You'd have expect to hear a new piece of music when Chuck displays the board. I find that somewhat hipocritical that they used the old music for that portion. Also, adding the bonus money to the jackpot was a ripoff.
Aside from changing how the bonus squares played out, the only other thing that annoys me about this version is how Chuck lets the players know that a letter's a stopper before it's done scanning.
Boy, the production values on this were cheap. The set is very sparse, and they ran out of money to produce new music and sound effects about 1:45 in, which is just as well, because the new music was terrible. Very odd combination of pieces from 1984 and 1993.
Yeah I agree with everyone else...I liked the 80s version better....I loved it at the beginning when the letters forming "scrabble" would appear and everyone would yell "SCRABBLE!!!!!!!!!!!" They still do it in this one...but it's just not as cool!
I heard that while this was on NBC, USA network was airing reruns of the previous version at the time. I guess it didn't really help the ratings on NBC.
This clip beings back memories. Our NBC affiliate in Detroit didn't even carry this Scrabble or Scattegories. It aired on a then low rated independent station. I remember watching this after school, and not being as impressed as the USA reruns of the 80s version.
when the show went to air, NBC hurried to get the show going that they didn't have the "cube" move back and forth and the doors open and close and the "stoppers" never lit up and the number that the contestants won the puzzle, 1,2,3, was added in during post production
I think they should've brought "Scrabble" back for another season in the fall of 1993 and make the show feel more like the 1984-1990 era by replacing the neon stopper lines with the original stop sign stoppers and having the board turn to the other side for the Sprint Round.
Awesome! An opening from the '93 version! You rule! A lot of people disliked the set on this version, but I thought it fit the '90s well! and I agree about the oney stakes on this version. In fact, Reg Grundy jumped the shark big time in the '90s.
The only thing that sucked about this version of "Scrabble" was the fact that the progressive jackpot (which started at $1,000) was now increased by blue ($500) and pink ($1,000) bonus squares in the main game.
I think it would have been a much better revival if they had left the pay-outs alone, or doubled them for this version.
I think that the revival should've had the progressive jackpot start at $10,000, then increase it by blue ($500) and pink ($1,000) bonus squares in the main game (the money is added whether they guess it immediately or not, and bonus money is still given to the players if they guessed immediately), and increase it by $2,000 each day until won.
I think this jackpot aspect would have been better if it started at $5,000 and added to that rather than $1,000.

Perhaps they had no intention of replacing it. Maybe they meant to keep it.

KHQ (Q6), the NBC affiliate here in Spokane, showed this.

I remember this version when I lived in Southern Ontario. The Buffalo NBC station never showed this but I remember seeing it on an Erie, PA station.
What was the deal with the countless number of close-up shots of Chuck?

The only disappointment of this version for me was they didn't have the original logo from the 80's.
samsticka 4 years ago 2
the prize budget was lower too the bonus started at just $1,000 that's ridiculous for 1993.
gameshowfreak2007 3 years ago
Oh, yeah. That was rather absurd.

You can pass a stopper and guess the word.
nicka727 4 years ago
Funny that Chuck would mention that on the last episode.
samsticka 4 years ago
They open up the board and the sound effect when they do it here? They didn't do that at first with this version.
samsticka 4 years ago 2
I meant they HAVE the sound effect when they open up the board. I accidentally left that word out.

This was the last episode of Scrabble ever produced, wasn't it?
Tubewings 4 years ago
So that's was how it went? Even if you didn't get the word, you still get the money for filling a bonus square?

Chuck still uses the word Stoppers to describe the red balls on Lingo

Yeah, I don't remember Channel 4 carrying this version.
Wish GSN would air Scrabble!

Let me guess, that low-rated independent station was WGPR-TV (now WWJ-TV), wasn't it?
Tubewings 4 years ago
Yes. I think the other low rated independent (WADL) aired a movie during that time period.

Yeah, but it's so cheap! I mean, $1,000 as a STARTING Jackpot? Sounds kinda Chintzy.

The only sad thing about it is, that it doesn't turn around like the old one.

At first, it didn't even move back and forth. It didn't even have those doors that open and close on it either.

and also if you listen really closely at the board moving forward, you can even hear a portion of the 1980s Scrabble theme playing as well.

I liked the 1980s version better. It was much cooler or cuter.

I think the only thing I don't like about the 1993 Scrabble is the updated theme music. Well, that and messing with the bonus squares too, I guess.

Also, the players win $2,000 if they win the Crossword game, and $3,000 more if they win the Sprint Round.
