You should check out in-depth analyses of 2001 and other Kubrick films so that you realize just how much you're missing. Not to be a dick but just because you don't understand something doesn't mean the movie sucks, you just don't seem to be able to think about movies beyond their story plot. 2001 is very complex and has many different narratives and themes throughout the film. You should research and think about this kind of stuff more before making a video that you admit is bound to draw hate.
@Thirdalproductions You just don't understand how to read into an art form properly. You proved it by saying that a movie is simply made to entertain.
you are a child completely disrespecting a true genius, you clearly are not an intellectual and should stick to watching ben ten before you try understanding a complex work of art. Movies are not meant to just "entertain" and show you "cool stuff" its about portraying a message and taking audiences through a journey...
How about you watch movies like Killer's Kiss, or The Killing, or Paths of Glory, or A Clockwork Orange, or Full Metal Jacket, or Dr. Strangelove. Those are the real genius of Kubrick movies.
LOL! The funny thing is you could literally insert any ground breaking movie piece in place of 2001 in this video, and it makes just as much sense... very little sense.
The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut, A Clockwork Orange were amazing movies son. I give you the reason in many points as well. Kubrick and many other directors are sacred cow's but you have to understand one thing ... those were other times. The mood on movies nowadays is different.
You said that you don't get 2001: space odyssey and then afterwards say that there for it's stupid. Maybe you are the one with bad sensors? You make it pretty clear that you don't understand and how you got bored.
Movies now need to spoon-feed and jump-cut everything to it appeal to more people like you at the same time one type of quality is gone.
It's okay to be stupid and the first step to be more self-aware admitting it to yourself just don't call something stupid that you can't get.
Finally! I found an intellectual comment amoung these comments! Seriously I thought I was the only one who realized that... you know? The thing that was actually wrong with this video! Even then he did say he was open for debate about this and was willing to watch more Kubrick movies for more opinion on him.
You make me want to euthanize everyone under the age of 17 for being an ignorant uncultured little shit with no knowledge of the process of filmmaking and film theory. Go fuck yourself along with the other drooling retards that craze over 3D and CGI with no subtlety or critical thinking. You bastard.
Kinda like you asshat! The guy even politely asks others opinions on Kubrick and this movie and you come around just writing propably the most poor insult I've heard in a while.
I watched this movie for a film theory and criticism class, and after discussing this with other people passionate about film and cinema theory, I STILL CAN'T STAND THIS MOVIE!! I would argue that it sucks for the same reasons but in different words.
YO BRO REAL BIG ORDER HERE... GOT A REAL BIG ORDER...... FIRST QUESTION... CAN U DO DA SKIT?.... OK SORRY FOLKS BIG ORDER... SECOND QUESTION!!!!! IS HE SHIT COMPARED TO UR VIDS?
@blackbranduh But I like both! What's wrong with Fight Club? Sure there's a lot of violence, but that's the point. It still has very intelligent subtext and themes, and superb cinematography. And no, I'm not comparing it to 2001, that would just make the internet tear me a new one! (And personally, I KNOW it's not on the same level.)
@blackbranduh I understand where you're coming from completely. But I definitely think that there are some complex, educated themes and underlying messages in the movie. For sure, though, there are many parts that cater to the uneducated 15-year-old kids needs.
so his fluid cinematic simplicity is nothing to do with the work of his idol, Max Ophüls? Though I appreciate your bravery for displaying your opinion, and you are completely entitled to, your argument is flawed. You might not like Kubrick, but ironically he evoked a powerful reaction from you - he'd love that.
@TheClassifiedID maybe its a girl idk, anyway dont be a piece of shit that loves to write in CAPS LOK, plus she or he just said that she or he doesnt like kubrick, grow up shithead
KID YOU KNOW FUCK ALL ABOUT STANLEY KUBRICK HIS MOVIES ARE GREAT AND WITH THAT FAGGOT HAIR STYLE OF YOURS HOW THE FUCK COULD YOU JUDGE ANYONE OR ANYTHING BY THE SOUND OF YOUR VOICE YOU AINT EVEN HIT PUBERTY YET
He did have the other argument that the movie was really long just because they made some scenes drag out really long and thats my problem with the movie as well.
You don't have to like Stanley Kubrick kid. I only rate a few of his films. Kubrick's biggest problem is he was an egomaniac and arrogant. I enjoyed 2001, Dr Strangelove, Full Metal and Clockwork but Kubrick is a cliche of a director as in an auteur who shouts about 'the Vision' of a film. He was more than lucky just to be surrounded by the talent he was.
12 Year old kid thinks his idea of movie film making comes in the form of michael bay and spiderman movies. I don't expect him to know what makes Kubrick a legend... another example of kids thinking they know what the world is about. lol
@blissfullydead89 Doesn't mean he won't see the next sleepfest that comes from Bay. He said he wants to be entertained, Kubrick doesn't make films to entertain.
The thing is, I don't even care that you don't like Kubrick or 2001. It's just that you're a child and even though you think you know a lot right now, you really don't. In about ten years, you won't like any of the same films you like now and you'll honestly be a completely different person. Just think of this as a "babby's first kubrick" review.
Well, I'll give you an "A" for having the balls to post a video voicing your critical view of Stanley Kubrick while being alive the entire time I spent in the Army.
"I'm sorry, but I mean like, it didn't even make any sense, I just don't understand..."
Your review is incredibly invaluable, and after panning though all of your "doesn't make any sense" excuses, you have ABSOLUTELY no useful content that supports your "review". Maybe after you let your brain develop for about six years, you'll be able to comprehend the artistic value of Sanley Kubrick's work.
i agree with what everyone here is saying. i know its harsh, but you are too young. especially in the time that 2001 was made, which was the 60s, it was an AMAZING, thought provoking, and clever movie. i dont even like to watch the movie a lot and i recognize its brilliance. there are so many deep underlying themes that it astounds me. the same goes for his other movies like A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, and The Shining. they all have a message to them that require SEVERAL watchings toget
I think a better way to put it is movies are made to tell stories. I know it was boring to some, but it got the story told, and it's interesting to me. I also love the Transformers movies. It depends on whether I want an intriguing story or mind-blowing action, or pointless horror or sad horror.
I had no patience for 2001 when I was a kid too. When you get to college you'll probably understand it. Your brain won't be totally developed until you're in your twenties.
At your age I probably wouldn't have cared for 2001 either.
When I was your age I probably would have just interpreted the film as a boring sequence of long and dull scenes with no purpose or meaning. Now at age 23? I see a brilliant allegorical take on the journey of human evolution, the dangers of our own creations and of our own perpetual infancy when confronted with the grand face of the universe.
Give yourself 10 years or so and give Kubrick another shot. See whutcha think then =)
that movie is art, not all art is pleasing to look at, i think 2001 space odyssey shows us that space is a unknown territory, its a message that he created with the movie, and if its annoying to you and pisses you off then he made his art successful, art is made to make the disturbed feel comfortable and the comfortable feel disturbed.
not only am i saying hes responcible for anything decent in this millenium i am also saying he pushed and continued to push the bounderies of cinema forward. your age will not allow you to accept or understand this and to give that blind oppinion in its self is simply something that a complete tool would do.
allthough it does have somewhat something to do with oppinion... kubrick mostly has something to do with the intelectual capacity of his viewers... due to your age and lack of lived life.... its predictable for you to come up with an unknowingness for his work and a dislike, as all movies you watch now, where anything decent happens in them, probably has taken, or emulated something that kubrick invented or devised...
@Thirdalproductions Are you serious? If you are, come back when you can spell Stanley Kubrick (not Stanley Kybrick) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (not 2001:A SPace Odysee).
2001 is a great movie becuase of the artistic quality to the film, Kubrick wanted to make a movie like no other, and he did. The "10 minute" shots are for atmosphere, to bring you into the enviorment, and overall its a movie that leaves more questions than answers, thats why its one of the best movies ever made.
Movies are art, and as such they don't have to entertain, nor do they have to make sense. There are ways to criticise and de-construct intelligently without sounding like whiny dick. Sorry you didn't enjoy the movie.
Actually, everything about the movie makes sense. You just have to read into the metaphors and abstract of it all. If you just look for this, you'll realize that there is nothing lazy at all. Anyway, stick to your opinion and don't let others opinions get to you. Maybe you'll like the movie some day, maybe not. There's no movie that absolutely everyone enjoys, so don't get angry about people not accepting you being one of those. Just don't judge all Kubrick's films from seeing one of them.
lol I have no real opinion on Kubrick. I will go as far to say that you are a total faggot. The way you go about forming you sentences, the way you look, and they assumptions you make. Pretty fucking queer man.
You are a fucking Justin Bieber fan with a wierd haircut. Your opinion doesn't matter, because retard's opinion are worthless. You can't tell us you hate him just because you are too stupid to understand his movies. That's just like : Dubai sucks because i can't afford to go there.
I can understand why someone wouldn't like it, and I would agree that it isn't a movie that you can sit down and watch any time. However, movies are not just about entertainment, it's about art. The movie is supposed to make you think, and I do think everyone should watch it at least once.
Kubrick is a little bit overrated by the press and cinema critics, but 2001: Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and The Shining are brilliant pieces of film. You may not like too much action, but you don't seem to be the kind of person that likes slow paced movies which most of Kubrick's movies were.
So 2001 was way too long and boring, but taking 8 whole minutes just to say you thought so while sitting in your chair repeating yourself? THATS ENTERTAINING
woah, a recording of The Beatles performing at the Harrow Arts Centre in March this year despite the fact that John and George are dead and that the concert hasn't happened? I must be in the fucking Matrix...
Don't worry about the backlash for opening your mouth about the work of someone who is "so amazing that he's off limits to criticism."
You make some legitimate complaints about 2001, but you need to see the rest of his work. At the very least, Clockwork and Dr Strangelove. Don't make up your mind on something like that until all the facts are in.
Legitimate complaints like, "It doesn't make sense", and, "It sucks", and, "It's too long". Then at the end he thinks the monkeys (primality) finding the robot (technology) cutting to the spaceship (progress) makes no sense, he doesn't even understand basic symbolism like that, let alone the hundreds of other undertones within that section alone. It's not that the movie sucks, and I hate to be one of those "2 deep 4 u" guys, but, he didn't understand it, at all.
@BloodyFandango I think not understanding something is a legitimate complaint... like the extra long shot of the spaceship taking off. If it doesn't do anything for him, you can't fault the critic.
It's worth noting, I don't even agree with him that the movie sucks, but I can't argue the fact that he wasn't entertained by it.
And I applaud anyone who is willing to criticize the cemented opinion of the film establishment. Don't think it's good just because everyone else does.
Stanley Kubrick response to this video: I am deeply sorry for making a movie that requires the ability to think and not making a movie that takes you by the hand and tell you what the meaning is. Thankfully i am dead, so i will not make this mistake again. I hope your brain did not melt with all the thinking.
You don't have a single valid complaint. I know a lot of people say that others don't "get it" when they're defending something they like, but you DON'T get 2001: A Space Odyssey. You don't even know how to SPELL it.
Yeah but weren't you imagining yourself on that spaceship while it was landing? Maybe you could have thought at that moment how cool it would be if this was real. Some people might think about the science involved, but all these things require thinking and imagination. Something you obviously don't have.
There are definitely valid criticisms of Kubrick; his tendency to be too Freudian, his often unnecessarily glacial pacing skills, an over-reliance on symmetry & classical form. But that was just his style. Kubrick was a genius & one of the greatest director of all time. But he was an intellectual. If you have no tolerance/appreciation for intellectual analysis then you probably won't like his movies. The bottom line is, everything in his movies actually means something unpretentiously, it's art.
Can't tell if Trolling or just a dumbass... You hate Kubrick? You are what 12? What do you know about films at all? Wow... you are basing your opinion of a director on one of his films? WTF? Watch Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, Spartacus. I understand not liking a film, i don't like some artsy films as well. . I would have been fine with this vid if ypu had just said 2001: A Space Odyssey sucks, but you are saying a director sucks for one movie.
I'm not a Kubrick fan per se, but I do think you are far to immature to even come close to comprehending any of Kubrick's films. Hopefully in 10 years you'll be laughing at yourself like everyone else is here.
You're still a kid man. Thinking and viewing abstract thoughts, conveyed through art and films, can be interesting territory. It doesn't always make apparent and immediate sense. Kubrick liked masking his films with some deep philosophical points. Watch it again in 10 years and you'll see it in a different light.
That being said, you are entitled to your own opinion. There is not one single thing in existence that people can agree on. So be proud of your well articulated statement and opinion.
It's pretty obvious that you're too young and too dumb to understand how movies work, you want action, comedy and CGI. You didn't even understand the fucking story/plot, how the fuck can you enjoy a movie without understanding that?
You're a little piece of shit and I want to kill you. Fuck you.
10 minutes of spaceship landing? Yes, beethoven was stupid, his 9th symphony was a song that lasted an hour. 2001 is full of philosophical symbolism, talking about modernism, its not "entertainment"
People think that all movies, like someone mentioned here, must be super epic and have Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, or James Cameron feel to them, so when a movie alludes to philosophy and modernism
He's either really dumb or just trying to get as many "dislikes" as YouTube will allow. In that case, pretty smart. ;)

allthough it does have somewhat something to do with oppinion... kubrick mostly has something to do with the intelectual capacity of his viewers... due to your age and lack of lived life.... its predictable for you to come up with an unknowingness for his work and a dislike, as all movies you watch now, where anything decent happens in them, probably has taken, or emulated something that kubrick invented or devised...

Just don't judge all Kubrick's films from seeing one of them.

ghostramos 3 days ago
I can understand why someone wouldn't like it, and I would agree that it isn't a movie that you can sit down and watch any time. However, movies are not just about entertainment, it's about art. The movie is supposed to make you think, and I do think everyone should watch it at least once.

Kubrick is a little bit overrated by the press and cinema critics, but 2001: Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and The Shining are brilliant pieces of film. You may not like too much action, but you don't seem to be the kind of person that likes slow paced movies which most of Kubrick's movies were.
Stuntman175 3 days ago
You just don't get it. You should rant on movies that you understand, like Cars or Toy Story.

ProfSutherland 3 days ago
@ProfSutherland
BloodyFandango 3 days ago
@BloodyFandango I think not understanding something is a legitimate complaint... like the extra long shot of the spaceship taking off. If it doesn't do anything for him, you can't fault the critic.
It's worth noting, I don't even agree with him that the movie sucks, but I can't argue the fact that he wasn't entertained by it.
And I applaud anyone who is willing to criticize the cemented opinion of the film establishment. Don't think it's good just because everyone else does.
ProfSutherland 1 day ago
Stanley Kubrick response to this video: I am deeply sorry for making a movie that requires the ability to think and not making a movie that takes you by the hand and tell you what the meaning is. Thankfully i am dead, so i will not make this mistake again. I hope your brain did not melt with all the thinking.
hitch176 3 days ago
You don't have a single valid complaint. I know a lot of people say that others don't "get it" when they're defending something they like, but you DON'T get 2001: A Space Odyssey. You don't even know how to SPELL it.

Yeah but weren't you imagining yourself on that spaceship while it was landing? Maybe you could have thought at that moment how cool it would be if this was real. Some people might think about the science involved, but all these things require thinking and imagination. Something you obviously don't have.
RetroVGamer 3 days ago
Yeah once you said "Like" a dozen times. It's hard to take your opinions seriously.
RetroVGamer 3 days ago
There are definitely valid criticisms of Kubrick; his tendency to be too Freudian, his often unnecessarily glacial pacing skills, an over-reliance on symmetry & classical form. But that was just his style. Kubrick was a genius & one of the greatest director of all time. But he was an intellectual. If you have no tolerance/appreciation for intellectual analysis then you probably won't like his movies. The bottom line is, everything in his movies actually means something unpretentiously, it's art.
WanderLink 3 days ago
is there a way to dislike a video double, triple or more?
korhan 3 days ago

Hopefully in 10 years you'll be laughing at yourself like everyone else is here.
wasabi1787 3 days ago
You're still a kid man. Thinking and viewing abstract thoughts, conveyed through art and films, can be interesting territory. It doesn't always make apparent and immediate sense. Kubrick liked masking his films with some deep philosophical points. Watch it again in 10 years and you'll see it in a different light.
That being said, you are entitled to your own opinion. There is not one single thing in existence that people can agree on. So be proud of your well articulated statement and opinion.

10 minutes of spaceship landing? Yes, beethoven was stupid, his 9th symphony was a song that lasted an hour. 2001 is full of philosophical symbolism, talking about modernism, its not "entertainment"
omgtkseth 3 days ago
People think that all movies, like someone mentioned here, must be super epic and have Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, or James Cameron feel to them, so when a movie alludes to philosophy and modernism
