Excellent Tribute! I can't express how lucky I feel to know that I saw him do this cover live ... just months before his untimely death. To quote Ben Folds - "the songs you wrote - got me through a lot - just wanna tell you that."
Really cool cover...Its kind of a shame people only know this song of Blue Oyster Cult because of the "More cowbell" skit which was hillarious but people dont realize Blue Oyster Cult were and are godfathers to early metal and punk bands and very under rated
it just hit me how horrible it is that he is dead. it makes this song almost unbearable. almost. but not quite. its just unexplainable, how amazing his music is. it feeds my soul
Yes! I saw him play it at Beacon Theatre way back when I was in high school (graduated in 2001). I was blown away. He was so serious the whole show... saw him twice... two of the best shows I have ever seen!
elliot smith is such a great influence, he brings me chills everytime i hear his music, i've always LOVED music but never had the urge to play, but after hearing elliot smith he actually made me want to play. i also tried introducing e smith to over 10 people and not one of em actually got in to it and liked him. i see so many people on YT who love him, are all my friends just jack asses or what?
LOVE YOU ELLIOTT SMITH HAPPY B-DAY
U WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN AND DEFINITELY NEVER BE REPLACED!!!
hey man now its my turn to follow you aroud youtube haha i know how you feel. i must have shown elliotts music to like 50 people. all of them react in the same muted unimpressed way. and my sister can't stand him. but it doesn't bother me one bit. the way i see it, they are just unlucky that elliotts beauty doesn't register with them. we are the fortunate ones.
yeah im glad there's people like us out there, who can truly see the beauty in elliott, which i dont find hard to do, but others do haha!!! anyhow, u seem like a cool dude, keep on rockin!!!
can you correct the spelling of elliott in the first part of your comment? and yes your friends suck and probably could never play or write music nearly as well as he could. so they have no room to talk. anyway... i will just post this up to be a know it all. his b-day is aug. 6, 1969. and he passed oct. 21, 2003. and yeah, there is a MUCH better version of this one.. i've heard blue oyster cult play this song live and well.. elliott rocked some socks off with the cover i'm talkin about.
I think elliot smith's version is the best because his voice is softer and makes the song have me emotion.also guitar sounds better.but you gotta love blue oyster cult too.personaly this is my favorate version.
Not that anybody cares, but I write goofy folk music, and in terms of songwriting and performing, this guy is my idol. I love this song, and that was amazing.
Elliott is the single reason I picked up guitar last December, and why I continue to play music today. The guy was just a brilliant songwriter, and he gives me something to aspire to be.
@gonzomaggot I went from playing power chord punk rock/grunge to finger picking a classical guitar because of Elliott. I will always be grateful for knowing and enjoying his music too.
Since today is the 21st, I figured I'd say something to Elliott:
Elliott, you changed my life. Your music continues to shape me, now 5 years after your death. I just wish I could have known you... you were truly amazing.
I was surprised to see that no one had uploaded a version of this to YouTube. I don't think there's any video recordings of shows in which he played this, or I would have put one up. But, yeah. Elliott did a really good cover, imo.
I love this cover because I'm a ROCKER and this kicks major ASS

I don't get your cowbell references (Maybe because I'm wearing solid-gold diapers...). Nice cover, Elliott!

He looks so happy in this pic. :D

@TheBradenL Eh, just because he struggled with depression doesn't mean he was incapable of being happy or smiling, apparently he did it a lot.
Depression is a part of everyones' lives whether they like it or not.

cowbell or not, death travels with a whole box of percussion instruments.

i wonder if that's him playing the solo ... ?
kieran514 9 months ago
he nails the solo -- although he would, elliott was a supreme guitarist
kieran514 9 months ago 2
All you people saying more cowbell are seeming to overlook the whole flawless middle section of the song

Loved it Elliott but... we need more cowbell.....

This cover was clearly not thrown together on the spot. They put some serious effort into this one, because it sounds dead on.

You can sometimes get more of an insight in to an artist's mind by their covers than their originals.

This is just a great song no matter who performs it. I refuse to let classic rock radio ruin it by over playing it.

A genius at times, but a freaking wreck the times I was around him. Some of the guys he had in his touring band could go all night wink wink
