Thank you for sharing this video. It's a good way to help educate people that black dogs are beautiful both inside and out. They reminded me of my own babies.
We saw 2 black mutts on the side of the road not even 4 mo. old yet. Covered in fleas and ticks and skinny. They are my precious babies and I would let nothing touch them.. :) (The girl looks identical to the dog at 0:23)
hey, black dogs need creative marketing! for me, black coats = my preference...stylish choice. Ahh, I've got to do something! create PSA's and print ad's for them. It's so easy to make something like a color become appealing. They can be tough to photograph but find a pro' and wow, they can look sleek. Black makes you look thinner, more sophisticated, ha ha! If you wear black? You don't have to worry about obvious fur on your clothes.
I have a black lab.pitt mix that i'm fostering right now. He has been in foster care with us since november. That's longer than any dog has ever been in foster care with our rescue. He is such a sweet boy. Loves kids, very calm, but he also loves to play outside, but because he is a big black dog, nobody seems to want him. I wish someone would give him his forever home.
why people don't like black dogs don't they know that black dogs are very sweet and very loyal we have 3 black dogs and they are very loyal and sweet we love them and they love us too our very fist dog is a black dog named sunburst 4 yrs. and the second one is angelina 2 yrs. and the last one is flonne 1 yr old
I currently foster a Big Beautiful Black Lab with a rescue group in my home state. This poor guy has been looking for his forever home since August of 2010. He's absolutely the sweetest guy ever, and 100 pounds of pure love. It still confuses me as to why so many black dogs are PTS in shelters, discarded in the countryside, or simply SHOT by farmers and other homeowners because they "look mean"... Nothing could be farther from the truth!
What a shame. i have a 6 month old dobermann/pitbull mix and he's black with a white streak down his neck and belly. most people think he is a black lab mix, but he has no lab in him. when we tell people what type of dog he is some people become fearful right away. that's too bad cause he is really good with our children. we have a 3 year old and a 7 month old baby and our dog just loves them and really likes all kids actually. he's a great dog and his coat is really shiny in the sun.
My first dog that I adopted was a rescue dog as well as many others. And, he was black. Black dogs are the BEST dogs! I've had Labs, Rotts, Pitts, JRT's (ya they aren't black, but mine is black and white). I love black cats too... Black dogs are portrayed and seen as "mean" for some reason. I'm not sure that's it's all about superstition. Whatever it is..... it's absolutely ridiculous!
people are blind in ignorance cruel, obtuse without common sense a book by its cover is not read this shallow focus has left many dead open your eyes look inside beauty lives as man still lies please learn deep before more angels are put to sleep karen lyons kalmenson
I have rescued Bouviers for the Nat'l Bouvier Rescue org. The ones I have rescued in the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area all have been black. They are beautiful, loyal, intelligent, and expensive (if purchased from a breeder.) They often look scraggly in the shelter, because they have not been groomed and have probably on the streets for a while. One friend adopted a Black Russian Terrier from the same shelter she had adopted a black Bouvier. Big black dogs are often diamonds in the rough.

I hope more shelters will place attractive cards with catchy phrases to bring attention to these dogs. If more would do that, it would catch the public's eye and make them think when they're there viewing the dogs. Use the imagination! I have one black dog that has a little white on him but it wouldn't matter to me if he didn't. My next one will be black and I'll ask which one is the very least adoptable too, that'll be the one!
On October 2009 we adopted our black lab mix from a rescue group; he, along with his brothers and sister were all due to be euthanized at a Georgia kill shelter. I love my big black dog...of all the dogs there that day (the day we went in "just to look") it was him that grabbed my attention and stole my heart - my big black dog with his big beautiful gentle brown eyes. He was the last of the liter to be adopted - b/c they saved the best for last. :-) I love you Mr. Otis!
Oh, this is hurting my my mind to see this...it is so sad what happens to these animals...all looking for love, and willing to give all the love they have and more..
As a former animal shelter adoption counselor and project manager, I was actually told by a prospective adopter that, after initially applying to adopt a black dog at the shelter, she changed her mind "because, well, he's *black*." Words can't adequately convey my profound disgust.
I am 14 and have been pet sitting this summer. Let me just say that so far the best dog I have received was a black labrador. He is the biggest sweet heart ever! I can't imagine him being passed up for a lighter colored dog! It's horrible! i had this lab for a week at my home and he was the most obeying dog ever. He knew shake, sit, lay down, kennel, easy, go, and stay! I love him so much! He's a big sweet heart! People need to adopt these black dogs. You can't judge a book by its cover!! <3
@Issa2848 3 months ago I had my Black lab/Rottie put to sleep...he was such a sweet heart..so good around kids...and when he looked at you he would tilt his head and just look into your soul..he was 15 and could not walk anymore..at the vets office i just put my face to his and cried and screamed for about 15 min....so hard to say goodbye..so many memorys...I cant watch my older videos that have him in them...I just cant!..I have my 10 year old black lab and she is also a sweet loving dog..
@DramaDon83 I'm sorry for your loss...i understand how hard it must be to lose someone so special that you'd had for so long....people need to stop choosing dogs on how cute they look, black dogs are equally cute if not cuter than those lighter color dogs! : (
Great video! I had no idea, and I have to admit, I have seen some black dogs up for adoption and thought "oh, they are too boring" however, that being said, we adopted our big, loveable, black great dane fur baby, Brutus, and he is the best dog I've ever had. He was just a year old when we got him, and already fully trained...potty trained, and knew sit, down, stay, shake, high five, great with kids, and can catch! :) Adopt a BBD! You won't regret it!

I was diagnosed at age 26 with an 8 cm breast cancer tumor in my left breast. I had no family history of cancer & had been told I was "too young" for breast cancer and not given a mammogram for several months due to this. I rescue animals & that is what I was busy doing when I got hit with this diagnosis. The month before I was diagnosed I adopted Shy-Shy, a black/brown mutt who was on death row at a gassing shelter in Georgia. She was not even on the list to be saved, due to her color.
@octoberfire13 Shy-Shy really has helped me heal emotionally so much. She is the most intuitive, sweet, smart dog I have ever had. I also have a rescued male pitbull named Ollie, he is 8 years old. He actually sensed my cancer before I even knew as he started having to sleep with his head across my left breast at night. Dogs are so much more amazing than most people even realize. Dog is GOD spelled backwards for a reason!
My dog, Tyr, is black his mommy was a shepard and his daddy was a rambling lab. He is 12 years old this year and weighs about 100lbs but he is very soft-hearted, a gentle spirit but is not the sharpest claw on the paw. He was always to afraid to play with my cat but was willing to kiss him if I said "kiss the kitty." The kitty always looked like a drive by slobbering afterwards lol but he never minded the dog.
I adopted an eight year old male, black and big, and he is such a sweet loving dog. Nobody wanted him and he waited more than 5 years in a shelter. Now he is mine and I love to spoil him. Black is beautiful!!
i wish so much that i had a dog. unfortunately since my dad is allergic, we cant have any other pets besides fish or hamsters. when i get my own house, i plan to adopt a dog. big black dogs are what i would want most, i cant understand why anyone wouldnt want them as a friend! a pet shouldnt be picked because of their colour, but seeing this video makes you really think. why do we care so much about the way our friends, family and pets look?
Its just numbers, too many out there, like the brown horse. Black, white, gold, paints all find homes faster than the brown horse. There are so many black dogs out there, like us, our last 2 dogs were black from rescues. We wanted to add some color with our new one but got another big black dog because there are so many in need
Brings back memories of one black foster puppy I had for 10 months. She was 6wks old when I took her in and took 10 months (a only 35lbs) to adopt her but it was worth every minute, hour, day, week and month. She was and is a great dog and is in a wonderful loving home. She had 7 siblings and everyone was black but two sisters. Two of the sisters took 3 yrs to find a home but they did and they still live together. This is one more plight to add to the tragedy of homeless pets in our country.
We went to some rescues and pounds looking for a small friend for our 14 pound poodle. We asked for another small poodle, color did not matter. Then we saw the lists, so many large large black dogs. A lady we met outside the rescue had a stray black puppy, 40 pounds at 4 months old that no one would take. He is so calm and perfect with our home that this is now his home too. A large dog is harder to have understandably. No one should judge on the color. A good personality is all that matters
ALL of my dogs are black dogs! They are wonderful and all rescued from shelters or found by me. Thank you for posting this video. Most people have NO IDEA that black dogs die at a higher rate than lighter colored dogs.
Even BLACK dogs are discriminated against? That's a lil weird. I guess it's because according to superstition, any black animal seems to be evil. Meh.
I love black dogs, they're so pretty. Like the silky appearance of a black lab.
Oh my god I could not imagine without Duke!! He isn't even mine and he is one of my greatest loves! He looks just like the boxer at 0:28 and I had no idea people could be racist to dogs too! We need a doggie Dr. King and fast!!!! Even if it takes painting them all brown and red!
We have a beautiful, big black lab who is the best dog! She's so patient, loving, and just a big 88 lb. baby!! She's a wonderful family pet!! We couldn't imagine our lives without her!!
i love my mostly black dog rescues- one is deaf and the other is heartworm postive - i get stopped by a lot people who always says my dogs are beautiful! i always get asked what kind they are and so on! please, please, please adopt from rescues- the dogs know that you helped them and are furever greatful!- dogs have feelings AND ARE NOT DISPOSABLE! god bless
I can't imagine NOT having my BBD. He was a goofy big black teenager when I got him and now he's a gorgeous big black 7 year old. I am always drawn to BBD and always will be.
I was a little kid. Our landlord had a big black lab named Joe. It was a little gruff but probably a pretty good dog. That dog scared the Hell out me. I called it "ash" because it was so black, & as if it that would hurt its feelings. very interesting stat on black dogs. interesting commentary/ reflection of human perceptions.
I have a big, black, beautiful dog named Jake. He is a pit bull/lab mix and is WONDERFUL! He is so affectionate, smart and good. I will always adopt black dogs now that I know this. Please, adopt a shelter dog- no pet stores or breeders!!! Adopt a black dog!!
I had an all-black 80lb lab mix (probably part pit, we don't really know) who was also wonderful, just like yours. We miss him dearly. (He passed away recently after sudden, incurable illness.)
i'm and italian animal rights activist, i done years of shelter voluntary work and every volunteer here can confirm the big black dog syndrome :( luckily, italians laws prohibit euthanasia of healty dogs (there are only no-kill shelters here... in theory), but black dogs are really difficult to place (more than light-coloured dogs) and remains in shelters for years... or for life... :( i cannot and can never understand: i love black dogs, they're adorable! *_*
I adopted Rowan a BBP(big black puppy) at 4 months from my high kill local shelter. Now an adult she is beautiful smart kind and already has 2 obedience titles. She is the best dog i've ever owned and the ACO told me that if i hadn't adopted her she most certainly would have been killed since BBDs are not often adopted. Please don't be color blind, you won't be sorry. love Robin and Rowan
I have 2 medium size black dogs (40 and 55 lbs). I wouldn't give them up for anything. My first is a beautifully marked cattledog mix, yet she had to wait 6 months for me to find her. Given what I see here, she was still very lucky!
Once I found out that BBDs had the hardest time getting adopted, I decided that the dog we adopted would be one. In May, we adopted a lovely solid black lab/border collie mix who was just one day away from being euthanized. She's the most amazing and wonderful dog and we're so thankful to have her in our lives.
I have a darling black lab that I adopted because I know that people generally don't adopt big black dogs because of BBD syndrome. Please don't discriminate because of fur color or size. She is the sweetest.
Proud owner of Lucy my black dog!

I think black is a beautiful color on animals. You can see their eyes quite clearly, and it looks great when its clean.
It's a shame how people can be so biased. A black dog is intimidating?

Just think if you were a black pit bull. That makes the odds even worse.
I don't get it. All my dogs growing up were black, Hell most of my cats were too.
I own 2 pit bulls now....I guess I just have a soft spot for the outcasts.
