oranges. Contemporary Swiss mercenaries (nemesis of terico) were dedicated pikemen only.

The Tercio was a combined arms unit. It was a state recruited unit. defensive and static.

Contemporary Swiss state army -Canton (pike column) consisted of 3 guards. Vanguard (mounted crossbowmen, crossbowmen, pikemen and halberdiers). Middle guard (pikemen and halberdiers with cantonel banners in the center), rearward guard (pikemen and halberdiers).

@Maralden tercios was smaller, like 2 k man while swiss square was of 10 k man.... also tercios had mosketeers too in the formation

they do rout but they were killed so fast they had no time to begin rout until they were almost totally annihilated.

i just dont like real combat. I dont think pikes look right fighting on city walls with their pikes. I also dont like the odd animations of an 18 foot pike poking someone from only 1 foot away.

third age total war is a mod for medieval 2 total war kingdoms. It is downloadable at twcenter dot net under released mods. The swiss armored pikemen are my own personal touch.

The pike square, Gewalthaufen XDD. I think Swiss army had best pikemen and tactics of their time....depends time line... Must have excellent infantry, specially for country with no cavalry at all...or just few....But in 15th century europe Swiss army and merceneries had most elite "pole weapon" troops ...right?? German Landsknechts were very effective too... Maybe my commen doesnt even has nothing to do with your video, but anyway..LOL :-)) Nice video and VERY NICE UNIT !!

many vanilla models still exists in the model db folder for third age total war. If the model exists than all you have to do is copy the EDU entry from vanilla medieval 2 total war and paste it into the EDU folder of third age. You would first need some basic knowledge of modding to do this however. I had to add texture lines for this particular model and create a unique EDU entry.

Swiss armored pikemen mod are 13 attack and 14 defense. Swiss have 13 attack, noble pikemen in full plate have 14 defense. They have secondary weapons. swiss armored pikemen combine the attack and defense of the two units.

for using pikes effectively you have the keep them in guard mode and deploy them in a square shaped unit with about the same guys in lenght and widht.it make s it much harder to break then a thin triple file of pikes

Pikemen work fine in Vanilla for me, it takes some micro managing and knowledge of actual historical use but they can be used effectivly.

What we see are two ways to get pikemen to be effective in total war. One involves removing secondary weapon and reducing stats.

The other involves simply adjusting the unit spacing and they keep secondary weapons and vanilla stats.

One modification is obviously the superior one and the one to be used in third age and other mods.

Call of Warhammer has my spacing mod and the mod devs are pleased with it.
