Unionized acting is a joke, director has the right to pick and choose whoever he or she wants. This is an art, not a job. If someone off the street can act a little and looks the part and the director sees him or her as a great fit, then so be it. Taking away jobs from actors, what the hell is that? I firmly believe that everyone is playing a part every day. We all put on acts for our bosses, customers, children even. The hard part is finding the right fit. A union has no right to block.
My favorite movies of all time: 1.) Citizen Kane 2.) The Godfather 3.) Raging Bull 4.) Casablanca 5.) City Lights 6.) Schindler's List 7.) Psycho 8.) It's a Wonderful Life 9.) The Wizard of Oz 10.) Lawrence of Arabia
But this film did win the Best Actor (De Niro) and Best Editing (Schoonmaker), and it was well know at that time Marty Scorsese wasn't going to win an Oscar that year because of Hinkley (The dude who tried to kill Ronald Regan) claiming he was influence by Taxi Driver.
The Oscars have always been political - always have, always will. But in saying that some of the best films of all time have won little if not fuckall at the Oscars; Raging Bull, Green Mile, L.A. Confidential etc.
100% correct! Absolute travesty he had to wait all those years for the departed to win. Dont get me wrong it was a fine film but a far cry from Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. And lets be honest also and make no mistake.....it also boils down to that great line from Goodfellas....Predjudice against Italians.....cant you fucking beleive that? ...in this day and age
@jmpiork Of course it holds water! Im talking about Marty Scorsese. His dark New York heavily Italian themes drenched in realistic violence have always been shunned by the establishment come award season. Mainly is was a simply prejudice against Italians. Raging Bull was later voted the best picture of the Decade (released in 1980) for the 1980's yet didnt win best picture. Why do you think that? Believe me, Im in the business I know what Im talking about.
In an ideal world it should have...but the thing that really makes me angry is that Ordinary ppl won over this ...if ever there was a travesty commited at the academy awards it was this ..
cathy was amazing. The most underrated performance because she holds her own with De niro's brilliance and her performance was so natural and restrained it really did impress me.
Lol, Frank Vincent and Joe Pesci are always killing each other in different movies.

@Rvd420WHAT How does that hold water when Michael Chapman, Thelma Schoonmaker and Cathy Moriarty are not in the slightest bit Italian?

@mushroompeacepipe646 Yeah it's crazy. If you go back and read reviews from the time. It got pretty bad reviews when it came out. Unbelivable.
